Ficus
- Ficus carica L. · Species
Morus
- Morus alba L. · Species
- Morus nigra L. · Species

Text by George Konstantinou
The Moraceae, commonly known as the fig and mulberry family, belongs to the order Rosales. It consists mainly of trees and shrubs and reaches its greatest diversity in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world.
Globally, the family comprises approximately 48 genera and 1,100 species. Its largest and best-known genera include Ficus, Artocarpus, Dorstenia and Morus. The genus Ficus is particularly diverse and contains hundreds of species.
According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, the family Moraceae is represented on the island by 2 genera and 3 taxa. Of these, 1 taxon is native non-endemic and 2 taxa are alien or naturalized. No endemic taxa, hybrids or taxa of uncertain status are recorded.
Morphology
Members of the family are mainly deciduous or evergreen trees and shrubs and, less frequently, herbs or climbing plants. Many contain milky latex produced in specialized secretory cells and ducts.
The leaves are generally simple and alternate, although they may be opposite in some species. The leaf blade may be entire, toothed or lobed. Stipules are usually present and often leave characteristic scars on the shoots after falling.
The flowers are small, usually unisexual and without conspicuous petals. Male and female flowers may occur on the same plant or on separate plants. They are arranged in dense inflorescences that frequently participate in the formation of compound fruiting structures.
In the genus Ficus, the flowers occur inside a fleshy, hollow receptacle known as a syconium. This structure forms the familiar fig. In the genus Morus, numerous small flowers form dense inflorescences that develop into the compound mulberry fruit.
Distribution and habitats
The Moraceae has a worldwide distribution but reaches its highest diversity in tropical and subtropical regions. Its members occur in tropical forests, dry forests, shrublands, rocky habitats, riparian areas and human-influenced environments.
In Cyprus, the common fig, Ficus carica, occurs both as a cultivated and as a wild or semi-wild plant. It may grow on rocky slopes, in ravines, rock crevices, old walls, abandoned cultivated land, along streams and near inhabited areas.
The mulberries Morus alba and Morus nigra were introduced into Cyprus for cultivation. They are planted for their edible fruits and shade and, particularly in the case of the white mulberry, for the leaves formerly used in silkworm rearing. In some areas they can survive for long periods without cultivation or occur away from their original planting sites.
Native non-endemic taxa
Ficus
- Ficus carica L. · Species
Ficus carica, commonly known as the common fig, is a deciduous tree or large shrub with milky latex and large, rough, usually palmately lobed leaves. Its flowers are concealed inside the syconium. Its fleshy fruiting structures are the familiar edible figs.
Endemic taxa
No endemic taxa of the family Moraceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Alien or naturalized taxa
Morus
- Morus alba L. · Species
Morus alba, commonly known as the white mulberry, is a deciduous tree of Asian origin. Its leaves are highly variable in shape and may be entire or lobed. The fruits are usually white, pink or purple when mature. The species is historically associated with sericulture because its leaves are the principal food of the silkworm.
- Morus nigra L. · Species
Morus nigra, commonly known as the black mulberry, is a deciduous tree cultivated mainly for its edible fruits. It has broad, rough and usually toothed leaves. The mature fruits are generally dark purple to almost black and have a sweet and acidic flavour.
Hybrids
No hybrids of the family Moraceae are recorded in the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus.
Taxa of uncertain status
No taxa of uncertain status belonging to the family Moraceae are recorded in Cyprus.
Ecological importance
The fleshy fruits of Moraceae species provide an important food source for birds, mammals and other animals, which also contribute to seed dispersal.
The common fig can establish itself in rocky and nutrient-poor habitats, where it provides food, shade and shelter for numerous organisms. Mulberry trees are also an important food source for wildlife, particularly during the fruit-ripening period.
Globally, the specialized pollination relationship between species of Ficus and fig wasps is particularly well known. Many fig species are pollinated by particular species of minute wasps, forming one of the most characteristic examples of mutual evolutionary adaptation between plants and insects.
Threats and protection
The Moraceae as a whole does not face a single uniform level of threat in Cyprus. Local populations and old trees may be affected by habitat destruction, clearance of natural vegetation, demolition of traditional buildings, alterations to stream channels and abandonment of old cultivated land.
Old fig and mulberry trees possess ecological, historical and cultural value. Their conservation, particularly in traditional agricultural landscapes and old settlements, contributes to the preservation of both local biodiversity and the agricultural heritage of Cyprus.
