Η φυσική του εξάπλωση περιορίζεται στο νησί και, σύμφωνα με το Plants of the World Online των Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, η Κύπρος αποτελεί τη μοναδική καταγεγραμμένη φυσική περιοχή εξάπλωσής του.

Η σημερινή ταξινομική τοποθέτηση του είδους στο γένος Roemeria ακολουθεί την αποδεκτή ταξινόμηση του Plants of the World Online.

Papaver argemone subsp. meiklei Kadereit

Papaver meiklei (Kadereit) M.V.Agab.

Roemeria meiklei (Kadereit) Banfi, Bartolucci, J.-M.Tison & Galasso.

Η επιστημονική εργασία Supplementary notes to the flora of Cyprus VII αναφέρει το αρχικό meiklii ως λανθασμένη γραφή, ενώ το IPNI καταγράφει επίσης ότι η αρχική δημοσίευση εμφανίστηκε ως «meiklii».

Roemeria meiklei – The Endemic Poppy of Cyprus

Text: George Konstantinou

Roemeria meiklei (Kadereit) Banfi, Bartolucci, J.-M.Tison & Galasso is a particularly interesting annual plant of the family Papaveraceae and is an endemic species of Cyprus. Its natural distribution is restricted to the island and, according to Plants of the World Online of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Cyprus is its only recorded native range.

For many years, the species was known under different scientific names, and for this reason it may appear in older books, scientific publications and websites as Papaver argemone subsp. meiklei or Papaver meiklei. Today, Kew accepts Roemeria meiklei as the valid name.

Scientific Classification

Kingdom: Plantae
Class: Equisetopsida
Subclass: Magnoliidae
Order: Ranunculales
Family: Papaveraceae
Genus: Roemeria
Species: Roemeria meiklei

The current taxonomic placement of the species in the genus Roemeria follows the accepted classification of Plants of the World Online.

History of the Scientific Name

The taxonomic history of the plant is particularly interesting.

In 1986, Kadereit described it as a subspecies under the name:

Papaver argemone subsp. meiklei Kadereit

Later, in 2011, morphological differences from related taxa led to its recognition as a separate species under the name:

Papaver meiklei (Kadereit) M.V.Agab.

The scientific study of the flora of Cyprus explicitly describes it as a local endemic and reports morphological differences as well as different chromosome numbers compared with related taxa.

Following a more recent taxonomic revision, it was transferred to the genus Roemeria, and its currently accepted name is:

Roemeria meiklei (Kadereit) Banfi, Bartolucci, J.-M.Tison & Galasso

An Important Correction in the Spelling

In older sources, the spelling meiklii can also be encountered.

The correct spelling is meiklei.

The scientific publication Supplementary Notes to the Flora of Cyprus VII refers to the original meiklii as an incorrect spelling, while the IPNI also records that the original publication appeared as “meiklii”.

Therefore, meiklei should be used in modern references.

A True Endemic Plant of Cyprus

The endemic status of the species is well documented and is not based simply on older references.

Kew records the natural distribution of Roemeria meiklei exclusively in Cyprus, while the scientific study of the Cypriot flora describes it as a local endemic.

This means that the plant represents a distinctive element of the native flora and plant biodiversity of Cyprus.

The Original Collection

The specimen on which the original description of the taxon was based is of particular interest.

The holotype originates from Cyprus, specifically from Mandria, at an altitude of approximately 4,000 feet. It was collected on 3 May 1962 by the botanist R. D. Meikle, with the collection number Meikle 2836.

The original description of the specimen refers to an erect or prostrate plant with medium-green leaves, deep red petals with a violet basal blotch and blue stigmas.

The Name meiklei

The name meiklei is associated with the British botanist Robert Desmond Meikle, who carried out extensive studies of the flora of Cyprus and collected the specimen on which the description of this particular taxon was based.

The holotype bearing the collection number Meikle 2836, collected by Meikle himself in Cyprus, is documented in the scientific description of the species.

Morphology

Roemeria meiklei is an annual plant. Kew records it as an annual species growing primarily in a subtropical biome.

Its flowers display the characteristic form of related poppies. In Meikle's original material, the petals are described as deep, rich red with a characteristic violet blotch at the base.

The morphology of the capsule and other consistent morphological characteristics contributed to its distinction from related taxa and its recognition as a separate species.

