The common prawn of Cyprus

Palaemon serratus is a marine prawn belonging to the family Palaemonidae and is one of the characteristic decapod crustaceans of Mediterranean coastal waters. Its established English common name is Common prawn, while “γαρίδα”, meaning prawn or shrimp, is recorded as its official commercial designation in Cyprus.

The species is native to the Mediterranean and forms a natural part of the marine fauna of Cyprus. It should not be confused with alien prawns that have entered the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal or as a result of human activities.

Taxonomic classification

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Arthropoda
  • Subphylum: Crustacea
  • Class: Malacostraca
  • Order: Decapoda
  • Suborder: Pleocyemata
  • Infraorder: Caridea
  • Family: Palaemonidae
  • Genus: Palaemon
  • Species: Palaemon serratus (Pennant, 1777)

The species was originally described by Thomas Pennant in 1777 as Astacus serratus. The placement of the author’s name and year within parentheses indicates that the species was subsequently transferred to a different genus.

Identification and morphology

Palaemon serratus has an elongated, relatively transparent body marked with brownish, reddish or pink lines and spots. Its translucent coloration provides effective camouflage among rocks, algae and marine vegetation.

Its most characteristic feature is its long, upward-curving rostrum. This usually bears six to seven teeth along its upper margin and four to five along its lower margin. The shape and dentition of the rostrum are important features for distinguishing it from related species of the genus Palaemon.

Like all decapods, it has five pairs of walking legs, as well as long antennae and a well-developed abdomen. Its tail can flex suddenly, allowing the prawn to escape rapidly backwards when threatened. Larger individuals may approach a total length of ten centimetres, with females generally growing larger than males.

Distribution

The natural distribution of Palaemon serratus extends through the north-eastern Atlantic, from the coast of Denmark southwards to Mauritania, as well as throughout the Mediterranean Sea and into the Black Sea.

Its occurrence in Cyprus forms part of the species’ natural Mediterranean distribution. It is therefore a native and not an alien marine organism of the island.

Habitats and behaviour

The common prawn mainly inhabits shallow coastal waters. It occurs along rocky shores, in intertidal pools, in rock crevices, beneath stones, among algae and within seagrass meadows. It may also occur in estuaries and other areas where salinity fluctuates.

It has been recorded from the intertidal zone to depths of approximately 40 metres. During the day it often remains concealed in sheltered places and becomes more active as light levels decrease. Individuals may gather in small groups within rocky cavities.

Diet

Palaemon serratus is an opportunistic omnivore. It feeds on small invertebrates, larvae, small crustaceans, worms, animal material, algae and organic remains found on the seabed.

Through its feeding activity, it contributes to the recycling of organic matter in coastal ecosystems. At the same time, it is an important prey species for many fishes and other marine predators.

Reproduction and life cycle

After mating, the female carries the fertilized eggs beneath her abdomen, attached to the abdominal appendages. Their continuous movement maintains a flow of oxygenated water around the developing eggs.

Microscopic planktonic larvae hatch from the eggs. The larvae pass through a series of developmental stages in the water column before transforming into juvenile prawns and settling on the seabed. The timing of reproduction and seasonal abundance may vary according to temperature and local environmental conditions.

Ecological importance

The common prawn occupies an intermediate position within the coastal food web. It consumes small organisms and organic remains while also serving as prey for fishes belonging to several families.

Its occurrence along rocky shores, in seagrass meadows and in other shallow-water habitats is associated with the functioning of these ecosystems. Protecting coastal habitats benefits not only this species but also many other components of Cyprus’s marine biodiversity.

Threats and protection

At a local level, its populations may be affected by pollution, degradation of coastal habitats, destruction of marine vegetation and excessive collection.

Maintaining clean coastal waters and protecting rocky shores and seagrass meadows are important both for this species and for the wider marine biodiversity of Cyprus.
