Some hundreds of Cyprus donkeys live in a feral state on the Karpasia Peninsula in the Turkish-controlled northern part of Cyprus. They were abandoned there by Greek Cypriot farmers during the Turkish invasion in 1974. In 2008, a group of Greek and Turkish Cypriots organized to save the animals from extinction after several were found shot to death.
Asinus is a subgenus of Equus (single-toed (hooved) grazing animal) that encompasses several subspecies of Equidae commonly known as asses, characterized by long ears, a lean, straight-backed build, lack of a true withers, a coarse mane and tail, and a reputation for considerable toughness and endurance.
The common donkey is the best-known domesticated representative of the subgenus, with both domesticated and feral varieties. Among the wild ass species are several never-domesticated species that live in Asia and Africa.
The Cyprus donkeys is the donkey breed of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. There are two principal strains: a large dark-coloured type with a pale belly, probably of European origin; and a small grey African type which represents about 20% of the total population, which in 2002 was estimated at 2200–2700.

West of the village of Kapedes, for many years man dug the earth to find copper and iron pyrite. The small trains descended into the galleys, filled them with soil and rose to the surface carrying their precious cargo to the ore washing area. By digging into the earth they created a huge amphitheater basin. Over the years it grew bigger and bigger, until the day the tinder stopped beating on the copper. The mine was abandoned by its owner, which was the Hellenic Mining Company (HME).
She left behind a lunar landscape. No landscape restoration. They didn't plant a single tree when they left. A gallery still remains open. But nature undertook to restore what man's greed destroyed. He filled the huge basin with water. He gave her all the colors of the earth, to "match" the landscape. He transformed it into a beautiful lake. This small but impressive red lake of the Kokkinonero mine is located between the villages of Kapedes, Kampia and Analiontas. It is a pyrite mine that was operated in the 1950s by the Hellenic Mining Company (HME).
Δυτικά του χωριού Καπέδες, για πολλά χρόνια ο άνθρωπος έσκαβε τη γη για να βρει χαλκό και σιδηροπυρίτη. Τα μικρά τρένα κατηφόριζαν στις γαλαρίες, τα γέμιζαν με χώμα και ανέβαιναν στην επιφάνεια μεταφέροντας το πολύτιμο φορτίο τους στον χώρο πλύσης των μεταλλευμάτων. Σκάβοντας τη γη δημιούργησαν μια τεράστια αμφιθεατρική λεκάνη. Με τα χρόνια όλο και μεγάλωνε, μέχρι την μέρα που ο κασμάς έπαψε να κτυπά στον χαλκό. Το ορυχείο εγκαταλείφτηκε από τον ιδιοκτήτη του που ήταν η Ελληνική Μεταλλευτική Εταιρεία (ΕΜΕ).
Πίσω της άφησε ένα σεληνιακό τοπίο. Καμιά αποκατάσταση του τοπίου. Ούτε ένα δένtρο δεν φύτεψαν φεύγοντας. Μια γαλαρία μένει ακόμα ανοικτή. Η φύση όμως ανάλαβε να αποκαταστήσει όσα η απληστία του ανθρώπου κατάστρεψε. Την τεράστια λεκάνη την γέμισε με νερό. Της έδωσε όλα τα χρώματα της γης, για να "ταιριάζει" με το τοπίο. Την μεταμόρφωσε σε μια όμορφη λίμνη. Η μικρή αυτή αλλά εντυπωσιακή κόκκινη λίμνη του μεταλλείου Κοκκινόνερο βρίσκεται μεταξύ των χωριών Καπέδες, Καμπιά και Αναλιόντας. Πρόκειται για μεταλλείο πυρίτη που λειτούργησε τη δεκαετία του 1950 από την Ελληνική Μεταλλευτική Εταιρεία (ΕΜΕ).

Σε μια ονειρεμένη τοποθεσία όπου κανείς μπορεί να αγναντέψει ένα από τα ωραιότερα ηλιοβασιλέματα του νησιού επέλεξε να τερματίσει το ταξίδι του το εμπορικό πλοίο EDRO III.
Ήταν αργά το βράδυ της 7ης Οκτωβρίου του 2011 όταν το πλοίο EDRO III που έφερε τη σημαία της Σιέρα Λεόνε και έχοντας πλήρωμα εννέα ναυτών, αναχωρούσε από το λιμάνι της Λεμεσού με προορισμό τη Ρόδο φορτωμένο γυψοσανίδες. Οι ισχυροί όμως άνεμοι σε συνδυασμό με τη θαλασσοταραχή που επικρατούσαν στο νησάκι Γερόνησος, στον Άγιο Γεώργιο Πέγειας, παρέσυραν το πλοίο και το χτύπησαν σε βράχο, αφήνοντας το ακυβέρνητο.
Σήμερα το ναυάγιο βρίσκεται σε μικρή απόσταση από την ακτή της τουριστικής περιοχής της Πάφου και μόλις 200 μέτρα από τις θαλασσινές σπηλιές. Η συγκεκριμένη περιοχή προστατεύεται από το πρόγραμμα Natura 2000.
Αρκετοί είναι οι ντόπιοι και οι ξένοι, κυρίως οι λάτρεις της φωτογραφίας, που προσελκύονται από την ομορφιά του τοπίου και το μεγαλείο της φύσης. Το κουφάρι του πλοίου απλά ήρθε και έδεσε με τον πιο αρμονικό και τέλειο τρόπο με το μαγευτικό αυτό σκηνικό που συνεπαίρνει τον κάθε ταξιδιώτη.

The Sierra Leone-flagged EDRO III ran aground off Pegeia on 8 September 2011 in heavy seas, during a voyage to Rhodes, from Limassol, Cyprus with a cargo of plasterboard. At the time of the accident, the ship had nine crew members - seven Albanians and two Egyptians. The crew were rescued and airlifted to the safety of Paphos by a local British Military helicopter.