Distribution in Cyprus

The 2011 scientific study records the species as a local endemic of phytogeographical Division 2 of Cyprus.

Documented localities include Prodromos, Agridia and an area near Asinou towards Agios Theodoros. These records cover a considerable altitudinal range, from approximately 500 to 1,350 metres.

Collection sites include field margins, gardens, roadsides and other relatively open habitats.

Importance of the Species to the Flora of Cyprus

Endemic plants are among the most important elements of the natural heritage of a region because their natural distribution is restricted to a particular geographical area.

In the case of Roemeria meiklei, that geographical area is exclusively Cyprus.

The recording, photography and scientific documentation of such plants contribute to our knowledge of the Cypriot flora and to a better understanding of the island's distinctive biodiversity.

Η κυπριακή βοτανική βάση Flora of Cyprus – a dynamic checklist διατηρεί την ποικιλία troodi και την περιλαμβάνει στα ενδημικά φυτά της Κύπρου.

Αντίθετα, τα Plants of the World Online των Βασιλικών Βοτανικών Κήπων του Kew εντάσσουν όλα αυτά τα ονόματα στα συνώνυμα της Orchis anatolica.

Η Flora of Cyprus – a dynamic checklist χρησιμοποιεί την ονομασία Orchis anatolica var. troodi και την περιλαμβάνει στον κατάλογο των ενδημικών φυτών της Κύπρου.

Τα Plants of the World Online

Η Flora of Cyprus – a dynamic checklist εξακολουθεί να περιλαμβάνει την ποικιλία troodi στα ενδημικά taxa της Κύπρου.

The orchid of Troodos

Orchis anatolica var. troodi, also known as Orchis troodi, is a distinctive terrestrial orchid described from Cyprus and closely associated with the Troodos mountain range. The Cypriot botanical database Flora of Cyprus – a dynamic checklist retains the variety troodi and includes it among the endemic plants of Cyprus.

Its taxonomic position, however, is not treated in the same way by all scientific authorities. Some authors consider it a variety or subspecies of the more widely distributed Orchis anatolica, while others recognize it as a separate species under the name Orchis troodi. In contrast, Plants of the World Online of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, place all these names in the synonymy of Orchis anatolica.

For this reason, describing it as “endemic to Cyprus” is correct when referring to the narrowly defined Cypriot taxon Orchis anatolica var. troodi. It does not, however, apply to Orchis anatolica in the broad sense adopted by Kew, which is distributed from the eastern Mediterranean to Iran.

Discovery and scientific description

The plant was described in 1929 by the Swiss botanist and orchid specialist Jany Renz as Orchis anatolica var. troodi. The original description was published in Repertorium Specierum Novarum Regni Vegetabilis.

The epithet troodi is derived from Troodos, the Cypriot mountain range with which the plant was associated in its original description. Its name therefore preserves a direct geographical reference to Cyprus.

In 1932, Renz himself transferred it to subspecies rank under the name Orchis anatolica subsp. troodi. Later, in 1990, the Belgian botanist Pierre Delforge treated it as a separate species and published the combination Orchis troodi (Renz) P.Delforge.

These three names do not represent three different plants. They represent different taxonomic assessments of the same Cypriot plant: as a variety, a subspecies or a separate species.

The origin of the names

The name of the genus Orchis comes from the Ancient Greek word “ὄρχις”, meaning “testicle”. The name refers to the pair of underground tubers characteristic of many species belonging to the genus.

The epithet anatolica refers to Anatolia because Orchis anatolica was described from this broader geographical region.

The epithet troodi refers to Troodos. The Greek name “Orchis i troodia” accurately expresses this geographical association. The English name Troodos orchid is used mainly for the Cypriot form.

Its complex taxonomic position

Orchis anatolica belongs to a group of eastern Mediterranean orchids with morphologically related populations. Differences in size, flower arrangement, the shape of the labellum, the orientation of the spur, flowering time and ecological preferences have led different researchers to different taxonomic conclusions.

Flora of Cyprus – a dynamic checklist uses the name Orchis anatolica var. troodi and includes it in the list of plants endemic to Cyprus. Under this treatment, the variety troodi represents a Cypriot endemic taxon within the wider species Orchis anatolica.

