Budak's snake-eyed skink - Ablepharus budaki Αβλέφαρος

Common chameleon or Mediterranean chameleon (Chamaeleo chamaeleon) Χαμαιλέων

Kotschy's gecko - Mediodactylus kotschyi  Μισιαρός

Mediterranean house gecko - Hemidactylus turcicus  Μισιαρός

1)      Budak's snake-eyed skink - Ablepharus budaki Αβλέφαρος 2) Bridled mabuya- Trachylepis vittata  Μαμπούγια η ταινιωτή 3) Common chameleon or Mediterranean chameleon (Chamaeleo chamaeleon) Χαμαιλέων 4) Kotschy's gecko - Mediodactylus kotschyi  Μισιαρός 5) Mediterranean house gecko - Hemidactylus turcicus  Μισιαρός 6) Ocellated skink - Chalcides ocellatus – Βυζάστρα 7) Schneider's skink - Eumeces schneideri - Ευμήκης ο στικτός 8) Schreiber's fringe-fingered lizard - Acanthodactylus schreiberi - Ακανθοδάκτυλος – Αμμόσαυρα 9) Sling Tailed Agama - Stellagama stellio  Κουρκουτάς 10) Snake-eyed lizard - Ophisops elegans – Αλιζαύρα 11) Troodos Lizard - Phoenicolacerta troodica - Σαύρα του Τροόδους.

The Eleven Lizard Species of Cyprus (Web TV) – By George Konstantinou – Politis Newspaper, 21 February 2018

GEORGE KONSTANTINOU, 21 February 2018

Text, photographs and video by George Konstantinou

Lizards are reptiles, and more than 6,000 different species occur throughout the world. They are found everywhere except Antarctica.

Cyprus is home to 22 different reptile species: eight snakes, three turtles and 11 lizards. All 11 lizard species found in our country are entirely harmless to humans. They occur from sea level up to the highest peaks of the Troodos Mountains.

All the lizards of Cyprus are protected under Appendix III of the Bern Convention and by Cypriot legislation.

Heat from the environment

All lizards are active from spring until autumn because reptiles are cold-blooded. This means that they do not maintain their own body temperature in the same way as mammals and birds. Instead, they obtain the heat they require to become active from their environment.

During winter, they enter hibernation. However, because Cyprus has a mild winter, lizards can be encountered even in the middle of the season on sunny days. They can be seen basking on stones and absorbing the warmth of the winter sun.

Lizards are highly beneficial to agriculture because a large part of their diet consists of insects, such as grasshoppers, that cause incalculable damage to humans. Lizards therefore help maintain the balance of nature.

Almost all lizards mate in late spring or early summer and lay their eggs in the middle of summer. The eggs hatch during autumn.

Only the chameleon lays its eggs in autumn, and these hatch during the following spring.

All the lizards found in Cyprus lay white eggs, except for one species that gives birth to live young: the Ocellated Skink, Chalcides ocellatus, known locally as the “Vyzástra”.

The way in which the eggs are deposited varies from one species to another. Some species, including geckos, lay their eggs inside cracks in the ground, holes, beneath stones or under other objects.

Other species, including the Starred Agama and the chameleon, bury their eggs in the ground.

Some species lay hard-shelled eggs similar to those of birds. Other species, including the chameleon and the Starred Agama, produce eggs enclosed only by a membrane, like those of snakes.

The parents do not incubate the eggs as birds do. Instead, the eggs hatch using the heat of the surrounding environment.

After laying the eggs, the mother continues on her way and has no further contact with them or with the young. Following hatching, the young lizards are capable of surviving and feeding independently.

Found only in Cyprus

Several species, including the geckos, Ocellated Skink and Schneider’s Skink, are nocturnal and become active at night, although they can sometimes also be observed during the day.

At night, geckos can be seen hunting near lights that attract flying insects, particularly moths.

Schneider’s Skink is both the largest and the rarest of all the lizards found in Cyprus and can reach a length of up to 50 centimetres.

The Troodos Lizard, Phoenicolacerta troodica, is endemic to Cyprus. This means that it exists only in Cyprus and nowhere else in the world.

It is named after the Troodos Mountains, although it can be found throughout Cyprus.

The chameleon can change colour according to its surroundings for camouflage. It also changes colour when its mood changes.

This is its only defence against predators because it is the slowest lizard found in Cyprus and cannot run quickly.

All lizards feed on insects and spiders. Several species also consume small snails and various plant materials.

Some species feed on other lizards and may also display cannibalism, meaning that they eat members of their own species. The Troodos Lizard is one such example.

When pursued by predators such as snakes, some species—including geckos—can detach their tails to escape.

After the tail is detached, it continues moving and distracts the predator, giving the lizard an opportunity to flee. Almost all lizards possess regenerative abilities, and the lost tail eventually grows again.

Budak’s Snake-eyed Skink and the Ocellated Skink have extremely small, reduced legs, and their movements resemble those of snakes. Consequently, many people who see them mistake them for small snakes and panic.

The enemies faced by lizards include birds of prey, snakes, foxes, hedgehogs, cats and, of course, humans.

Human activities that harm them include pesticide spraying, which reduces the availability of food, and habitat destruction.

People also frequently kill lizards wherever they encounter them because they believe various unfounded myths.

One such myth claims that a chameleon bites people on the nose and that, if it does so, it will release its grip only when a donkey climbs onto an oven—in other words, never. For this reason, the chameleon is also known locally as the “Dakanomouta”, meaning nose-biter.

Another myth claims that Schneider’s Skink and the Ocellated Skink visit livestock enclosures at night and drink milk by suckling sheep and goats. This belief gave rise to the local name “Vyzástra”, meaning sucker.

All these ridiculous myths concern not only lizards but also many other species found in our country. They are passed down from generation to generation, and people genuinely believe them and kill the animals.

In reality, all these myths operate against the biodiversity of our country.
