Snake species in Cyprus – How to protect ourselves and what to do if we are bitten
George Konstantinou, President of the Association for the Protection of the Natural Heritage and Biodiversity of Cyprus, offered advice on the programme Protoselido about how to protect ourselves from snakes during the summer and what to do in the event of a snakebite.
Speaking on Protoselido, he stated that there are nine snake species in Cyprus, only one of which is dangerous to humans, meaning venomous. This particular snake is not aggressive. The only circumstances in which such a snake might bite someone are if they accidentally pick it up with their hand, step on it or approach it to within approximately 50 centimetres.
He urged everyone visiting the countryside to wear high footwear when walking through areas with grass. He also said that people should watch where they step because, when a snake is cold, it remains motionless and there is therefore a risk of stepping on it. For example, when a viper sees a person, it may remain motionless because it is slow-moving, which creates the risk that someone might step on it.
George Konstantinou stated: “None of these snake species causes sudden death in humans or severe reactions, unless the person is allergic. Following a viper bite, we have many hours in which to reach a hospital, and there is no reason to panic. What we must do is remain calm, avoid panic and refrain from taking any measures ourselves, including medication, and go to a hospital as quickly as possible.”
Finally, he said that there are many tests that people can undergo to determine whether they are allergic to something. Nevertheless, he does not believe that a test exists to determine whether someone is allergic to snake venom.