Plants of the World Online follow a broader taxonomic concept. They accept only Orchis anatolica Boiss. as a species and treat the names Orchis anatolica var. troodi, Orchis anatolica subsp. troodi and Orchis troodi as its synonyms.

Under this broad treatment, the Cypriot plant is not recognized as a separate taxon and therefore cannot be characterized independently as endemic. Orchis anatolica in the broad sense is native to Cyprus, the East Aegean Islands, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and Iran.

A correct presentation must therefore state clearly which taxonomic system is being followed. In the context of the flora of Cyprus, the name Orchis anatolica var. troodi and the description “endemic variety of Cyprus” may be used, together with an explanation that Kew currently includes it within the more broadly defined Orchis anatolica.

Reports from Lebanon

In 2017, a paper was published reporting the identification of plants as Orchis troodi in Lebanon. The authors argued that this record removed the exclusively Cypriot status of the taxon.

This publication must be treated with caution. Identifying morphologically related orchids of the Orchis anatolica group is difficult, while the major international taxonomic databases do not currently accept Orchis troodi as a separate species.

Flora of Cyprus – a dynamic checklist continues to include the variety troodi among the endemic taxa of Cyprus. It would therefore be inappropriate to remove the description “endemic” solely because of this particular report from Lebanon. It is nevertheless necessary to explain that its endemic status depends on the taxonomic delimitation being followed.

Morphology

Orchis anatolica var. troodi is a perennial, terrestrial and tuberous orchid. During its active season, it produces an upright flowering stem, while its above-ground parts dry out during summer and the plant survives below the ground.

The stem is upright and hairless, often green near the base and more reddish or purplish towards its upper section. The height of the plant varies according to its age, moisture, exposure to light and the conditions of the locality.

The leaves are concentrated mainly in a basal rosette. They are simple, entire, oblong, ovate to lanceolate and usually green. In plants belonging to the wider Orchis anatolica group, purple or brown markings may occur on the leaves, although their presence and intensity are variable.

The upper leaves are smaller and narrower and partly sheath the stem. The inflorescence is usually relatively lax and bears from a few to several flowers. Its looser arrangement and relatively robust flowers have been used to distinguish the troodi form from typical populations of Orchis anatolica.

The flowers

The flowers range in colour from pale pink and lilac to deeper purple. Their colour may vary between plants, even within the same population. Very pale forms may occur more rarely.

The sepals and petals form the upper part of the flower. The dorsal sepal and petals may converge above the column, while the lateral sepals are more open or raised.

The labellum is three-lobed and usually paler in its central part. It bears purple spots or small papilla-like projections. The central lobe may be larger than the lateral lobes and may have a slight division or notch towards its apex.

A long spur develops behind the flower. The troodi form has been described as more robust than typical Orchis anatolica, with larger flowers, a looser inflorescence and a spur that is often curved upwards.

These characters should not be used in isolation. Reliable distinction requires examination of the entire plant, comparison of several mature flowers and consideration of the habitat, altitude and flowering period.

Differences from typical Orchis anatolica

Typical Orchis anatolica is generally a more slender plant, with a relatively lax inflorescence and leaves that often bear conspicuous purplish-brown markings. Its flowers are pink to purple, and its long spur may be horizontal or raised.

The Cypriot troodi form has been described as more robust, with larger and longer flowers, a generally lax inflorescence and a characteristically curved, often ascending spur. It is also more closely associated with mountainous and woodland habitats on igneous rocks.

Some botanists consider these differences sufficient to recognize an endemic variety, subspecies or even species. Other researchers treat them as part of the natural morphological and ecological variation of Orchis anatolica.

This different assessment of its morphological characters explains why there is no single universally accepted taxonomic treatment.

Habitat

The Troodos orchid grows in open pine woodland, forest clearings, slopes, scrubland and grassy places. It is particularly associated with areas dominated by the Calabrian pine, Pinus brutia, and the endemic golden oak, Quercus alnifolia.

It generally prefers sunny to partly shaded localities, with soil that retains sufficient moisture during the growing season without remaining permanently waterlogged.

It has been reported mainly on igneous rocks and soils of the wider Troodos mountain range. Its association with these substrates is one of the ecological features used to distinguish it from other populations of Orchis anatolica.

