The Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.): The Flower of Purity and Renewal

Nelumbo nucifera, commonly known as the Sacred Lotus, Indian Lotus, or simply Lotus, is one of the world's most iconic aquatic plants. It belongs to the family Nelumbonaceae and has long been revered throughout Asia as a symbol of purity, wisdom and spiritual rebirth. Its extraordinary beauty, combined with its remarkable biological adaptations, has made it one of the most celebrated flowering plants in both nature and human culture.

The species was first scientifically described in 1788 by the German botanist Joseph Gaertner. Its natural distribution extends from India and Sri Lanka through China, Japan and Southeast Asia to northern Australia. Today it is cultivated throughout much of the world as an ornamental plant and is also valued for its cultural, culinary and medicinal importance.

The Sacred Lotus thrives in lakes, ponds, slow-moving rivers and freshwater wetlands. Its thick underground rhizomes anchor firmly in the mud, while its impressive circular leaves and spectacular flowers rise gracefully above the water surface on long, flexible stalks.

The leaves may exceed 60 centimetres in diameter, while the flowers commonly reach 20–30 centimetres across. Their petals range from pure white to soft pink or deep rose, surrounding a distinctive yellow cone-shaped receptacle that later develops into the characteristic seed pod containing numerous large seeds.

One of the most remarkable features of the Sacred Lotus is the famous "Lotus Effect." The surface of its leaves is covered with microscopic wax-coated structures that repel both water and dirt. As water droplets roll across the leaf, they collect dust particles and other contaminants, leaving the surface remarkably clean. This natural self-cleaning mechanism has inspired the development of numerous modern technologies, including self-cleaning paints, glass and other advanced materials.

The species also possesses another extraordinary adaptation. During flowering, the blossoms are capable of regulating their own temperature, maintaining it within a relatively stable range even when surrounding air temperatures fluctuate considerably. This rare phenomenon is believed to enhance the attraction of insect pollinators.

The flowers are pollinated mainly by beetles and bees, while the seeds are renowned for their exceptional longevity. Viable Sacred Lotus seeds more than 1,000 years old have successfully germinated, making them among the longest-living seeds ever recorded in the plant kingdom.

Throughout Asia, almost every part of the plant is utilised. The rhizomes, seeds and young shoots are widely consumed as food, while various plant parts have been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. Beyond its practical uses, the lotus occupies a central place in the religious traditions of Buddhism, Hinduism and several other Asian cultures, where it symbolises enlightenment, spiritual awakening and the triumph of purity over adversity.

In Cyprus, the Sacred Lotus is not a native species. It is occasionally cultivated in ornamental ponds, botanical gardens and private water gardens, where its spectacular flowers and elegant foliage make it one of the most admired aquatic plants.

More than simply a beautiful flower, the Sacred Lotus has become one of humanity's most enduring symbols. Rising each year from the muddy depths to produce immaculate blossoms above the water, it represents hope, renewal and the ability of life to flourish even under challenging conditions.

Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae Banks): A Flower That Resembles an Exotic Bird

Strelitzia reginae, commonly known as the Bird of Paradise Flower, Crane Flower, or Isigude, is one of the most recognisable and spectacular ornamental plants in the world. Its extraordinary flowers, with their vivid orange and blue colours, resemble the head of an exotic bird with a raised crest, a characteristic that gave rise to its best-known common name.

It belongs to the family Strelitziaceae, a small family of tropical and subtropical plants that also includes other species of the genus Strelitzia. Despite its exotic appearance, Strelitzia reginae does not originate from tropical islands but from South Africa, where it grows naturally in the eastern and southern parts of the country.

The scientific name Strelitzia was given in honour of Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III of Great Britain, who was born into the German House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The specific epithet reginae derives from the Latin word for “queen”, further emphasising the royal origin of the plant’s name.

Strelitzia reginae is a perennial, evergreen plant that develops into dense clumps. It usually reaches approximately 1–2 metres in height, although under ideal conditions it may grow larger. It does not develop a true woody trunk. Instead, its large leaves emerge from the base on long, strong stalks.

