Dondice banyulensis.

Nemesignis banyulensis (Portmann & Sandmeier, 1960).

Dondice banyulensis Portmann & Sandmeier, 1960

Godiva banyulensis (Portmann & Sandmeier, 1960)

και Dondice nicolae Vicente, 1967.

Είναι Alien species στην Κύπρο;

Nemesignis banyulensis (Portmann & Sandmeier, 1960) – A Striking Mediterranean Nudibranch

Nemesignis banyulensis (Portmann & Sandmeier, 1960) is one of the most striking aeolid nudibranchs of the Mediterranean Sea. With its elongated body, numerous flame-like cerata and characteristic white longitudinal lines, it is a highly distinctive species when encountered on rocky substrates and among colonies of hydroids.

It belongs to the family Myrrhinidae and is currently the only accepted species in the genus Nemesignis.

Its taxonomic history is particularly interesting, because for many years it was widely known under the name Dondice banyulensis before being transferred to a newly established genus.

A Distinctive Aeolid Nudibranch

The body of Nemesignis banyulensis is long and relatively slender and can reach approximately 7 centimetres in length.

At the head are two very long oral tentacles, which are noticeably longer than the rhinophores.

The rhinophores are slender and bear characteristic transverse lamellae. They are important sensory organs that help the animal detect chemical signals in the surrounding marine environment.

Along the back are numerous groups of elongated cerata, the finger-like projections that are one of the most characteristic features of aeolid nudibranchs.

In this species, the cerata are arranged in groups along both sides of the body and are often orange, reddish or brownish in colour.

The Characteristic White Lines

One of the most useful identification features is the pattern of strong white longitudinal lines running along the body.

A median white line extends from the posterior part of the body towards the head, passes between the rhinophores and continues towards the oral tentacles.

Two additional lateral white lines are also present lower on the body.

Together with the long oral tentacles and orange-coloured cerata, these white markings give the animal a very elegant and recognisable appearance.

Colouration

Colour can vary between individuals.

The body may appear transparent, whitish, yellowish or orange, while the cerata often become deeper orange or reddish towards their tips.

Because much of the body is translucent, parts of the digestive gland running through the cerata can often be seen.

The bright white lines contrast strongly with the surrounding body colour and are among the best field characters for recognising the species.

Habitat and Distribution

Nemesignis banyulensis is a species of the Mediterranean Sea, with records also extending into nearby areas of the eastern Atlantic.

It is found mainly on rocky underwater habitats where colonies of hydroids and other sessile invertebrates are present.

It can occur from relatively shallow water to greater depths where suitable prey is available.

Its presence is often more closely related to the distribution of its food than to one particular type of seabed.

Diet

Like many aeolid nudibranchs, Nemesignis banyulensis is carnivorous.

It feeds mainly on hydroids, colonial relatives of jellyfish that grow on rocks, algae and other hard underwater surfaces.

This feeding relationship explains why the nudibranch is often found directly on or very close to hydroid colonies.

These colonies provide both a food source and the small-scale habitat through which the animal moves while feeding.

The Cerata and Defence

The cerata are not simply decorative structures.

They play important roles in digestion, gas exchange and defence.

In many aeolid nudibranchs, stinging cells obtained from hydroid prey can pass through the digestive system without being discharged and are then stored in specialised structures at the tips of the cerata.

In this way, the nudibranch can effectively make use of part of the defensive equipment of its prey.

This ability is one of the most remarkable adaptations found among aeolid nudibranchs.

Reproduction

Like most nudibranchs, Nemesignis banyulensis is hermaphroditic.

Each individual possesses both male and female reproductive organs.

During mating, two individuals exchange reproductive material, after which each may lay eggs.

The eggs are deposited in characteristic gelatinous ribbons or coiled masses attached to the substrate, often close to the habitats where the adults feed.

After hatching, the larvae pass through a planktonic stage before eventually settling onto the seabed and developing into juvenile nudibranchs.

