The eight snakes of Cyprus - Τα οκτώ είδη φιδιών τις Κύπρου

Below in English.

Text and photographs by George Konstantinou In Cyprus, we encounter 23 different species of reptiles: 11 species of lizards, two species of sea turtles, one freshwater turtle and nine species of snakes. Snakes are found from sea level up to the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains. Of the eight species of snakes found in Cyprus, three are venomous, but only one is dangerous to humans: the blunt-nosed viper. The two venomous species that are not dangerous are the Montpellier snake and the cat snake. These are rear-fanged snakes, meaning that their teeth are located at the back of the mouth, and their venom is harmless to humans. The reason their teeth are positioned at the rear of the mouth is so that they can inject venom into their prey while swallowing it and paralyse it. Therefore, in the event of a bite, they cannot effectively deliver their venom. One of the nine snakes found in Cyprus is the European blind snake, also known as the European worm snake – Xerotyphlops (Typhlops) vermicularis (Merrem, 1799), known in Greek as Tyflinos, Anilios, Skoulikofido or Typhlops the worm-like. It belongs to the family Typhlopidae and to the genus Xerotyphlops. Throughout the world, more than 200 different species of blind snakes belonging to this family and to 18 different genera are found. They occur mainly in tropical and subtropical regions of the planet. They are found mainly in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia and America, throughout mainland Australia and on various islands. It should be noted that only the blind snake of the genus Xerotyphlops occurs in Cyprus and Europe. The blind snake is a common species, it is non-venomous and completely harmless to humans. It is a very small snake that does not exceed 30–35 centimetres and is the smallest snake in Cyprus as well as in the whole of Europe. Although it is a common species in Cyprus, it is unknown to most people because of its secretive behaviour underground. Also because of its secretive behaviour, many aspects of the biology of this species remain unknown, with insufficient information available. When you hold it in your hand, it does not even attempt to bite. It simply presses strongly with its hard tail, which resembles a horn, in an effort to escape. It has very small teeth in the lower jaw for holding its prey. The blind snake is a blind species. In place of eyes, it has two black spots covered by skin, which are used to detect light. It lives under stones and in the soil, inside burrows that it digs itself. Usually, after heavy rainfall, it emerges from the ground and hides under stones so that it does not drown. It has a vivid pink colour and in appearance closely resembles an earthworm, a worm that lives in the soil. The differences between the blind snake and the earthworm are the following: the blind snake is dry, moves like a snake, has scales on its body and has two spots where its eyes are located, while the earthworm is moist, does not move like a snake, has no scales and no eyes. It feeds on ants and ant eggs, but it is very likely that it also feeds on other types of invertebrates. We encounter it mainly in lowland areas. It is primarily nocturnal and at night it comes to the surface in search of food. It lays up to eight eggs in burrows inside the soil. Apart from Cyprus, the blind snake is found in the Balkans as far as the Aegean Islands and from Cyprus eastwards to Afghanistan. The natural enemies of the blind snake when it comes to the surface at night are foxes, cats, hedgehogs, rats and nocturnal birds of prey such as owls. I have observed several owl nests at night, and among the various prey items brought to the chicks were several blind snakes, proving that they come out wandering at night. Humans are also enemies of the blind snake, killing it wherever they find it because of a myth claiming that the blind snake has two heads and that its bite is fatal. Many grandparents and parents tell these ridiculous myths to their young children, with the result that the children develop fears that they carry throughout their lives and later pass on to their own children. Many people, when telling such a ridiculous myth, make it seem more believable by claiming that they witnessed the incident with their own eyes. All these ridiculous myths—and there are many of them—concerning numerous species of our country are passed from generation to generation. People believe them and kill the animals. In reality, all these myths work against the biodiversity of our country. George Konstantinou From my article in the newspaper Politis

Malpolon insignitus (Geoffroy in Savigny, 1827) Σαΐττα - Σαπίτης.

Malpolon insignitus (Geoffroy in Savigny, 1827) Σαΐττα - Σαπίτης.

The Venomous but Harmless-to-Humans Snakes of Cyprus: Montpellier Snake and European Cat Snake

GEORGE KONSTANTINOU, 17/11/2019

Text and photographs by George Konstantinou

In Cyprus, we encounter 23 different species of reptiles: 11 species of lizards, two species of sea turtles, one freshwater turtle and nine species of snakes.