The leaves are large, elongated to oval, leathery and greyish-green, somewhat resembling those of a banana plant. This similarity is not entirely coincidental, as strelitzias and bananas belong to related evolutionary groups within the order Zingiberales.

The most spectacular feature of the plant is undoubtedly its flower.

A large, horizontal, rigid bract develops at the end of a strong flowering stem and resembles the beak of a bird. From this structure, the flowers emerge successively, displaying brilliant orange sepals and deep blue petals. The entire floral structure so strongly resembles a colourful bird that the plant became universally known as the Bird of Paradise.

Behind this remarkable appearance, however, lies an equally fascinating pollination mechanism.

In its native South Africa, the plant is pollinated mainly by nectar-feeding birds, particularly sunbirds. When a bird lands on the blue petals in order to reach the nectar, its weight causes the floral structure to open and expose the anthers. Pollen is deposited on the bird’s feet and body and is subsequently transferred to other flowers that it visits.

This represents a remarkable example of the close evolutionary relationship that can develop between flowering plants and their pollinators.

Following successful pollination, hard seed capsules develop. When mature, these open to reveal dark seeds bearing a distinctive bright orange aril. This striking colour is thought to assist in attracting animals that may contribute to seed dispersal.

Strelitzia reginae thrives in warmth and abundant light. It grows best in sunny or lightly shaded positions and in well-drained soil. Once established, it can tolerate short periods of drought, although regular watering during active growth encourages stronger development and more abundant flowering.

These characteristics have contributed to its successful cultivation in many regions with a Mediterranean climate, including Cyprus.

In Cyprus, the Bird of Paradise is not a native species, but it is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant in private gardens, parks, hotel grounds, courtyards and other landscaped areas. The island’s mild climate, particularly in coastal and lowland regions, allows the species to grow outdoors and produce its spectacular flowers successfully.

Under favourable conditions, a mature plant may produce numerous flowers during the same flowering season. Individual flowering stems can also produce more than one flower successively, extending the overall flowering period.

The species can be propagated both by seed and by division of mature clumps. Plants grown from seed develop relatively slowly and may require several years before reaching flowering maturity. For this reason, division is often preferred in horticultural cultivation when mature plants are available.

Beyond its botanical interest, Strelitzia reginae has acquired considerable importance in the international ornamental plant trade. Its flowers are widely used as cut flowers because of their spectacular appearance, durability and ability to remain attractive for a considerable period after cutting.

The Bird of Paradise is one of the finest examples of how evolution can create forms that appear almost like living works of art. A plant originating in South Africa and subsequently carried around the world through cultivation has today become a familiar feature of gardens in many Mediterranean and subtropical regions.

And in Cyprus, when its brilliant orange and blue flowers rise between the large green leaves, it is easy to understand why this remarkable plant was given such a poetic name: the Bird of Paradise.

Porcelainflower or Wax Plant – Hoya carnosa (L.f.) R.Br.

Η Hoya carnosa (L.f.)

Porcelainflower or Wax Plant – Hoya carnosa (L.f.) R.Br. – The Remarkable Plant with Flowers That Look Like Porcelain

Hoya carnosa (L.f.) R.Br., commonly known as the Porcelainflower, Wax Plant or Wax Flower, is one of the most distinctive and popular ornamental plants grown in gardens, patios and balconies. It is admired for its thick, fleshy leaves and, above all, for its extraordinary flowers, which are so symmetrical and glossy that they often appear to have been made from wax or porcelain.

It belongs to the family Apocynaceae and to the large genus Hoya, which contains hundreds of species, many cultivated as ornamental plants for their attractive foliage and spectacular flowers.

Hoya carnosa originates from parts of East Asia and neighbouring regions and is now cultivated in many parts of the world as a houseplant or as an ornamental plant for sheltered gardens, patios and balconies. In Cyprus, the warm Mediterranean climate can provide very favourable conditions for its cultivation when it is grown in a suitable protected position.