Taxonomic History

The species was originally described in 1960 by Portmann and Sandmeier under the name:

Dondice banyulensis.

For decades, this was the name most commonly used in books, identification guides and diving literature.

In 2021, later taxonomic work resulted in the establishment of a new genus for the species.

The name Nemesis was initially proposed, but it was subsequently recognised that this generic name was already occupied by a genus of copepod crustaceans established in 1826.

Under the rules of zoological nomenclature, the newer use of the name could not be retained.

A replacement genus name, Nemesignis, was therefore introduced.

The currently accepted scientific name is:

Nemesignis banyulensis (Portmann & Sandmeier, 1960).

Earlier Scientific Names

Older literature may refer to the same species under several different names.

Important synonyms include:

Dondice banyulensis Portmann & Sandmeier, 1960

Godiva banyulensis (Portmann & Sandmeier, 1960)

and Dondice nicolae Vicente, 1967.

This is important when searching older scientific papers, diving records or photographic archives, because many observations still appear under the former name Dondice banyulensis.

Is It an Alien Species in Cyprus?

There is no reason to classify Nemesignis banyulensis as an Alien species in Cyprus simply because it may be uncommon or newly recorded.

Its natural distribution includes the Mediterranean Sea.

A record from Cypriot waters is therefore geographically compatible with the natural Mediterranean range of the species.

For a species to be considered Alien, there must be evidence that it reached an area outside its natural range through direct or indirect human activity.

At present, I am not aware of evidence supporting such a classification for Nemesignis banyulensis in Cyprus.

Ecological Role

Small nudibranchs may appear insignificant within the immense marine environment, but they are important components of coastal food webs.

Nemesignis banyulensis acts as a predator of hydroids, influencing small colonial invertebrate communities on rocky substrates.

At the same time, it forms part of the food web itself.

The presence of such specialised predators demonstrates how complex life can be within only a few square centimetres of a Mediterranean rocky reef.

A hydroid colony may look to a diver like a small underwater bush.

For Nemesignis banyulensis, however, it represents an entire world: food, habitat, feeding ground and part of the ecological system upon which its survival depends.

A Small Jewel of the Mediterranean

Nemesignis banyulensis is another remarkable example of the extraordinary diversity of Mediterranean nudibranchs.

It has no shell.

It is not fast.

It does not possess large jaws or any obvious defensive weapon.

Yet through millions of years of evolution it has developed a highly specialised way of life.

It locates and consumes colonial hydroids.

It can retain defensive structures obtained from its prey.

Its back is covered with numerous colourful cerata.

And within a world of rocks, algae and tiny invertebrates, it functions as an exceptionally specialised marine predator.

Although Nemesignis banyulensis is small in size, its natural history reveals the remarkable complexity and evolutionary ingenuity of life in the Mediterranean Sea.

Common Pandora – Pagellus erythrinus (Linnaeus, 1758): One of the Characteristic Fishes of the Mediterranean

The Common Pandora (Pagellus erythrinus), known in Greek as Lythrini (Λυθρίνι), is one of the best-known and most characteristic fishes of the Mediterranean and an important member of the marine fauna of Cyprus. It belongs to the family Sparidae, the same large family that includes the gilthead seabream, dentexes, white seabreams and many other familiar fishes of Mediterranean waters.

The species was scientifically described by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in 1758, in the famous tenth edition of his Systema Naturae. Today, it is widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean and the eastern Atlantic and is also an important species for coastal fisheries.

The body of the Common Pandora is elongated, oval and laterally compressed, displaying the characteristic shape of many sparids. The head has a relatively sloping profile, while the mouth is small but equipped with teeth adapted for feeding on a variety of benthic organisms.

One of the species' most distinctive features is its beautiful pink to reddish colouration. The body may display silvery and pink reflections, while the underside is generally paler. Small bluish spots or fine blue markings may also be visible along the sides, particularly in living or freshly caught individuals.

The Common Pandora can exceed 50 centimetres in length, although most individuals encountered are considerably smaller. The largest specimens can reach several kilograms in weight, but medium-sized individuals are much more commonly encountered in coastal fisheries.