Although its name refers to Troodos, the photographs in the present post were taken in Akamas. This indicates that its Cypriot distribution, as recognized in practice, is not restricted exclusively to the central core of the Troodos mountain range.

Altitudinal distribution and flowering

Published sources provide different altitudinal limits, depending on the taxonomic concept and the records included. For the Cypriot form, a broad range of approximately 300–1,550 metres is frequently reported.

Its occurrence from lower to mountainous localities means that the flowering period is not identical throughout its range. It may flower from March at lower and warmer elevations, while flowering may continue through April or even later at colder mountain localities.

The photographs in this post were taken in Akamas on 25 March 2021. This date agrees with its spring flowering period in the lower and warmer parts of Cyprus.

Pollination

Unlike orchids of the genus Ophrys, which primarily employ sexual deception, the flowers of Orchis anatolica and its related forms have a different structure and ecological strategy.

The spur creates the impression that the flower may contain nectar. Insects land on the labellum and insert their proboscis towards the spur. During the visit, the pollinia may become attached to their heads and be transferred to another flower.

A particular pollinator species should not be attributed to the Cypriot variety troodi without direct and reliable scientific evidence. The presence of an insect on a flower does not by itself demonstrate that it is an effective pollinator.

Tubers and the annual cycle

Below the ground, the orchid develops tubers in which nutrients are stored. During the growing season, the reserves of the old tuber are used while a new tuber develops to support the plant during the following year.

After flowering and fruit production, the above-ground parts gradually dry out. During the dry summer period, the plant survives in a dormant state below the ground.

The absence of a flowering stem in a particular year does not necessarily prove that the plant has been lost. Weather conditions, soil moisture and the condition of the tuber can affect its annual appearance and flowering.

Seeds and underground fungi

The fruits are capsules containing a very large number of extremely small seeds. The seeds are dispersed mainly by wind, but only a minute proportion reaches a place where suitable conditions for germination exist.

As in all orchids, the seeds do not possess an adequate reserve of nutrients. To begin developing, they must form an association with compatible mycorrhizal fungi in the soil.

This relationship explains why transplanting wild orchids usually fails. Uprooting not only removes the plant from its habitat but also disrupts the specialized underground ecological relationships on which it depends.

Status as an endemic plant

Under the taxonomic treatment adopted by Flora of Cyprus, Orchis anatolica var. troodi is an endemic variety of Cyprus. This is the appropriate name and description for presenting it within the context of the Cypriot flora.

However, it should not be claimed that Orchis troodi is an undisputed separate endemic species accepted by every international taxonomic authority. Kew currently accepts neither Orchis troodi nor the variety troodi as a separate taxon but includes them within Orchis anatolica.

The scientifically accurate statement is therefore as follows: Orchis anatolica var. troodi is recognized by the current Cypriot database as a variety endemic to Cyprus, while broader international taxonomic treatments include it within the widely distributed Orchis anatolica.

Threats and protection

Populations of wild orchids may be affected by habitat destruction and alteration, road construction, forestry and engineering operations, fires, inappropriate land clearance and the use of chemicals.

Cutting the vegetation before fruiting has been completed prevents the seeds from maturing and dispersing. Repeated disruption of reproduction can affect a small population even when mature plants continue to appear for some time.

The collection or uprooting of plants constitutes a serious threat and serves no useful purpose as a method of transferring them to a garden. Without suitable soil and compatible fungi, their chances of survival are extremely limited.

Photography should be carried out without trampling the rosettes or the ground surrounding flowering plants. Small non-flowering individuals may occur at the same locality and can be difficult to see among the vegetation.

An important element of the Cypriot flora

Orchis anatolica var. troodi is an important element of Cyprus’s natural heritage. It was described from Cyprus, bears the name of Troodos and displays morphological and ecological characteristics that led to its recognition as a distinctive Cypriot taxon.

The taxonomic disagreement does not diminish the importance of protecting its Cypriot populations. On the contrary, it emphasizes the need for detailed morphometric, ecological and genetic research that could clarify their relationship with other populations of Orchis anatolica.

Until complete taxonomic agreement is achieved, the most appropriate presentation is to retain the Cypriot name Orchis anatolica var. troodi, list the synonyms Orchis anatolica subsp. troodi and Orchis troodi, and explain clearly its different treatment by Kew.