A Hardy Climbing Plant

Hoya carnosa is an evergreen, perennial climbing or trailing plant.

Its long, flexible stems can grow to considerable lengths. When suitable support is available, they climb and form dense growth. When cultivated in hanging containers, the stems can instead be allowed to cascade freely, creating an attractive ornamental display.

The leaves are generally arranged opposite one another along the stems. They are thick, fleshy and waxy, usually oval to elliptical in shape and deep green in colour.

Their succulent texture allows the plant to store water and withstand short periods of dryness.

This ability is one of the reasons why an established Wax Plant can be relatively resilient when compared with many more delicate ornamental species.

Flowers Like Miniature Works of Art

The most remarkable feature of Hoya carnosa is undoubtedly its flowering display.

The flowers are produced in characteristic rounded or hemispherical clusters, each consisting of numerous small individual blossoms.

Every flower displays an almost perfect five-pointed star-shaped symmetry.

The outer corolla consists of five thick lobes and is usually white to pale pink. Its surface can appear slightly velvety or wax-like.

At the centre lies a second, smaller star-shaped structure known as the corona, which is often a deeper shade of pink or reddish-pink.

The combination of these two superimposed star shapes creates an extraordinarily symmetrical flower that can look more like a tiny decorative object than a living blossom.

It is precisely this appearance that gave the plant its familiar English names Porcelainflower, Wax Plant and Wax Flower.

Fragrance and Drops of Nectar

The flowers of Hoya carnosa are remarkable not only for their appearance.

They are also fragrant.

In many cases, their perfume becomes more noticeable during the evening and at night.

The flowers can also produce small visible drops of nectar, sometimes giving the blossoms an even more jewel-like appearance.

When a large mature plant carries many flower clusters simultaneously, the fragrance can become quite noticeable in the surrounding area.

The combination of scent and nectar is associated with the plant's relationship with its pollinators.

Flowering Spurs That Bloom Again

One particularly interesting feature of Hoya carnosa concerns the structures from which its flower clusters emerge.

The flowers are produced from specialised persistent stalks, or peduncles, often referred to by growers as flowering spurs.

Once flowering has finished and the individual blossoms have fallen, these old flowering stalks should generally not be cut off.

The reason is simple: the plant can produce another cluster of flowers from the same structure during a later flowering period.

Over the years, the same flowering point may therefore be used repeatedly.

This is one of the most useful practical rules when caring for a Wax Plant: do not remove the old flowering spurs simply because the flowers have finished.

Watering and Care

Hoya carnosa is relatively easy to cultivate provided that a few basic mistakes are avoided.

Its fleshy leaves allow it to store water, so it does not require permanently wet soil.

In fact, overwatering is one of the most common causes of problems when growing the plant.

The growing medium should drain efficiently, and it is generally preferable to allow it to dry to some degree between waterings.

When the roots remain continuously surrounded by waterlogged soil, the risk of root rot increases considerably.

A well-established plant usually tolerates a short dry period much better than prolonged excessive moisture.

Light and Flowering

For abundant flowering, the Wax Plant requires plenty of light.

A plant kept in a very dark position may survive and continue producing leaves, but flowering can be greatly reduced.

A bright position with indirect light, filtered sunlight, or gentle morning or late-afternoon sun is generally ideal.

In Cyprus, particular care should be taken with the extremely strong midday sun during summer, especially when the plant is grown in a container. Prolonged exposure to intense heat and direct sunlight can scorch the foliage.

A bright veranda, pergola, sheltered courtyard or partially shaded garden position can provide excellent growing conditions.

Growing Hoya carnosa in Cyprus

The warm climate of Cyprus can allow Hoya carnosa to grow very successfully as an ornamental garden, courtyard, balcony and patio plant.

In warm coastal and lowland areas, it may remain outdoors for much or even all of the year when grown in a sheltered position.

In colder mountainous areas, greater protection may be required during winter.

A mature plant that has found a favourable location can become surprisingly large. Its long stems can be trained over supports, trellises and pergolas or allowed to spread along sheltered walls.