It is a benthopelagic species, meaning that it lives and moves close to the seabed without being restricted entirely to the bottom. It occurs over a variety of substrates, showing a particular preference for sandy, muddy and mixed bottoms, as well as areas close to seagrass meadows.

It can be found from relatively shallow coastal waters to depths exceeding 200 metres, although juveniles frequently inhabit shallower areas. Larger individuals tend to move into deeper waters.

In Cyprus, the Common Pandora occurs in the waters surrounding the island and is a familiar species to both professional and recreational fishers. The sandy and mixed seabeds around the Cypriot continental shelf provide suitable feeding and living habitats for the species.

Its diet is varied and consists mainly of small crustaceans, polychaete worms, molluscs and other benthic invertebrates, although small fishes may also be consumed.

Much of its food is located on or within the upper layers of the seabed. Through this feeding behaviour, the Common Pandora participates actively in the complex food webs of coastal and deeper marine ecosystems.

One particularly fascinating aspect of the biology of the Common Pandora concerns its reproductive system. The species exhibits protogynous hermaphroditism. This means that some individuals function initially as females and may later change sex and become males during their lifetime.

This reproductive strategy occurs in a number of marine fishes and represents a remarkable biological adaptation that may contribute to maintaining an effective reproductive balance within populations.

The breeding season varies according to geographical region and water temperature. In the Mediterranean, spawning generally takes place during the warmer part of the year. The eggs are released into the water and are pelagic, as is the case with many other members of the family Sparidae.

Juvenile fish generally develop in relatively shallow areas, which can serve as important nursery grounds before the young fish gradually move into deeper waters as they grow.

The Common Pandora has considerable commercial and culinary importance throughout the Mediterranean. It is caught using longlines, nets, trawls and various other fishing methods and is also a popular target for recreational fishers.

Its flesh is considered to be of excellent quality, and the species is prepared and consumed in numerous ways throughout Mediterranean countries. Its long-standing presence in local fish markets has made it part of the traditional cuisine of many coastal communities.

However, as with many commercially important Mediterranean fish species, intensive fishing pressure can affect its populations. Protecting juvenile fish, complying with fisheries regulations and maintaining healthy marine habitats are important requirements for the long-term sustainability of its stocks.

The Common Pandora is a characteristic inhabitant of Cypriot waters. With its beautiful pinkish colouration, fascinating reproductive biology and important role in both marine ecosystems and traditional fisheries, it represents yet another example of the remarkable biodiversity hidden beneath the surface of the Mediterranean Sea.

“First confirmed record of the white-spotted puffer Arothron hispidus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Mediterranean Sea.”

Πώς έφθασε το Arothron hispidus στην Κύπρο;

White-spotted Puffer – Arothron hispidus (Linnaeus, 1758): The First Confirmed Record of the Species in the Mediterranean Was Made in Cyprus

The White-spotted Puffer (Arothron hispidus), a remarkable tropical pufferfish belonging to the family Tetraodontidae, is one of the unusual alien fish species that have been recorded in the marine waters of Cyprus. The Cypriot record is of particular scientific and historical importance, as it represented the first confirmed record of the species in the entire Mediterranean Sea.

The species was originally described by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in 1758 as Tetraodon hispidus and is today classified as Arothron hispidus (Linnaeus, 1758).

It has an extensive natural distribution throughout the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea. It inhabits warm tropical and subtropical waters and occurs in a variety of coastal habitats, including coral and rocky reefs, lagoons and other shallow marine environments.

The body is thick and oval, with the characteristic appearance of fishes belonging to the family Tetraodontidae. Its colouration is usually greyish, olive or yellowish, while much of the body is covered with numerous small white spots, from which its English common name, White-spotted Puffer, is derived.

White markings around the eyes and in the region of the pectoral fins are also characteristic, while the underside of the body is generally paler.

The species can reach approximately 50 centimetres in total length, although many individuals are considerably smaller.

