Pulchellodromus pulchellus (Lucas, 1846)
Philodromus pulchellus Lucas, 1846
Είναι επικίνδυνο για τον άνθρωπο;

Beautiful running crab spider – Pulchellodromus pulchellus (Lucas, 1846) – Cyprus
Text by George Konstantinou
A small running spider of Cyprus
Pulchellodromus pulchellus (Lucas, 1846) is a small predatory spider belonging to the family Philodromidae. Members of this family are known as running crab spiders because of their rapid movement and laterally directed legs.
It does not build a web to trap prey. Instead, it moves rapidly over vegetation, branches, tree trunks or the ground and captures small arthropods through sudden attacks.
Verification of the scientific name
The accepted scientific name is:
Pulchellodromus pulchellus (Lucas, 1846)
The species was originally described by the French naturalist Hippolyte Lucas in 1846 as:
Philodromus pulchellus Lucas, 1846
In 2012, Jörg Wunderlich separated the genus Pulchellodromus from the larger genus Philodromus. Because the species was transferred to a different genus, Lucas’s name and the year are placed within parentheses.
Pulchellodromus pulchellus is the type species of the genus Pulchellodromus.
Etymology
The name Pulchellodromus is derived from Latin and Greek roots:
- pulchellus means beautiful or graceful;
- dromos means road or running.
The name can be interpreted as “beautiful runner”. The specific epithet pulchellus also refers to the spider’s elegant appearance and body pattern.
The English common name Beautiful running crab spider reflects the same meaning.
Morphology
Pulchellodromus pulchellus has a flattened, relatively slender body. Its legs are long, directed sideways and adapted for rapid movement over flat or irregular surfaces.
Its variable coloration may include:
- pale brown;
- grey;
- yellowish tones;
- whitish areas;
- darker brown lines or patches.
This variation provides camouflage on dry leaves, branches, bark and stones.
The cephalothorax is relatively broad and low. The abdomen is elongated or slightly oval and bears patterns that vary between individuals.
Legs and movement
The first two pairs of legs are well developed but are not as greatly enlarged as those of true crab spiders in the family Thomisidae.
The spider can move:
- forwards;
- backwards;
- sideways;
- diagonally;
- in very rapid short bursts.
When disturbed, it normally runs to the underside of a leaf, behind bark or into a crevice.
Eyes and sensory perception
Like most spiders, it has eight eyes arranged in two rows on the front of the cephalothorax.
Its eyesight is not as highly developed as that of jumping spiders in the family Salticidae. It is nevertheless sufficient for detecting the movements of small insects and potential threats.
It also detects prey through vibrations and the sensory hairs covering its legs and body.
Identification and similar species
Identification from photographs alone may be difficult because several species of Pulchellodromus and Philodromus have similar sizes, colours and body shapes.
Reliable identification involves examining:
- eye arrangement;
- leg proportions;
- patterns on the cephalothorax and abdomen;
- the reproductive structures of males and females.
Adult males are identified mainly from the structure of their pedipalps, while the female epigyne is examined in females.
External appearance may indicate the genus, but distinguishing closely related species often requires examination under a stereomicroscope.
Difference from true crab spiders
Philodromidae are called running crab spiders because they resemble and move somewhat like the true crab spiders of the family Thomisidae. They are nevertheless separate families.
True crab spiders generally have:
- broader bodies;
- much stronger first and second pairs of legs;
- a more stationary ambush strategy.
Philodromidae are generally:
- more slender;
- faster;
- equipped with more evenly developed legs;
- more active when searching for prey.
Distribution
According to the World Spider Catalog, Pulchellodromus pulchellus has a Mediterranean distribution.
It has been recorded from several regions surrounding the Mediterranean, including southern Europe, North Africa, Mediterranean islands and parts of the eastern Mediterranean.
Cyprus lies within its natural range. The species is part of the island’s native spider fauna and is not considered alien.
Habitat in Cyprus
The species can be found in warm and relatively dry Mediterranean habitats, including:
- low scrub;
- phrygana;
- field margins;
- gardens;
- dry grasslands;
- tree trunks and branches;
- stones and dry plant material;
- semi-urban areas.
Its camouflaged coloration helps it remain hidden from both prey and predators.
The individual in the original post was found in Pallouriotissa, demonstrating that the species can survive within or close to residential areas where suitable vegetation remains.
Record from Pallouriotissa
The photographs in the original post were taken at Pallouriotissa, Nicosia, on 19 April 2020 by Michael Hadjiconstantis.
The record demonstrates the diversity of small spiders occurring in Cypriot gardens and semi-urban habitats. Such spiders are frequently overlooked because of their small size and effective camouflage.
Predatory behaviour
Pulchellodromus pulchellus does not use a sticky capture web. It remains motionless or moves slowly until suitable prey approaches.
It then attacks rapidly, holds the prey with its legs and bites with its chelicerae. Its venom immobilises small arthropods and begins breaking down their internal tissues.
Its prey may include:
- small flies;
- mosquitoes and midges;
- small Hemiptera;
- small moths or caterpillars;
- other insects;
- smaller spiders.
Its precise diet in Cyprus has not been adequately studied.
Silk and shelter
Although it does not construct a capture web, it produces silk and uses it for:
- safety lines while moving;
- temporary retreats;
- protection during moulting;
- constructing an egg sac;
- protecting its eggs.
When moving over plants or rocks, it may leave a fine safety line behind. If it falls, the thread can prevent it from reaching the ground.
Reproduction
During the breeding period, the male searches for adult females and approaches cautiously. Movements of the legs and vibrations may signal that it is a potential mate rather than prey.
Following mating, the female places its eggs inside a silken egg sac, usually in a protected position among leaves, beneath bark or inside a crevice.
As in many Philodromidae, the female may remain close to the egg sac and guard it until the young hatch.
Development
The young resemble miniature adults. They grow through successive moults, during which they shed the old exoskeleton.
Immediately after moulting, the body is soft and vulnerable. The spider remains concealed until its new exoskeleton hardens.
Development is influenced by temperature, humidity and prey availability.
Natural enemies
The species may be preyed upon by:
- birds;
- lizards;
- larger spiders;
- predatory insects;
- parasitoid wasps.
Its small size, speed and camouflage are its principal defences.
Ecological importance
As a predator of small arthropods, Pulchellodromus pulchellus helps regulate insect populations.
It also serves as prey for larger animals and connects different levels of the food chain.
Small predatory spiders are generally beneficial in gardens and agricultural environments. They cannot eliminate pest insects by themselves but form part of their natural biological control.
Is it dangerous to humans?
Pulchellodromus pulchellus is not considered dangerous to humans.
It is small, avoids contact and attempts to escape when disturbed. Its venom is adapted to small arthropods and has no known medical significance for people.
It should not be killed when found inside a house or garden. It can be carefully moved outdoors using a container and a sheet of paper.
Conservation status
There is no known species-level assessment of Pulchellodromus pulchellus on the IUCN Red List.
Insufficient information exists about its population trend in Cyprus. Potential pressures include:
- removal of natural vegetation;
- excessive insecticide use;
- fires;
- intensive management of gardens and fields;
- removal of all dry leaves and natural shelters.
Maintaining varied vegetation and small undisturbed areas within gardens benefits spiders and many other useful arthropods.
