Είναι Alien είδος στην Κύπρο;

Sargassum Nudibranch – Scyllaea pelagica Linnaeus, 1758: A Remarkably Camouflaged Ocean Traveller Recorded in Cyprus

Scyllaea pelagica Linnaeus, 1758, commonly known as the Sargassum Nudibranch, is one of the most unusual marine gastropods in the world. Unlike most nudibranchs, which spend their lives crawling over the seabed, Scyllaea pelagica is closely associated with floating algae, particularly species of the genus Sargassum.

This association is so close that almost the entire morphology and colouration of the animal appear adapted to life among floating seaweeds.

The species has a very wide geographical distribution and has been recorded from warm and tropical marine regions in different parts of the world. By living on floating masses of algae, it can be transported over considerable distances by ocean currents.

A Nudibranch Designed to Disappear Among Seaweed

Scyllaea pelagica possesses a highly distinctive body structure.

The body is dorsoventrally flattened and bears two pairs of large, irregular lateral lobes with jagged margins. Delicate branching gill structures occur on the inner surfaces of these lobes.

The rhinophores are surrounded by conspicuous and elaborate sheaths, while the posterior part of the body possesses a characteristic flattened dorsal crest.

Its colouration is generally yellowish, brown, greenish-brown or olive, often accompanied by darker markings and small white spots.

The shape and colour of the animal resemble the Sargassum on which it lives so effectively that it can be extremely difficult to detect, even when it is directly in front of an observer.

It represents an impressive example of cryptic colouration and camouflage in the marine environment.

The species can reach several centimetres in length. Some sources report individuals approaching approximately 10 cm, although smaller specimens are frequently encountered.

Life on Floating Islands

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the biology of Scyllaea pelagica is its unusual lifestyle.

Rather than spending its entire life on the seabed, it is strongly associated with floating seaweeds, particularly Sargassum.

Floating masses of Sargassum function as miniature mobile ecosystems.

Numerous organisms settle upon them, while others use the algae as shelter, feeding habitat, breeding substrate or even as a means of transportation.

Scyllaea pelagica is one of the most specialised inhabitants of these floating communities.

As the seaweed is carried by winds and marine currents, the nudibranch travels with it. In this way, the animal can disperse naturally over considerable distances without actively swimming across those distances itself.

It may also occasionally occur on brown algae that remain attached to the seabed.

What Does It Eat?

Despite its close association with Sargassum, the Sargassum Nudibranch does not simply live there to feed upon the seaweed itself.

Scyllaea pelagica feeds mainly on hydroids growing on the floating algae.

The Sargassum therefore provides several essential resources at the same time: transportation, camouflage, shelter and access to food.

This close ecological relationship is an excellent example of how an animal can become evolutionarily specialised for life within a very particular microhabitat.

It Can Even Swim

If Scyllaea pelagica becomes detached from its floating habitat, it is not completely helpless in open water.

The animal is capable of limited swimming by strongly flexing and undulating its body.

Although it is certainly not an active long-distance swimmer, this ability may help it move through the water and potentially regain contact with floating vegetation.

For an animal that spends much of its life associated with drifting material, even a limited ability to swim can be a valuable adaptation.

Reproduction

Like many other nudibranchs, Scyllaea pelagica is hermaphroditic.

Each individual possesses both male and female reproductive organs, and during mating two individuals can exchange sperm.

The eggs are deposited in gelatinous masses attached to algae, meaning that even reproduction remains closely connected with the floating habitat upon which the species depends.

After hatching, the young pass through a planktonic larval stage. This provides an additional mechanism by which the species can disperse over considerable distances.

The combination of planktonic larvae and adults associated with drifting seaweed helps explain the exceptionally broad geographical distribution attributed to this remarkable nudibranch.

The Record from Cyprus

Of particular interest is the occurrence of Scyllaea pelagica in the waters of Cyprus.

On 27 August 2021, the species was recorded by Costas Constantinou at a depth of approximately 6 metres.

The observation has been presented as the first record of Scyllaea pelagica from Cyprus, adding another fascinating marine gastropod to the documented biodiversity of the island.

The record is especially interesting because of the unusual pelagic ecology of the species.

An animal capable of travelling considerable distances while attached to floating seaweed can appear far from areas where it is more regularly observed.

Such observations are therefore valuable additions to our understanding of the marine biodiversity and biogeography of Cyprus.

They also demonstrate the importance of underwater observation and photography. Small, highly camouflaged organisms can easily remain unnoticed, and photographic documentation by divers and naturalists can provide important information about species that are rarely encountered.

Is Scyllaea pelagica an Alien Species in Cyprus?

Particular caution is required before applying the term Alien species to Scyllaea pelagica in Cyprus.

The species has an exceptionally broad distribution in warm and tropical seas, and its ecology is specifically adapted to natural dispersal on floating algae carried by marine currents.

A first or newly documented record from a geographical area therefore does not automatically mean that the species is alien there.

In biogeography, an Alien species is generally understood as a species occurring outside its natural past or present distribution because of direct or indirect human activity.

This distinction becomes much more complicated in the case of naturally pelagic or rafting organisms capable of travelling very long distances without human assistance.

For this reason, Scyllaea pelagica should not be described here as a confirmed Alien species in Cyprus without specific biogeographical evidence supporting such a classification.

The scientifically safer interpretation is that it is a rarely recorded pelagic species in Cyprus, documented from the island's waters in 2021.

This is an important distinction: a first record is not necessarily evidence of a biological invasion.

A True Traveller of the Sea

Scyllaea pelagica provides a remarkable example of just how different the life of a marine gastropod can be.

It does not necessarily depend upon one particular rock, reef or seagrass meadow for its entire existence.

Its home can travel.

A floating piece of Sargassum can become shelter, hunting ground, breeding substrate and, at the same time, a natural raft capable of carrying the nudibranch across the sea.

The record made by Costas Constantinou in Cyprus on 27 August 2021 is therefore not only an interesting addition to our knowledge of the island's marine fauna. It also reminds us that the world's seas are interconnected ecosystems.

Ocean currents transport organisms, larvae and entire floating biological communities across enormous distances.

Among these travellers is a small marine animal almost perfectly concealed among the brown fronds of its floating home – the Sargassum Nudibranch, Scyllaea pelagica.
