2. Malpolon insignitus (Geoffroy in Savigny, 1827) σαΐττα-σαπίτης
4. Grass snake - Natrix natrix cypriaca (Linnaeus, 1758) νερόφιδο
7. Hemorrhois nummifer (Coin Snake ) (Reus, 1833) δρόπης
Grass snake - Natrix natrix cypriaca - Νερόφιδο

What We Need to Know About the Snakes of Cyprus (Web TV) – By George Konstantinou – Politis Newspaper, 8 May 2018
Important present-day safety note: The following is a faithful translation of an article published in 2018. The advice in the original text to tie the limb above a snakebite should not be followed. Current medical guidance says not to apply a tourniquet or tight bandage and not to rely on bite marks to determine whether a snake was venomous. Keep the person calm and still, immobilise the affected limb, remove rings or tight objects, and immediately call 112 for an ambulance. Do not cut or suck the wound, apply ice, or attempt to capture the snake. World Health Organization, NHS, Cyprus State Health Services Organisation

Cyprus is home to 22 different reptile species: 11 species of lizards, two species of sea turtles, one freshwater turtle and eight species of snakes.
Snakes can be found from sea level up to the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains.
Of the eight snake species found in Cyprus, three are venomous, but only one—the blunt-nosed viper—is dangerous to humans.
During April and May, snakes are more active than in any other months because they emerge from hibernation in search of food and mates. The mild temperatures during these months also allow them to move around for longer periods. During months with very high temperatures, snakes are active early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
If we encounter a snake in the countryside, there is no need to kill it or panic. All we need to do is move away and leave it undisturbed. Snakes do not attack humans unless they feel that their lives are threatened. For a snake to bite, someone usually has to catch it, accidentally step on it or approach it too closely.
To protect ourselves from bites while in the countryside, it is advisable to wear high boots and pay attention to where we step. When someone approaches a snake too closely, it adopts a defensive posture and hisses as a warning not to come any closer. Usually, however, snakes flee as soon as they see a person.
If a snake bites us and we do not know whether it is venomous, we can examine the bite site. According to the original article, a non-venomous snake will leave a reddish, watch-shaped mark, and the wound should be disinfected. If the snake is venomous—namely, a blunt-nosed viper—one or two small puncture marks may be visible.
The original 2018 article advised remaining calm, moving slowly to avoid accelerating the circulation of the venom, loosely tying the limb above the bite and going to the nearest hospital. The tying instruction is now outdated and must not be followed; bite marks are also not a reliable means of determining whether venom has been injected. Wherever we may be in Cyprus, we should seek urgent medical assistance and proceed to the nearest hospital.
If we see a snake in our garden or even inside our house, there is no need to panic. If the snake is non-venomous and is seen in the garden, it will leave by itself if ignored. Snakes in residential areas move from garden to garden in search of food.
If a snake enters the house, we should notify the Fire Service, which has the telephone numbers of private individuals who undertake snake removal. Snakes rarely enter houses. They may sometimes enter during periods of high temperatures while searching for a cool place. A frightened snake may also enter through an open door while attempting to escape from a person.
To discourage snakes from entering our gardens, we should keep them clean and avoid leaving unwanted materials such as piles of stones, wood, grass or other objects that could provide shelter for reptiles or rodents.
Buildings containing chickens or other animals and birds may also attract rodents because of the available food. The rodents, in turn, attract snakes because they are an important part of their diet.
All the snakes of Cyprus are protected by European and Cypriot legislation. However, this law is not enforced effectively, since we frequently see people on the internet posing like heroes beside snakes they have killed, without facing any consequences.
Every living organism has its purpose and role. Without snakes, Cyprus would become overrun with rodents, and the resulting damage to humans would be incalculable.
In general, there is a profound fear of snakes in Cyprus, resulting in people killing them wherever they encounter them. Naturally, this is partly caused by the many irrational and untrue myths passed down from generation to generation.
The eight snake species found in Cyprus
1. Blunt-nosed viper – Macrovipera lebetina – Fina, Viper
The only snake in Cyprus considered dangerous to humans.
It has a wide distribution, from coastal areas to the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains.
2. Montpellier snake – Malpolon insignitus (Geoffroy in Savigny, 1827) – Saïtta, Sapitis
A rear-fanged snake, carrying venom in its rear teeth, but not considered dangerous to humans.
It has a wide distribution, from coastal areas to the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains.
3. Cyprus whip snake – Hierophis cypriensis (Schätti, 1985) – Cyprus snake
It occurs in forested areas of the Troodos Mountains, although it appears to have a wider distribution.
It is endemic to Cyprus, meaning that it lives in Cyprus and nowhere else in the world.
4. Cyprus grass snake – Natrix natrix cypriaca (Linnaeus, 1758) – Water snake
An endemic subspecies of Cyprus.
It is threatened with extinction and is found at Paralimni Lake and in a small area at the foothills of the Troodos Mountains.
5. European cat snake – Telescopus fallax (Fleischmann, 1831) – Xylodropis, Agiofido
A rear-fanged snake, carrying venom in its rear teeth, but not considered dangerous to humans.
It has a wide distribution, from coastal areas to the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains.
6. Large whip snake – Dolichophis jugularis – Therko, Black snake
It has a wide distribution, from coastal areas to the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains.
7. Coin-marked snake – Hemorrhois nummifer (Reuss, 1833) – Dropis
It has a wide distribution, from coastal areas to the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains.
8. Eurasian blind snake – Typhlops vermicularis (Merrem, 1799) – Tyflinos, Anilios
A blind snake that lives beneath stones and underground and feeds on ant eggs.
It is found mainly in lowland areas.
