The eight snakes of Cyprus - Τα οκτώ είδη φιδιών τις Κύπρου
Below in English.

In Cyprus, we encounter 23 different species of reptiles: 11 species of lizards, two species of sea turtles, one freshwater turtle and nine species of snakes. Snakes are found from sea level up to the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains.
Of the eight species of snakes found in Cyprus, three are venomous, but only one is dangerous to humans: the blunt-nosed viper. The two venomous species that are not dangerous are the Montpellier snake and the cat snake. These are rear-fanged snakes, meaning that their teeth are located at the back of the mouth, and their venom is harmless to humans. The reason their teeth are positioned at the rear of the mouth is so that they can inject venom into their prey while swallowing it and paralyse it. Therefore, in the event of a bite, they cannot effectively deliver their venom.
One of the nine snakes found in Cyprus is the European blind snake, also known as the European worm snake – Xerotyphlops (Typhlops) vermicularis (Merrem, 1799), known in Greek as Tyflinos, Anilios, Skoulikofido or Typhlops the worm-like. It belongs to the family Typhlopidae and to the genus Xerotyphlops.
Throughout the world, more than 200 different species of blind snakes belonging to this family and to 18 different genera are found. They occur mainly in tropical and subtropical regions of the planet. They are found mainly in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia and America, throughout mainland Australia and on various islands. It should be noted that only the blind snake of the genus Xerotyphlops occurs in Cyprus and Europe.
The blind snake is a common species, it is non-venomous and completely harmless to humans. It is a very small snake that does not exceed 30–35 centimetres and is the smallest snake in Cyprus as well as in the whole of Europe. Although it is a common species in Cyprus, it is unknown to most people because of its secretive behaviour underground. Also because of its secretive behaviour, many aspects of the biology of this species remain unknown, with insufficient information available.
When you hold it in your hand, it does not even attempt to bite. It simply presses strongly with its hard tail, which resembles a horn, in an effort to escape. It has very small teeth in the lower jaw for holding its prey. The blind snake is a blind species. In place of eyes, it has two black spots covered by skin, which are used to detect light.
It lives under stones and in the soil, inside burrows that it digs itself. Usually, after heavy rainfall, it emerges from the ground and hides under stones so that it does not drown. It has a vivid pink colour and in appearance closely resembles an earthworm, a worm that lives in the soil.
The differences between the blind snake and the earthworm are the following: the blind snake is dry, moves like a snake, has scales on its body and has two spots where its eyes are located, while the earthworm is moist, does not move like a snake, has no scales and no eyes.
It feeds on ants and ant eggs, but it is very likely that it also feeds on other types of invertebrates. We encounter it mainly in lowland areas. It is primarily nocturnal and at night it comes to the surface in search of food. It lays up to eight eggs in burrows inside the soil.
Apart from Cyprus, the blind snake is found in the Balkans as far as the Aegean Islands and from Cyprus eastwards to Afghanistan.
The natural enemies of the blind snake when it comes to the surface at night are foxes, cats, hedgehogs, rats and nocturnal birds of prey such as owls. I have observed several owl nests at night, and among the various prey items brought to the chicks were several blind snakes, proving that they come out wandering at night.
Humans are also enemies of the blind snake, killing it wherever they find it because of a myth claiming that the blind snake has two heads and that its bite is fatal. Many grandparents and parents tell these ridiculous myths to their young children, with the result that the children develop fears that they carry throughout their lives and later pass on to their own children.
Many people, when telling such a ridiculous myth, make it seem more believable by claiming that they witnessed the incident with their own eyes. All these ridiculous myths—and there are many of them—concerning numerous species of our country are passed from generation to generation. People believe them and kill the animals. In reality, all these myths work against the biodiversity of our country.