Like other pufferfishes, Arothron hispidus possesses one of the most remarkable defensive adaptations found among fishes. When threatened, it can rapidly swallow water and greatly inflate its body, dramatically increasing its size and making itself much more difficult for a predator to swallow.

Its teeth are also highly specialised. Four large teeth form a powerful beak, a characteristic feature of the family Tetraodontidae. This structure enables the fish to crush organisms protected by hard shells or external skeletons.

Its diet includes a wide variety of marine organisms, such as molluscs, crustaceans, echinoderms, polychaete worms, sponges and other benthic invertebrates.

Another important characteristic of pufferfishes is the potential presence of the extremely powerful neurotoxin tetrodotoxin in various tissues, particularly the internal organs. For this reason, fishes belonging to this group should not be regarded as safe for human consumption.

The Historic Discovery in Cyprus

On 2 February 2018, Costas Constantinou encountered and photographed an unusual fish in the coastal waters of the Protaras – Cape Greco area, in south-eastern Cyprus.

The fish did not resemble the species normally encountered in Cypriot waters. Costas Constantinou documented the individual with high-resolution photographs and video and subsequently reported his observation so that the fish could be investigated and scientifically identified.

The individual was observed at a depth of approximately 8 metres, over a rocky seabed, and its total length was estimated at approximately 25–30 centimetres. It also had a conspicuous injury on the left anterior side of its body.

The photographic and video documentation obtained by Costas Constantinou enabled the fish to be confidently identified as Arothron hispidus.

It was then that the true importance of the discovery became apparent.

Until that time, there had been no scientifically confirmed record of Arothron hispidus from the Mediterranean Sea.

A fish discovered and photographed in Cypriot waters had therefore proved to represent the first confirmed record of the species in the entire Mediterranean.

The observation was subsequently studied scientifically and published in 2018 in the international scientific journal BioInvasions Records, in a paper entitled:

“First confirmed record of the white-spotted puffer Arothron hispidus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Mediterranean Sea.”

The authors of the scientific publication were Michel Bariche, Costas Constantinou and Nancy Sayar.

It is important to distinguish clearly between the original field discovery and the scientific publication that followed.

Costas Constantinou was the person who first encountered and photographed the fish in Cyprus and subsequently reported its presence. His observation provided the basis for the scientific investigation, confirmation and eventual publication of the first record of the species in the Mediterranean.

This case provides an excellent example of the enormous scientific value of careful observations made in the field. A photograph or video of an unfamiliar or unusual organism, when properly documented and reported to the appropriate specialists, can develop into an important scientific discovery.

How Did Arothron hispidus Reach Cyprus?

Exactly how this particular individual reached Cypriot waters could not be established with certainty.

Because Arothron hispidus occurs naturally in the Red Sea, one possible explanation is that it entered the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal.

For more than a century, the Suez Canal has acted as a marine corridor between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, allowing hundreds of Indo-Pacific organisms to enter the eastern Mediterranean and, in many cases, establish permanent populations.

A second possible explanation considered was the transportation of larvae through ships' ballast water.

The authors of the scientific paper also considered a third possibility: that the individual originated from an aquarium release.

Arothron hispidus occurs in the international marine aquarium trade because of its unusual and attractive appearance. The occurrence of a single relatively large individual in Cyprus, without previous records along the expected route between the Red Sea and Cyprus, meant that deliberate or accidental release from captivity could not be excluded.

However, there was insufficient evidence to establish with certainty how this particular fish entered the Mediterranean.

The significance of the Cypriot discovery increased when, approximately two years later, another Arothron hispidus was recorded in the eastern Mediterranean, this time in Lebanon.

Such observations are particularly valuable for monitoring the arrival and possible spread of non-native marine organisms in the region.

To date, however, there is no evidence demonstrating that Arothron hispidus has established a self-sustaining breeding population in Cyprus. Its occurrence is therefore regarded as casual rather than that of an established alien species.