With good light and appropriate care, an established specimen can produce numerous flower clusters during the flowering season.

Propagation

The Wax Plant can be propagated relatively easily from stem cuttings.

A healthy section of stem containing suitable nodes can develop new roots when placed in an appropriate growing medium and maintained under favourable moisture and temperature conditions.

This ease of propagation has contributed greatly to the popularity of the plant.

Many old specimens growing today in gardens, balconies and homes originated from cuttings exchanged between relatives, friends or neighbours.

In this way, one original plant can effectively continue through its propagated descendants for many decades.

A Plant That Can Live for Decades

One of the qualities that makes Hoya carnosa especially rewarding is its longevity.

With appropriate care, a plant can survive for many years and potentially for several decades.

Older specimens can develop very long stems and numerous established flowering points.

During favourable flowering periods, they may become covered with dozens of rounded flower clusters, transforming an otherwise simple climbing plant into a spectacular display.

This longevity also explains why an old Wax Plant can acquire considerable sentimental value.

A plant propagated from a cutting may be passed from one generation to another, becoming associated with a particular family, house, courtyard or garden for many years.

A Small Wonder of Plant Architecture

Some flowers impress us through their enormous size, while others attract attention through brilliant colours.

Hoya carnosa fascinates through something different: the extraordinary precision of its floral architecture.

Each tiny blossom resembles two stars placed one above the other. Its symmetry, waxy appearance, subtle colours, fragrance and tiny drops of nectar combine to create one of the most distinctive flowers found among commonly cultivated ornamental plants.

When dozens of these miniature stars are gathered together into a rounded flower cluster, it becomes easy to understand why the species became known as the Porcelainflower.

In Cypriot gardens, courtyards and balconies, the Wax Plant combines beauty with resilience and longevity. A plant that may remain in the same home for decades can return year after year with clusters of remarkable star-shaped flowers, each looking as though it has been carefully fashioned from wax or porcelain.

Moksia or Myxa – the tree associated with the deaths of millions of birds in Cyprus, as its ripe fruits were traditionally used to make the well-known verka or Limesticks for trapping mainly ambelopoulia.

The verka are placed on shrubs and trees, and when birds land on them, they become stuck to the adhesive substance covering the sticks and are trapped. This method had been used in Cyprus since ancient times.

Today, the capture of birds using verka is prohibited.

It is not only ambelopoulia that fall victim to illegal trapping with limesticks. 153 species of the Cypriot avifauna have been recorded as victims of this brutal method, around half of which are considered threatened, while some are extremely rare species.

Even large birds of prey can become trapped when attempting to catch small birds already stuck on the limesticks.

The method used by some poachers to kill birds removed from the limesticks while they are still alive is criminal and disgusting: they bite the birds on the neck, causing it to break.

Assyrian Plum – Cordia myxa L. – Myxia or Myxa: A Distinctive Tree with Sticky Fruits

Cordia myxa L., commonly known in English as the Assyrian Plum or Sepistan, and in Cyprus as Myxia or Myxa, is a distinctive fruit-bearing tree belonging to the family Boraginaceae. It is particularly notable for its fleshy fruits, which develop a characteristic mucilaginous and highly sticky texture when fully ripe.

The species was scientifically described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753 and is today accepted as a valid species within the genus Cordia.

Its natural distribution lies in warm regions of Asia, extending from southern Iran through the Indian subcontinent and into parts of Southeast Asia. Through cultivation and human movement, however, the species has also been introduced to and grown in other warm and Mediterranean-climate regions.

Growth Form and General Appearance

Cordia myxa is generally a deciduous or semi-deciduous tree, depending on climate and local growing conditions.

It can reach approximately 6–12 metres in height, although its final size depends on soil, water availability and temperature.

The trunk can become relatively thick and may branch fairly low, producing a broad and irregular crown.

On older trees, the bark becomes greyish-brown and develops a rougher texture.

Young branches are thinner and more flexible, while a well-developed tree can produce a dense and shady canopy.