Of the nine snake species found in Cyprus, three are venomous, but only one, the Blunt-nosed Viper, is dangerous to humans. The other two venomous snakes that are not considered dangerous to humans are the Montpellier Snake and the European Cat Snake. Both are rear-fanged snakes, meaning that their venom-delivering teeth are located towards the back of the upper jaw, and their venom is not considered dangerous to humans.

The reason their fangs are positioned towards the back of the mouth is to introduce venom into their prey while swallowing it. Because the fangs are situated quite far back in the mouth, it is difficult for these snakes to inject venom during an ordinary defensive bite.

In the very rare event that venom is introduced into a person, its effects are generally mild and may include slight swelling at the site of the bite, some pain and possibly a mild fever. Problems could potentially occur in individuals with an allergic reaction, but, as mentioned above, envenomation from the bite of a rear-fanged snake is very uncommon.

For such a snake to introduce venom effectively, a finger would normally have to reach far back into its mouth. In Cyprus, we have never had serious consequences from the bites of these snakes.

The Montpellier Snake and European Cat Snake do not normally attack people. A bite is most likely to occur if someone accidentally steps on or handles one.

Both snakes subdue their prey by biting it and using their bodies to restrain it. With rapid movements, they coil around their prey and hold it before beginning to swallow it, normally starting from the head. Venom may also assist in subduing the prey and possibly in the digestive process.

Both species are protected under the European Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC as well as Cyprus Law 153(I)/2003.

Montpellier Snake – Malpolon insignitus

The Montpellier Snake, known in Cyprus as Saita or Sapitis, has the common English name Montpellier Snake and the scientific name Malpolon insignitus (Geoffroy in Savigny, 1827). It belongs to the family Lamprophiidae.

It has a wide distribution in Cyprus, from coastal areas to the higher elevations of the Troodos Mountains. It is a common species on the island and usually avoids inhabited areas.

This is also indicated by the hundreds of calls received by the Fire Service concerning snakes entering houses. At least in the Nicosia District, only in one case was the snake involved a Montpellier Snake.

It is a diurnal snake that feeds on lizards—one of its favourite prey species being the Starred Agama—as well as birds, amphibians, rodents, other small mammals and even other snakes.

The Montpellier Snake can grow quite large and may exceed two metres in length, although seeing such a large individual is very rare because many snakes are killed by people.

When young, its colour is brown with small white spots and white markings on the head. Adults have a more uniform greyish to olive-green colour, with a whitish-yellow underside.

It is an extremely fast snake, which explains its Cypriot name Saita, meaning something moving like an arrow. It is a capable climber, hunter and swimmer.

A characteristic behaviour can be observed when it hears a disturbance or attempts to obtain a better view of its surroundings. It raises its head and the front part of its body high above the ground, somewhat reminiscent of a cobra, sometimes lifting as much as one-third of its body.

When it feels threatened, it hisses loudly in an attempt to frighten and warn whatever is approaching it.

It mates in spring and lays eggs during the summer. Depending on the size of the female, the clutch may contain approximately 5 to 20 eggs. These develop under ambient environmental temperatures and hatch after approximately two months, towards autumn.

Outside Cyprus, the species occurs in North Africa, Greece and western Asia, from Turkey and the Mediterranean coasts of the Middle East eastwards towards Iran.

European Cat Snake – Telescopus fallax cyprianus

The European Cat Snake, known in Cyprus as Xylodropis or Agiofido, has the scientific name Telescopus fallax cyprianus (Fleischmann, 1831) and belongs to the family Colubridae.

It also has a wide distribution in Cyprus, from coastal areas to the higher elevations of the Troodos Mountains.

The Cypriot form is an endemic subspecies of Cyprus and is the second-smallest snake on the island, reaching approximately 80–100 centimetres in length.

It is primarily a nocturnal snake and feeds on lizards, young birds and small mammals. It is a common species in Cyprus and is particularly common in the Paphos District.

The European Cat Snake is an excellent climber. It climbs dry-stone walls, other walls and tree trunks while searching for its preferred prey, particularly lizards.

