Banded demoiselle (Calopteryx splendens)

Black stream glider (Trithemis festiva).

Blue emperor (Anax imperator)

Blue-tailed Damselfly (Ischnura elegans)

Common winter damselfly (Sympecma fusca).

Crocothemis erythraea

Dragonflies, commonly known to us as “little aeroplanes,” belong to the class of insects and to the order Odonata. They are divided into two suborders: dragonflies, Anisoptera, and damselflies, Zygoptera. The Zygoptera are classified into 18 families and the Anisoptera into four families. The name “dragonfly” comes from the Latin word libella, meaning water level, and is related to the places where they live: springs, rivers, lakes and every kind of wetland. Dragonflies are among the most beloved insects for people, after butterflies.

More than 6,000 different species have been recorded on the planet. Approximately 120 species have been recorded in Europe, while 37 different species have been recorded in Cyprus, although some of them are very rare species. These are insects that have survived through millions of years, since their fossils have been found from the Triassic period, 320 million years ago. The largest dragonfly species was found as a fossil and had a wingspan of 70 centimetres. They are carnivorous insects and highly skilled predators, and perhaps this is what has enabled them to survive until today. We encounter them in many wonderful colours, such as red, purple, blue, light blue, yellow and many others. Usually, the female and the male have different colours, and many people think they are different species. The Anisoptera have two pairs of wings, and when they sit still, they hold their wings open and perpendicular to their bodies, while the Zygoptera, which also have two pairs of wings, hold their wings closed when at rest. They can lay their eggs, catch their prey and mate while in flight. The female lays her eggs in flight on the surface of the water and on floating plants. Their larvae live in the water and feed mainly on the larvae of other aquatic insects, invertebrates, small fish and tadpoles. They breathe through gills in the anus and can propel themselves rapidly by expelling water from the anus. When their life as larvae comes to an end, they emerge from the water, usually at night, climbing onto vegetation near the water, where they remain motionless. Then the skin on their back splits open and the fully developed insect emerges from inside, exactly as a butterfly emerges from its cocoon.

The mature winged insects feed on mosquitoes, flies, butterflies, bees and generally any insect they can catch. They are excellent hunters and hunt other insects in two ways. Some species fly around searching for prey, while other species sit in a place with a good view, waiting for passing prey. They then rush towards it, seize it and eat it either in the air or after landing somewhere. They can fly in every direction: forwards, backwards, upwards and downwards. They can also fly with their bodies touching the surface of the water.

Dragonflies spend most of their lives as nymphs beneath the surface of the water. In the larval stage, depending on the species, they live for one to five years in the water, while as adult insects they have a very short lifespan. Depending on the species and the climate of the region in which they live, their adult life ranges from a few weeks to one year. Their body size varies according to the species and ranges from 2 to 9 centimetres in length, with a wingspan of 2 to 11 centimetres. They have an exoskeleton, and their body consists of three sections: the head with very large eyes, the thorax with their six legs, and the abdomen. On their head they have two short, thin antennae and two large eyes. Each eye consists of 30,000 lenses. Their microscopic brain is able to decode the signals provided by these lenses and detect the slightest movement around them.

We usually encounter them near lakes, streams, rivers, marshes and generally wherever there is water, although some species can also be found in areas very far from water. Odonata are found throughout the world, with the exception of the polar regions. The greatest variety is found in tropical zones.

They are very fast and silent insects and are the fastest insects on the planet, with some species able to reach speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour. Some species, such as those of the genus Anax, which are also the largest of all the species found in our country, rise to great heights when the weather permits and hunt other insects, mainly bees. The hunting abilities of the dragonfly are astonishing. It manages to kill 95% of its targets, a fact that places it very high on the list of the most efficient predators in the world.

Dragonflies are very beneficial because they keep mosquito populations low, since mosquitoes are their main food during the larval stage, when they eat mosquito eggs and larvae.

The dragonfly is an insect that has been revered as a symbol of mysticism, as it represents rebirth, transformation and adaptability, since the era of the Minoan civilisation.

Natural enemies of dragonflies include drought, since these insects require water in order to complete their life cycle. Dragonflies are a delicacy for many birds of prey, such as some species of falcons, as well as insect-eating birds, large spiders, reptiles and amphibians. Destruction of dragonfly populations caused by human factors includes spraying and the destruction of wetlands, with the result that dragonflies are unable to reproduce.

Because of their great variety of colours and their beauty, dragonflies are an excellent subject for many wildlife photographers.
