Myrtus
- Myrtus communis L. · Species

The Myrtaceae, commonly known as the myrtle family, belongs to the order Myrtales. It is a large family of flowering plants consisting mainly of evergreen trees and shrubs with aromatic leaves.
Globally, the family comprises approximately 130 genera and more than 5,600 species. It reaches its greatest diversity in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in Australia, Southeast Asia and tropical America. The family includes such well-known genera as Eucalyptus, Syzygium, Eugenia, Melaleuca, Callistemon and Myrtus.
According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the family Myrtaceae is represented on the island by 1 genus and 1 taxon. This is the native non-endemic species Myrtus communis. No endemic, alien or naturalized taxa, hybrids or taxa of uncertain status are recorded.
Morphology
Members of the Myrtaceae are mainly evergreen trees and shrubs. They are usually characterized by the presence of essential-oil glands in their leaves, young shoots and other plant parts. These glands are often visible as minute translucent dots when a leaf is held against the light.
The leaves are simple, usually entire, leathery and without stipules. They may be opposite or alternate, depending on the genus. In Myrtus communis they are opposite, ovate to lanceolate, glossy, dark green and strongly aromatic when crushed.
The flowers are generally radially symmetrical and bisexual. They possess four or five sepals, an equal number of petals and numerous, often particularly conspicuous stamens. The ovary may be superior or inferior, depending on the evolutionary group.
The fruits display considerable morphological diversity. They may be fleshy berries, as in myrtle, or dry capsules, as in many eucalyptus species. Myrtle fruits are nearly spherical or ovoid berries that usually become blue-black to black when mature.
Distribution and habitats
The Myrtaceae has a broad worldwide distribution, with a particularly strong presence in the warm regions of the Southern Hemisphere. Many of its genera are dominant components of the forests, shrublands and savannas of Australia and tropical America.
Myrtus communis is native to a broad region extending from Macaronesia and the Mediterranean to western and southern Asia. Cyprus is included within the natural geographical range of the species.
In Cyprus, myrtle occurs in shrublands, maquis vegetation, forest margins, slopes, ravines, stream banks and other sites with relatively high soil moisture. It may also occur near springs, irrigation channels, traditional cultivated land and inhabited areas.
It is adapted to the Mediterranean climate and can withstand summer drought, although it grows best in places where more moisture is available. It occurs from coastal and lowland areas to the island’s semi-mountainous zones.
Native non-endemic taxa
Myrtus
- Myrtus communis L. · Species
Myrtus communis, commonly known as common myrtle, is an evergreen, densely branched and aromatic shrub or small tree. It usually reaches a height of 1–5 metres, although it may grow taller under favourable conditions.
Its leaves are opposite, simple, entire, leathery and glossy. They contain numerous essential-oil glands and release a characteristic fragrance when crushed.
The flowers are white, generally solitary in the leaf axils, with five petals and numerous long stamens. Flowering occurs mainly from late spring to summer, depending on elevation, local conditions and water availability.
The fruit is a fleshy berry containing several seeds. When mature, it usually becomes dark blue, purplish-black or black. The fruits are eaten by birds and other animals, which contribute to seed dispersal.
Endemic taxa
No endemic taxa of the family Myrtaceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Alien or naturalized taxa
No alien or naturalized taxa of the family Myrtaceae are recorded in the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus.
Hybrids
No hybrids of the family Myrtaceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Taxa of uncertain status
No taxa of uncertain status belonging to the family Myrtaceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Ecological importance
Myrtle is an important component of Mediterranean shrub vegetation. Its dense crown provides shelter and nesting sites for small birds, while its flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects.
Its fleshy fruits provide food for many bird species, which carry the seeds to new locations. In this way, the species actively participates in the ecological networks of Mediterranean ecosystems.
The dense root system of myrtle contributes to soil stabilization, particularly on slopes, stream banks and other sites susceptible to erosion. Following limited disturbance, it can resprout from its base, a characteristic that helps it survive under Mediterranean environmental conditions.
Uses and cultural importance
Myrtle has been known since antiquity and is associated with the history, mythology and traditions of Mediterranean peoples. Its aromatic branches and leaves were used in wreaths, ceremonies and festive decorations.
Its leaves and fruits contain aromatic substances and have been used in traditional herbal practices, perfumery and the preparation of local products. The fruits may also be used in the production of beverages, sweets and aromatic preparations.
The use of any wild plant for medicinal purposes requires reliable identification and appropriate scientific or medical guidance.
Threats and protection
Myrtus communis has a broad geographical distribution and is not generally regarded as a rare species. Its local populations in Cyprus may, however, be affected by habitat destruction and fragmentation, excessively frequent fires, clearance of natural vegetation, engineering works in stream channels and excessive cutting of branches.
Protecting shrublands, riparian habitats and natural sites where myrtle grows contributes to the conservation of the species and the biodiversity it supports. Plant material should be collected responsibly and only where collection is permitted.