When it feels threatened, despite its relatively small size, it can hiss loudly in an attempt to frighten and warn an approaching animal or person.

It is generally a slow-moving snake, which unfortunately makes it easier for people to approach and kill it.

Its pupils are vertically slit-shaped and expand at night to facilitate nocturnal vision, similar to those of the Blunt-nosed Viper.

Its body is greyish-beige with dark brown markings arranged along the upper part of the back. These markings can make it superficially resemble the Blunt-nosed Viper, and for this reason many people confuse it with the dangerous viper and kill it.

The European Cat Snake mates in spring and lays its eggs during summer. Depending on the size of the female, it lays approximately 5 to 10 eggs, which develop under ambient environmental temperatures and hatch after approximately two months, towards autumn.

Outside Cyprus, the species Telescopus fallax occurs in southeastern Europe and western Asia, including Turkey and the Mediterranean regions of the Middle East extending towards Iran.

Natural Enemies and Human Persecution

The main enemies of these two snakes include, as is so often the case, humans who kill them whenever they encounter them, as well as birds of prey, foxes and other snakes.

Both the Montpellier Snake and the European Cat Snake form part of the natural biodiversity of Cyprus. Although both possess venom, their biology and rear-fanged dentition are very different from those of the Blunt-nosed Viper, the venomous snake of Cyprus that represents a significant medical risk to humans.

The eight snakes of Cyprus - Τα οκτώ είδη φιδιών τις Κύπρου

The Black Whip Snake of Cyprus

Text, photographs and video by George Konstantinou, 13/10/2019

In Cyprus, we encounter twenty-two different species of reptiles: eleven species of lizards, two species of sea turtles, one freshwater turtle and nine species of snakes.

The Black Whip Snake, with the common and scientific name Black Whip Snake – Dolichophis jugularis (Linnaeus, 1758), known in Cyprus as Therko, Black Snake or Pervoláris, belongs to the family Colubridae. It is a diurnal snake and is one of the nine species of snakes found in Cyprus and one of the non-venomous snakes of the island. It can be found from the coast up to the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains and is distributed throughout Cyprus.

It is the longest snake in Cyprus and also in Europe, reaching approximately three metres in length. In Cyprus, however, it is very rare to encounter a Therko of such a large size because of the relentless killing of these snakes by people, who do not allow them to live long enough to reach their full size. The general fear Cypriots have of snakes, together with the various myths surrounding them, results in people killing these magnificent and beneficial animals.

One false and ridiculous myth circulating in Cyprus, which unfortunately most people believe, claims that if you disturb a Therko, it ties itself into a knot and begins striking you like a whip. In fact, most of those who tell this ridiculous story, in an attempt to make it more believable, claim that this behaviour happened to them personally or that they witnessed it happening to someone else.

Another equally false myth says that in the old days people kept Therka in their orchards so that they would eat the harmful rodents that caused extensive damage. It is even said that, in order to keep the Therka permanently in their orchards, people placed containers of milk for them to drink. In reality, Therka do not drink milk, nor do they remain permanently in the same place. They are constantly moving in search of food. It is from this myth that the snake acquired the Cypriot name Pervoláris, meaning “the orchard dweller”.

The Therko never attacks humans unless it feels threatened. For it to bite someone, a person would have to accidentally step on it or attempt to catch it. If it becomes cornered somewhere with no means of escape, it assumes a defensive posture, raising its head, nervously flicking its tongue and hissing in an attempt to frighten you and make you move away. If it has an escape route, at the sight of a human it will disappear within fractions of a second.

If you see a Therko in your garden, the best thing to do is ignore it, and you will most likely never see it again. If one enters your house, do not kill it. Instead, contact the Fire Service, which will provide you with the telephone numbers of specialists who can remove it.

Despite the relentless killing of these snakes by Cypriots, their population fortunately remains at satisfactory levels. I can say that the population of Therka in Cyprus is considerably larger than that of all the other snake species found on the island. About 95% of calls to the Fire Service concerning the removal of snakes from houses, gardens and other premises involve harmless Therka.

