A specialized parasite of bats

Ixodes vespertilionis is a hard tick that primarily parasitizes bats. It is commonly known in English as the Long-legged bat tick because of its characteristically long and slender legs.

It belongs to the family Ixodidae, whose members possess a hard dorsal shield. Unlike many other ticks that wait for passing hosts on vegetation, this species is closely adapted to life inside caves and other underground places used by roosting bats.

Occurrence in Cyprus

Ixodes vespertilionis has been recorded in Cyprus, where the presence of suitable hosts and numerous natural caves, galleries, rock crevices and abandoned underground structures provides favourable conditions for its survival.

It is difficult to locate because it is associated with bat roosts, many of which are inaccessible and must not be disturbed. Its true distribution and abundance in Cyprus may therefore be greater than the available records indicate.

The scientific study of Cyprus ticks is important both for documenting biodiversity and for understanding the relationships between parasites, wildlife and the island’s distinctive ecosystems.

Description

Like all arachnids, adult Ixodes vespertilionis have four pairs of legs. The body is flattened when unfed but expands considerably after a blood meal.

Its legs are unusually long and slender in relation to its body. This morphological feature is regarded as an adaptation facilitating movement through bat fur and across the irregular surfaces of underground roosts.

Body coloration ranges from yellowish or light brown to darker brown. Females are larger than males and can become greatly enlarged after feeding. Larvae have three pairs of legs, whereas nymphs and adults have four.

Accurate identification requires examination of morphological characters under a stereomicroscope or microscope. This is particularly important because other related tick species may occur in bat roosts.

Hosts

Its principal hosts are bats, particularly species belonging to the families Rhinolophidae and Vespertilionidae. It has been recorded from numerous bat species and is regarded as one of the least host-specific bat ticks in the Western Palearctic.

It frequently parasitizes horseshoe bats of the genus Rhinolophus, but it has also been recorded from species belonging to Myotis, Pipistrellus and other bat genera.

Its relationship with its hosts is permanently linked to their roosts. The ticks feed on blood for a limited period and then detach, remaining inside the cave until another blood meal is required.

Habitat and microhabitat

Ixodes vespertilionis occurs mainly in caves, mines, underground galleries, rock fissures, old tunnels and other dark places used by bats.

Unfed individuals may hide in cracks, on the walls or ceilings of roosts and close to the places where bats congregate. Adult females are more frequently found attached to hosts, whereas males may be encountered on cave walls.

The relatively stable microclimate of underground sites, with limited temperature fluctuations and elevated humidity, allows the ticks to remain away from a host for extended periods.

Life cycle

Its life cycle consists of four principal stages: egg, larva, nymph and adult. After hatching, the six-legged larva finds a bat, takes a blood meal and subsequently detaches.

It then moults into an eight-legged nymph. The nymph requires another blood meal before developing into an adult. The adult female attaches to a bat, consumes a large quantity of blood and, after detaching, lays her eggs within the roost.

Completion of the life cycle depends on the presence of hosts and on suitable temperature and humidity within the shelter. Because bats may change roosts or be seasonally absent, the tick must be capable of surviving for long periods without feeding.

Seasonality

Its activity is influenced by the annual cycle of its bat hosts. Hibernation, the formation of maternity colonies and the concentration of large numbers of bats in particular roosts create different opportunities for parasitism.

Larvae, nymphs and adults may display different seasonal patterns. Their activity is also affected by the host species and the particular environmental conditions within each cave.

Geographical distribution

Ixodes vespertilionis is widely distributed throughout the Western Palearctic. It has been recorded from Britain and western Europe eastwards through eastern Europe to the Ural region, as well as around the Mediterranean, in North Africa and in the Middle East.

Older publications attributed an even wider Asian distribution to the species. Modern morphological and genetic research has demonstrated, however, that some Asian populations previously identified as I. vespertilionis belong to distinct, recently separated species. Older records must therefore be interpreted carefully.

Ecological role

Parasites form a natural component of ecosystems and participate in complex evolutionary relationships with their hosts. The presence of Ixodes vespertilionis does not necessarily indicate that a bat is diseased.

Healthy bats can normally tolerate small numbers of ticks. Heavy infestations, however, may cause irritation, localized skin damage, blood loss and weakness, particularly in young or already stressed animals.

Microorganisms and medical importance

Various microorganisms have been detected during studies of ticks associated with bats. However, detecting a microorganism’s genetic material in a tick does not by itself demonstrate that the tick is a competent vector or that it can transmit that microorganism to humans.

Ixodes vespertilionis is closely associated with bats and their underground roosts and is not regarded as a usual parasite of humans or domestic animals. Its possible epidemiological importance remains a subject of scientific investigation.

It should not be confused with the more widespread Ixodes ricinus, which parasitizes numerous mammals and birds and is an important vector of pathogens in Europe.

Bat conservation and safe research

All bat species occurring in Cyprus are protected. Entering their roosts, particularly during hibernation or the breeding season, can cause serious disturbance and should be avoided without the necessary permits and appropriate scientific supervision.

Ticks should not be touched or removed from wild bats. Capturing and examining bats must be undertaken only by trained and licensed researchers using suitable protective equipment and following established animal-welfare and biosafety protocols.

Conservation status

Ixodes vespertilionis has not been assessed separately for the IUCN Red List. Its continued survival depends on healthy bat populations and the preservation of suitable underground roosts.

The destruction or sealing of caves, uncontrolled human access, artificial lighting and disturbance of bat colonies may affect the entire specialized roost fauna, including bat ectoparasites.
