Η φωτογραφία με τα νεκρά πουλιά αναρτήθηκε στο φ/β το 2015 και είναι αποτέλεσμα νόμιμου κυνηγιού από 3 άτομα μέσα σε μια μέρα στην Κύπρο, μπορείτε να φανταστείτε το μέγεθος της εγκληματικής οικολογικής καταστροφής που δέχονται τα πουλιά αυτά, τα υπόλοιπα λόγια είναι περιττά. Πως είναι δυνατόν να συμβαίνει αυτό σε μια ευρωπαϊκή και πολιτισμένη χώρα με τις ευλογίες του κράτους;

The Thrushes of Cyprus (Web TV) – By George Konstantinou – Politis Newspaper, 3 May 2018
GEORGE KONSTANTINOU, 3 May 2018
Text, photographs and video by George Konstantinou
Thrushes belong to the very large bird family Turdidae, whose members are found throughout the world. Many of these species have a magnificent song comparable to that of the nightingale. They feed on a wide variety of foods, including seeds, worms, insects, snails, ripe fruit and ripe olives.
Their breeding season begins in May. They build their nests in trees and shrubs and lay up to six eggs.
They are migratory birds and visit Cyprus during the winter months, from September until March.
Six of these species are encountered in Cyprus.
These species are:
Song Thrush – Turdus philomelos – Kelaidotsichla, Tzikla
This is the most common species in our country. It can be encountered at all elevations and even in the gardens of houses. It is also the most popular gamebird species in Cyprus.
It migrates in large numbers, mainly at night, using the stars and the moon as a compass.
It winters in southern Europe and Africa.
From late September onwards, we can hear their characteristic calls in the night sky. These calls help the birds maintain the cohesion of the flock.
It likes to eat ripe olives, which it swallows whole. After digestion, it expels the olive stone through its mouth. It also feeds on the fruits of the bay laurel.
These birds are beneficial to the dispersal of forest plant species because they deposit the stones of the fruits they have eaten far away from the place where they consumed them. This was one of the ways in which Cyprus was colonised by forest species after it emerged from the sea several million years ago.
Snails constitute an important part of the Song Thrush’s diet. The bird strikes them against stones to break their shells.
I consider it important to mention a behaviour displayed by these birds in captivity that has not been reported anywhere. Several years ago, I placed a few thrushes that I had found injured inside a large aviary together with other ornamental birds. On several occasions, I saw them seize and swallow the chicks of other birds.
I saw one thrush take a chick from the nest of a Eurasian Collared Dove. The chick was much larger than the thrush’s head, yet the bird managed to swallow it whole.
The Song Thrush does not breed in Cyprus.
Common Blackbird – Turdus merula – Mavropoullos, Kotsifas
This is also a common species in our country. It can be encountered at all elevations and is a popular gamebird in Cyprus.
The Common Blackbird breeds in Europe, Asia and North America. In recent years, several pairs have nested in the Troodos Mountains, and the number of breeding birds continues to increase.
Several years ago, one pair nested in a cherry tree at the Forestry College in Prodromos, at a height of three metres. We stood beneath the tree, but the bird sitting on the eggs did not appear to be disturbed by our presence.
The adult male is black with a yellow bill, while the female is dark brown.
Because of this difference in colour, many hunters call the male “Mavropoullos” and the female “Mavrotzikla”, mistakenly believing that they are two different species.
Redwing – Turdus iliacus – Kokkinotsichla, Kotsinotzikla
This is another common species in Cyprus. It is encountered at all elevations and is a popular gamebird.
It is slightly smaller than the common Song Thrush and has reddish colouring beneath its wings, which is most easily seen when the bird is in flight.
It breeds in northern Europe and northern Asia and winters in southern and western Europe and eastern Asia. It does not breed in Cyprus.
Fieldfare – Turdus pilaris – Kedrotsichla, Trygonotzikla
It has grey colouring on the upper part near the base of the tail, a grey head and a breast marked with dark spots.
It is usually encountered in flocks on the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains and is rarely seen in lowland areas.
It arrives in Cyprus in mid-November. Large numbers reach Cyprus following severe winter weather in Europe.
It breeds in central and northern Europe and northern Asia. It does not breed in Cyprus.
Mistle Thrush – Turdus viscivorus – Tsartsara, Gerakotsichla, Trizara, Dendrotsichla
It has a greyish-brown body with many rounded spots on the breast and abdomen.
This species is also usually encountered in flocks on the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains and is rarely seen in lowland areas. It arrives in Cyprus in mid-November. Large numbers reach Cyprus following severe winter weather in Europe.
It breeds throughout Europe and in northern and western Asia. It does not breed in Cyprus.
Many hunters in Cyprus also call this bird “Trygonotzikla”.
Ring Ouzel – Turdus torquatus – Chionokotsyfas, Vounotzikla
This is a relatively rare bird in Cyprus and is encountered on the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains.
Its behaviour is approximately the same as that of the Common Blackbird.
It breeds in central Europe. It builds its nest in shrubs and among rocks. It does not breed in Cyprus.
Year after year, thrushes are becoming increasingly scarce in our country. This reduction cannot easily be justified, since these birds breed three or even four times each year.
One of the main reasons for their dramatic decline is the relentless hunting pressure they face. There is no hunting quota—that is, no restriction on the number of birds each hunter may kill. There is also illegal hunting with limesticks, nets, electronic calling devices and traps, which destroy these birds by the thousands.
Another important factor responsible for their decline is the prolonged drought affecting our country.
Because I respect nature and always speak reasonably, following this dramatic decline in the numbers of these birds, a hunting quota should be introduced or their hunting should even be prohibited for several years, giving their populations an opportunity to recover.
The competent authorities, which until now have given their blessing to this legal and relentless slaughter, must finally bring it to an end and protect nature and these birds. They have an obligation and a duty to do so.
The photograph showing the dead birds was posted on Facebook in 2015. It shows the result of one day of legal hunting in Cyprus by three people. You can imagine the scale of the criminal ecological destruction being inflicted upon these birds; anything further is unnecessary. How can this be allowed to happen in a European and supposedly civilised country with the state’s blessing?