Cyprus and the Changing Biodiversity of the Mediterranean

The story of Arothron hispidus forms part of a much larger ecological transformation currently taking place in the eastern Mediterranean.

Cyprus' geographical position, relatively close to the Suez Canal and within the warm waters of the eastern Mediterranean basin, makes the island particularly important for monitoring the appearance of new marine species.

During recent decades, numerous species originating from the Red Sea and Indo-Pacific have appeared in Cypriot waters. Some have remained rare visitors, while others have established large and permanent populations.

At the same time, climate change and the increasing temperature of Mediterranean waters are creating increasingly favourable conditions for warm-water species.

Systematic observation of the seas around Cyprus by scientists, naturalists, divers, fishers, underwater photographers and members of the public can therefore provide extremely valuable information.

The case of the White-spotted Puffer demonstrated this particularly well.

A fish observed on the seabed at Cape Greco, photographed and reported by Costas Constantinou, eventually entered the scientific literature as the first confirmed record of Arothron hispidus in the Mediterranean Sea.

It is another small but important chapter in the continuously changing story of the biodiversity of Cyprus and the eastern Mediterranean.

Πώς έφθασε στην Κύπρο;

Orange Gumdrop – Berthellina citrina (Rüppell & Leuckart, 1828): An Alien Marine Gastropod First Recorded in Cyprus in 2019

Berthellina citrina (Rüppell & Leuckart, 1828), commonly known as the Orange Gumdrop, is a small but striking marine gastropod belonging to the family Pleurobranchidae. With its characteristic orange to reddish body and soft, almost translucent appearance, it is one of the interesting alien marine species recorded in the waters of Cyprus in recent years.

Its presence in Cyprus is of particular interest because the species is not considered part of the native Mediterranean fauna. Its natural distribution lies within the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea, and its appearance in the eastern Mediterranean represents another example of the considerable changes taking place in the marine biodiversity of the region.

Berthellina citrina was scientifically described in 1828 by Eduard Rüppell and Friedrich Sigismund Leuckart, originally under the name Pleurobranchus citrinus. It is currently classified within the family Pleurobranchidae, a group of marine gastropods related to the more familiar sea slugs.

Although it is often simply described as a “sea slug”, it is not a typical nudibranch. It belongs to the Pleurobranchida, which are characterised, among other features, by the presence of a gill on the right side of the body beneath the edge of the mantle.

Berthellina citrina is a relatively small animal, usually reaching a length of approximately 3 centimetres. Its body is broad, oval and soft, while its colouration can vary considerably. Individuals may be pale translucent yellow, orange, bright orange-red or even reddish-brown.

The surface of the mantle may bear small white spots or glandular structures. These markings can have taxonomic importance because they may help distinguish the species from similar Mediterranean pleurobranchs.

Two characteristic tubular rhinophores are present on the head. These sensory organs allow the animal to detect chemical signals in the surrounding marine environment.

Despite its externally shell-less appearance, Berthellina citrina retains a very small, reduced internal shell concealed within the tissues of the mantle.

A Nocturnal Animal of the Seabed

Berthellina citrina is primarily a nocturnal benthic species.

During daylight hours it generally remains concealed beneath stones, inside crevices and in other protected places. After sunset, it emerges from its shelter and slowly moves across the seabed in search of food.

Within its natural range, it occurs along rocky shores, reefs, among boulders and in shallow subtidal environments, although records also exist from considerably greater depths.

Its diet consists mainly of sponges, as is the case with many members of the family Pleurobranchidae. Feeding on certain other benthic organisms has also been reported.

Despite its small size and apparently vulnerable soft body, the Orange Gumdrop possesses an effective chemical defence mechanism.

When disturbed, glands in the mantle can release a whitish, acidic and distasteful secretion, which helps deter potential predators.

Such chemical protection is particularly valuable to a soft-bodied animal that lacks the strong external shell possessed by most familiar marine snails.

Like many other heterobranch gastropods, Berthellina citrina is hermaphroditic, with each individual possessing both male and female reproductive organs. Its eggs are deposited in characteristic gelatinous ribbons, which are often orange in colour.