The Leaves

The leaves of Cordia myxa are relatively large, simple and broad.

They are usually ovate to elliptical in shape and may reach several centimetres in length.

The surface can feel slightly rough to the touch, while the veins are clearly visible.

During active growth, the leaves are generally green to deep green.

Because of its dense foliage, the tree has also been used in some regions as a shade tree around houses, courtyards and agricultural areas.

Flowering

The flowers of the Assyrian Plum are small and relatively inconspicuous compared with its fruits.

They are borne in clusters and are generally white to off-white in colour.

As with many fruit-bearing trees, the flowers attract insects that contribute to pollination.

Following successful pollination, the fruits begin to develop. They are initially green and gradually change colour as they mature.

The Characteristic Fruit

The fruit is the most distinctive feature of Cordia myxa.

It is a small, fleshy fruit, roughly round to oval in shape, and is green when immature.

As it ripens, it may turn yellowish, brownish or yellow-brown.

The flesh develops a particularly mucilaginous, viscous and sticky texture.

This characteristic is so striking that it is probably connected with the Cypriot names Myxa and Myxia.

Inside the fruit is a harder central structure containing the seeds.

The Traditional Cypriot Use of the Fruit

People in the Cypriot countryside were historically very familiar with the strongly adhesive nature of the ripe fruits of Cordia myxa.

Their mucilaginous flesh was traditionally used as a raw material in the preparation of the sticky substance associated with the well-known verka or limesticks.

This use forms part of the old ethnobotanical and folkloric history of Cyprus.

Today, this particular use of the plant is mainly of historical interest, as the use of limesticks for trapping wild birds is prohibited.

The connection between Cordia myxa and this old rural practice is nevertheless an interesting example of how closely previous generations understood and used the natural properties of the plants around them.

Other Traditional Uses

In regions where Cordia myxa occurs naturally, the tree has been used for many different purposes.

The ripe fruits are edible and in some countries are eaten fresh or used in traditional food preparations.

Their mucilaginous flesh has also been used in various traditional practical and medicinal applications.

The bark, leaves and other parts of the plant have similarly been used in traditional herbal medicine in several parts of Asia.

It is important, however, to distinguish between traditional use and scientifically proven medicinal effectiveness. The existence of a long-standing traditional use does not automatically mean that every claimed therapeutic effect has been clinically demonstrated.

Cultivation and Tolerance

Cordia myxa prefers warm climates and grows well in regions with abundant sunshine.

Once established, it can tolerate relatively dry conditions, although better growth is generally achieved where water is available during the active growing season.

The tree can grow in a variety of soils, provided drainage is adequate.

High temperatures are usually not a problem, while prolonged severe frost can damage the plant.

For this reason, it performs best in warm lowland and coastal environments.

Its Presence in Cyprus

Cordia myxa is not considered part of the original native flora of Cyprus.

Its presence on the island is associated with long-term cultivation and human use.

Old trees may still occasionally be encountered in courtyards, former agricultural areas and close to settlements, surviving as remnants of a period when the species had greater practical importance in rural life.

Today, it is far less familiar than other traditional trees of Cyprus such as the carob, olive or fig.

Nevertheless, its historical presence is especially interesting because of its connection with a very specific aspect of traditional Cypriot ethnobotanical knowledge.

A Forgotten Tree of the Old Cypriot Countryside

Myxia is a tree that many younger Cypriots may no longer recognise.

It never acquired the major economic importance of the olive or carob tree.

Nor did it become as widespread in traditional gardens as the fig tree.

Yet the unusual sticky nature of its ripe fruits once made it particularly familiar in certain parts of the Cypriot countryside.

The story of Cordia myxa therefore represents a small but fascinating chapter in the ethnobotanical history of Cyprus.

It recalls a time when people knew not only the names of the trees surrounding them, but also the particular qualities of each fruit, leaf, type of wood and plant secretion.

Today, Cordia myxa deserves to be remembered not only because of the historical use of its fruits, but also as a distinctive tree with its own botanical history and a particular place in traditional Cypriot rural life.