Therka, like all snakes, are extremely beneficial to agriculture because a large part of their diet consists of rodents, which spread many diseases and cause incalculable damage to humans. In this way, snakes help maintain the balance of nature. Apart from rodents, they also feed on other small mammals, lizards, birds, frogs and other snakes, even Blunt-nosed Vipers. There is also intense cannibalism among them, meaning that they eat snakes of their own species—the larger snake eating the smaller one.

Therka, like all snakes, mate at the end of spring and beginning of summer. They lay their eggs in midsummer, and these hatch in autumn. Depending on their size, they lay up to twenty elongated, membranous eggs in holes, burrows, rock crevices, beneath large stones and other objects. The eggs hatch through the temperature and humidity of the environment after approximately two months.

The newly hatched Therka are capable of surviving on their own and feed mainly on small lizards until they grow large enough to consume bigger prey. During mating, the snakes remain motionless with their bodies joined together.

Many times, we see two snakes behaving strangely, intertwining with each other and rising from the ground as though they were dancing. Most people believe that what they are witnessing is a mating ritual, but this is incorrect. What they are actually seeing is a confrontation between two males over territorial dominance. This fight is not violent and results in the stronger male prevailing and the weaker one retreating.

They are extremely fast and agile snakes and have the ability to climb rough walls, dry-stone walls, cliffs and even trees with great ease. On one occasion, I was asked to remove a Therko from the roof of a four-storey apartment building in the heart of Nicosia, while on another occasion I had to remove one from a very tall tree in the garden of a house.

The colour of young Therka differs from that of adults. From hatching until approximately three years of age, they have a greenish colour with brown markings. After the age of three, they gradually acquire their glossy black colour. The upper part of the body is black, while the belly is white. Many people are unaware of this and, when they see a young Therko, believe that it is a different species of snake.

Therka, like all snake species, shed their skin several times a year. The purpose of shedding is to allow them to grow, while at the same time helping them rid themselves of possible parasites, scratches and marks from healed wounds.

The process of shedding does not happen from one moment to the next but lasts several days. Approximately six to seven days before shedding, the snake's eyes become completely white as the old skin separates from the eyes, resulting in the snake being unable to see. It finds a safe place and coils up until the time comes to shed. During shedding, it rubs itself against pieces of wood or stones, and the skin gradually begins to come off from the head towards the tail, eventually coming off whole.

During this process, the snake is vulnerable to predators and does not feed at all. In Cyprus, the shed skin of snakes is known by various traditional names, including forema, ntyma, petsia or maderi tis koufis.

I would like to mention a strange behaviour of this species that I have never observed in any other species of snake, nor have I seen it mentioned in any literature. I once found a large Therko at the bottom of a well approximately eight metres deep, in the water. While attempting to rescue it, I noticed that every so often the snake opened its mouth and produced a faint sound resembling crying.

Several years later, I removed a Therko from a house and placed it in a special bag. Before I released it, I heard it several times producing exactly the same sound as the snake in the well. It is remarkable that when they become trapped somewhere with no means of escape, they produce sounds of distress as though they were crying.

Apart from humans, the enemies of Therka in Cyprus include birds of prey, cats and foxes. When the snakes are very young, they are also preyed upon by other species of snakes, hedgehogs and, strange as it may seem, weasels—when the prey becomes the predator.

Apart from Cyprus, Therka are found in Greece, Malta, Turkey, Israel, Jordan, Syria, Kuwait, Lebanon, Iraq and Iran. In Syria, Therka and water snakes are sold by the hundreds in pet shops—something I have seen with my own eyes—and I genuinely do not understand why people buy them or for what purpose.

Therka are protected under European Directive 92/43/EEC, as well as under Cypriot Law 153(I)2003, which provide for very severe penalties for killing them. Unfortunately, these laws are not enforced and nobody protests.

I do not want to tar everyone with the same brush, but unfortunately most animal lovers in Cyprus limit their love of animals to dogs and cats, while all the other animals can go to hell. I am not saying that we should not love dogs and cats, but loving animals means respecting, loving and protecting, in every possible way, all the animals on our planet.

Everything is part of a chain. Every species that disappears from our planet brings the human race one step closer to extinction.

DO NOT kill them. They are completely harmless; they are regulators of nature.