The Appearance of Berthellina citrina in the Mediterranean

For many years there was considerable uncertainty concerning the presence of Berthellina citrina in the Mediterranean.

Earlier reports were questioned because the species can easily be confused with similar native Mediterranean gastropods, particularly Berthellina edwardsii and Berthella aurantiaca.

External appearance alone is therefore not always sufficient for reliable identification.

In 2018, however, morphological and molecular analyses of specimens from Turkey convincingly confirmed the presence of true Berthellina citrina in the Mediterranean.

This confirmation opened a new chapter in monitoring the distribution of the species throughout the eastern Mediterranean.

The First Published Record from Cyprus in 2019

In 2019, Berthellina citrina was scientifically recorded from Cyprus.

The published scientific record concerns an individual observed on 19 July 2019 in the Cape Greco Marine Protected Area, in south-eastern Cyprus.

The animal was observed crawling over hard substrate at a depth of approximately 12 metres, where the water temperature was about 25°C.

The observation was subsequently published in 2020 in the scientific journal Mediterranean Marine Science, as part of the paper New Alien Mediterranean Biodiversity Records (March 2020). The Cyprus record was presented by Periklis Kleitou and Fabio Crocetta.

The photograph accompanying the Cyprus record in the scientific publication is credited to Sakis Lazarides.

This distinction is important when discussing a “first record”: the Cape Greco observation of 19 July 2019 is the first record from Cyprus documented in the scientific literature identified during the review of the available evidence.

The Underwater Record by Costas Constantinou at Protaras

During the same month, July 2019, Berthellina citrina was also photographed underwater in the Protaras area by Costas Constantinou.

The individual was observed at a depth of approximately 15 metres, and the underwater photographs taken by Costas Constantinou provide valuable documentation of the presence of this alien gastropod in Cypriot waters during the very period in which the species was first being recorded from the island.

These photographs therefore represent one of the very early documented observations of Berthellina citrina in Cyprus.

The exact chronology is important. Without an exact date for the Protaras photographs demonstrating that they were taken before 19 July 2019, it would not be scientifically safe to describe this observation as the first record from Cyprus. It is more accurate to describe it as an important early photographic record from July 2019.

The case once again demonstrates the importance of underwater photography and careful observation by divers in documenting marine biodiversity.

Small organisms such as Berthellina citrina can easily remain unnoticed. An observant diver carrying a camera, however, may document a species that has never previously been reported from an entire country.

How Did It Reach Cyprus?

Berthellina citrina is an Indo-Pacific species that also occurs naturally in the Red Sea.

The most plausible explanation for its presence in Cyprus is dispersal from populations already present in the eastern Mediterranean, following an earlier entry of the species through the region of the Suez Canal.

The Suez Canal represents the principal pathway through which organisms originating in the Red Sea and Indo-Pacific have entered the Mediterranean.

This process, widely known as Lessepsian migration, has profoundly altered the composition of the marine fauna of the eastern Mediterranean.

Because of its geographical position, Cyprus occupies an important location for monitoring these ongoing biological changes.

The scientific work reporting the Cyprus occurrence could not establish the precise means by which the species reached the island. Natural dispersal from neighbouring populations was considered the most plausible explanation.

A Small Animal of Considerable Scientific Interest

At only a few centimetres in length, Berthellina citrina may appear insignificant within the immense marine environment surrounding Cyprus.

Its presence, however, forms part of a much larger ecological story.

The biodiversity of the eastern Mediterranean is undergoing continuous change. New species originating from the Red Sea and Indo-Pacific are appearing throughout the region. Some spread rapidly and establish populations, while others remain uncommon, localised and difficult to detect.

Every properly documented observation therefore adds another piece to the complex puzzle of these ecological changes.

The appearance of the Orange Gumdrop – Berthellina citrina in Cyprus in 2019, together with the early underwater photographic observations made during that period, represents a small but important chapter in the modern history of the island's marine biodiversity.
