The eight snakes of Cyprus - Τα οκτώ είδη φιδιών τις Κύπρου
Below
in English

The Black Whip Snake of Cyprus
Text, photographs and video by George Konstantinou, 13/10/2019
In Cyprus, we encounter twenty-two different species of reptiles: eleven species of lizards, two species of sea turtles, one freshwater turtle and nine species of snakes.
The Black Whip Snake, with the common and scientific name Black Whip Snake – Dolichophis jugularis (Linnaeus, 1758), known in Cyprus as Therko, Black Snake or Pervoláris, belongs to the family Colubridae. It is a diurnal snake and is one of the nine species of snakes found in Cyprus and one of the non-venomous snakes of the island. It can be found from the coast up to the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains and is distributed throughout Cyprus.
It is the longest snake in Cyprus and also in Europe, reaching approximately three metres in length. In Cyprus, however, it is very rare to encounter a Therko of such a large size because of the relentless killing of these snakes by people, who do not allow them to live long enough to reach their full size. The general fear Cypriots have of snakes, together with the various myths surrounding them, results in people killing these magnificent and beneficial animals.
One false and ridiculous myth circulating in Cyprus, which unfortunately most people believe, claims that if you disturb a Therko, it ties itself into a knot and begins striking you like a whip. In fact, most of those who tell this ridiculous story, in an attempt to make it more believable, claim that this behaviour happened to them personally or that they witnessed it happening to someone else.
Another equally false myth says that in the old days people kept Therka in their orchards so that they would eat the harmful rodents that caused extensive damage. It is even said that, in order to keep the Therka permanently in their orchards, people placed containers of milk for them to drink. In reality, Therka do not drink milk, nor do they remain permanently in the same place. They are constantly moving in search of food. It is from this myth that the snake acquired the Cypriot name Pervoláris, meaning “the orchard dweller”.
The Therko never attacks humans unless it feels threatened. For it to bite someone, a person would have to accidentally step on it or attempt to catch it. If it becomes cornered somewhere with no means of escape, it assumes a defensive posture, raising its head, nervously flicking its tongue and hissing in an attempt to frighten you and make you move away. If it has an escape route, at the sight of a human it will disappear within fractions of a second.
If you see a Therko in your garden, the best thing to do is ignore it, and you will most likely never see it again. If one enters your house, do not kill it. Instead, contact the Fire Service, which will provide you with the telephone numbers of specialists who can remove it.
Despite the relentless killing of these snakes by Cypriots, their population fortunately remains at satisfactory levels. I can say that the population of Therka in Cyprus is considerably larger than that of all the other snake species found on the island. About 95% of calls to the Fire Service concerning the removal of snakes from houses, gardens and other premises involve harmless Therka.
Therka, like all snakes, are extremely beneficial to agriculture because a large part of their diet consists of rodents, which spread many diseases and cause incalculable damage to humans. In this way, snakes help maintain the balance of nature. Apart from rodents, they also feed on other small mammals, lizards, birds, frogs and other snakes, even Blunt-nosed Vipers. There is also intense cannibalism among them, meaning that they eat snakes of their own species—the larger snake eating the smaller one.
Therka, like all snakes, mate at the end of spring and beginning of summer. They lay their eggs in midsummer, and these hatch in autumn. Depending on their size, they lay up to twenty elongated, membranous eggs in holes, burrows, rock crevices, beneath large stones and other objects. The eggs hatch through the temperature and humidity of the environment after approximately two months.
The newly hatched Therka are capable of surviving on their own and feed mainly on small lizards until they grow large enough to consume bigger prey. During mating, the snakes remain motionless with their bodies joined together.
Many times, we see two snakes behaving strangely, intertwining with each other and rising from the ground as though they were dancing. Most people believe that what they are witnessing is a mating ritual, but this is incorrect. What they are actually seeing is a confrontation between two males over territorial dominance. This fight is not violent and results in the stronger male prevailing and the weaker one retreating.
They are extremely fast and agile snakes and have the ability to climb rough walls, dry-stone walls, cliffs and even trees with great ease. On one occasion, I was asked to remove a Therko from the roof of a four-storey apartment building in the heart of Nicosia, while on another occasion I had to remove one from a very tall tree in the garden of a house.
The colour of young Therka differs from that of adults. From hatching until approximately three years of age, they have a greenish colour with brown markings. After the age of three, they gradually acquire their glossy black colour. The upper part of the body is black, while the belly is white. Many people are unaware of this and, when they see a young Therko, believe that it is a different species of snake.
Therka, like all snake species, shed their skin several times a year. The purpose of shedding is to allow them to grow, while at the same time helping them rid themselves of possible parasites, scratches and marks from healed wounds.
The process of shedding does not happen from one moment to the next but lasts several days. Approximately six to seven days before shedding, the snake's eyes become completely white as the old skin separates from the eyes, resulting in the snake being unable to see. It finds a safe place and coils up until the time comes to shed. During shedding, it rubs itself against pieces of wood or stones, and the skin gradually begins to come off from the head towards the tail, eventually coming off whole.
During this process, the snake is vulnerable to predators and does not feed at all. In Cyprus, the shed skin of snakes is known by various traditional names, including forema, ntyma, petsia or maderi tis koufis.
I would like to mention a strange behaviour of this species that I have never observed in any other species of snake, nor have I seen it mentioned in any literature. I once found a large Therko at the bottom of a well approximately eight metres deep, in the water. While attempting to rescue it, I noticed that every so often the snake opened its mouth and produced a faint sound resembling crying.
Several years later, I removed a Therko from a house and placed it in a special bag. Before I released it, I heard it several times producing exactly the same sound as the snake in the well. It is remarkable that when they become trapped somewhere with no means of escape, they produce sounds of distress as though they were crying.
Apart from humans, the enemies of Therka in Cyprus include birds of prey, cats and foxes. When the snakes are very young, they are also preyed upon by other species of snakes, hedgehogs and, strange as it may seem, weasels—when the prey becomes the predator.
Apart from Cyprus, Therka are found in Greece, Malta, Turkey, Israel, Jordan, Syria, Kuwait, Lebanon, Iraq and Iran. In Syria, Therka and water snakes are sold by the hundreds in pet shops—something I have seen with my own eyes—and I genuinely do not understand why people buy them or for what purpose.
Therka are protected under European Directive 92/43/EEC, as well as under Cypriot Law 153(I)2003, which provide for very severe penalties for killing them. Unfortunately, these laws are not enforced and nobody protests.
I do not want to tar everyone with the same brush, but unfortunately most animal lovers in Cyprus limit their love of animals to dogs and cats, while all the other animals can go to hell. I am not saying that we should not love dogs and cats, but loving animals means respecting, loving and protecting, in every possible way, all the animals on our planet.
Everything is part of a chain. Every species that disappears from our planet brings the human race one step closer to extinction.
DO NOT kill them. They are completely harmless; they are regulators of nature.
