Black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), Νυχτοκόρακας

Great egret (Ardea alba)  Αργυροτσικνιάς - Χανούμισσα.

Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea).

1)      Black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) Νυχτοκόρακας 2) Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis)  Γελαδάρης - Ερωδιός ο Βουκόλος 3) Great egret (Ardea alba)  Αργυροτσικνιάς – Χανούμισσα 4) Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea).  Σταχτοτσικνιάς 5) Little bittern (Ixobrychus minutus) Μικροτσικνιάς 6) Little Egret (Egretta garzetta)  Λευκοτσικνιάς – Χιονάτη 7) Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea)  Πορφυροτσικνιας 8) Squacco heron (Ardeola ralloides) Κρυπτοτσικνιάς 9) Striated heron (Butorides striata) ) Ερωδιός των μαγκροβίων 10) Great bittern (Botaurus stellaris) Ήταυρος

Little bittern (Ixobrychus minutus) Μικροτσικνιάς.

Little Egret (Egretta garzetta)  Λευκοτσικνιάς - Χιονάτη.

The Ten Heron Species of Cyprus (Web TV) – By George Konstantinou – Politis Newspaper, 1 March 2018

GEORGE KONSTANTINOU, 1 March 2018

Text, photographs and video by George Konstantinou

Approximately 410 bird species, including migratory species, have been recorded in Cyprus, and this number increases every year with new records.

Of these 410 birds, ten are our familiar heron species, which belong to the family Ardeidae. They are migratory birds and are strictly protected under Cypriot legislation.

There are 64 different heron species worldwide, divided among 24 genera. They are cosmopolitan birds found throughout the planet, with the exception of Antarctica and the Arctic.

They are aquatic birds encountered at lakes, rivers, streams, marshes, salt lakes, dams and beaches, and generally wherever water is present.

Herons are carnivorous and feed on fish, amphibians, large insects, invertebrates and even small reptiles and rodents.

Long, tall legs

All herons have long, tall legs that help them walk through shallow water while searching for food. They also possess long necks and large bills, allowing them to strike and seize their prey with lightning-fast movements.

During the breeding season, they nest in trees or tall shrubs, always close to water. Both parents participate in caring for their young.

Of the ten heron species encountered in our country, only four breed in Cyprus:

  • Little Egret – Egretta garzetta – Lefkotsiknias, Chionati
  • Cattle Egret – Bubulcus ibis – Geladaris, Erodios o Voukolos
  • Black-crowned Night Heron – Nycticorax nycticorax – Nychtokorakas
  • Squacco Heron – Ardeola ralloides – Kryptotsiknias

During recent years, the Little Egret has bred successfully in an area at Akrotiri, nesting in tall eucalyptus trees near water.

The Cattle Egret, Squacco Heron and Black-crowned Night Heron have also bred very successfully in recent years at Agios Loukas Lake in occupied Famagusta. The Cattle Egret also breeds at Oroklini Lake.

Late spring

The spectacle presented during the Cattle Egrets’ breeding season, which occurs in late spring at Agios Loukas Lake, is exceptionally impressive. For me, it was one of the most remarkable sights I have ever witnessed.

I spent many hours there photographing and filming the birds. They allowed me to approach quite closely and did not appear to be disturbed by the presence of people.

Dozens of pure-white birds nesting in the trees beside the water, nests filled with insatiable chicks deafening you with their calls, and parents flying tirelessly back and forth while carrying food to their young create a spectacle that is truly extraordinary by Cypriot standards.

The ten heron species encountered in Cyprus

  1. Black-crowned Night Heron – Nycticorax nycticorax – Nychtokorakas
  2. Cattle Egret – Bubulcus ibis – Geladaris, Erodios o Voukolos
  3. Great Egret – Ardea alba – Argyrotsiknias, Chanoumissa
  4. Grey Heron – Ardea cinerea – Stachtotsiknias
  5. Little Bittern – Ixobrychus minutus – Mikrotsiknias
  6. Little Egret – Egretta garzetta – Lefkotsiknias, Chionati
  7. Purple Heron – Ardea purpurea – Porfyrotsiknias
  8. Squacco Heron – Ardeola ralloides – Kryptotsiknias
  9. Striated Heron – Butorides striata – Mangrove Heron
  10. Great Bittern – Botaurus stellaris – Itavros

The Black-crowned Night Heron is a nocturnal bird, hence its local name “Nychtokorakas”, meaning night raven. During the day, it remains concealed among dense vegetation close to water, although it can also be encountered during the late afternoon.

It is grey and is a common species in our country.

The Cattle Egret is a small heron and another common species. It is highly beneficial because a large part of its diet consists of insects harmful to humans, including grasshoppers.

It is called the Cattle Egret because it habitually follows grazing animals closely, feeding on insects and small reptiles disturbed by the animals’ movements and thereby made visible to the birds.

Cattle Egrets can frequently be seen sitting on the backs of animals. It is the only heron in Cyprus that can be observed feeding far away from wetlands. It can be seen in fields, cultivated areas, sewage-treatment areas and even on farms.

At dusk, it always returns to roost in trees near lakes, including Oroklini Lake and Athalassa Lake. It prefers trees standing in the water, where it is better protected from predators.

The Great Egret is a large, white heron and is not particularly common in Cyprus.

The Grey Heron is also a large bird, with greyish-white plumage, and is a relatively common species in our country.

This heron feeds on almost anything it can swallow and can consume prey of an enormous size in relation to its own body, including very large fish, rats and even birds as large as pigeons.

The Little Bittern is the smallest of all the herons. It is almost always found among dense aquatic vegetation, close to the water’s surface, where it remains motionless while waiting for prey.

The Little Egret is a medium-sized heron with pure-white plumage, hence its local name “Chionati”, meaning Snow White.

The Purple Heron is another large heron. Its plumage is grey with intense brown colouring that appears purplish when the bird is in flight.

The Squacco Heron is a medium-sized heron with white and brown plumage. It is unclear why its local name is “Kryptotsiknias”, or hidden heron, because the bird does not usually hide. It can be seen in open areas and can be approached relatively easily.

The Striated Heron is exceptionally rare in Cyprus. It was discovered for the first time by birdwatchers on 28 October 2014, feeding at the Zakaki ponds in Limassol beside the birdwatching hide.

It is not a migratory bird, and it is unknown how it reached Cyprus. Two possible explanations are that it followed other migratory heron species or arrived aboard a ship.

It is a beautiful, small heron whose distribution extends from West Africa to Japan, Australia and South America.

It remained at Zakaki for several days before departing for an unknown destination. During its stay, it fed mainly on small fish and dragonflies, which it caught with lightning-fast movements.

The Great Bittern is a relatively rare bird in Cyprus. It closely resembles the Little Bittern but is twice its size.

It is also usually found among dense aquatic vegetation close to the water’s surface, remaining motionless while waiting for prey. It can sometimes be seen standing perfectly still, like a statue, in open areas.

During the bird-migration season, herons can be seen flying in flocks over the sea close to the coast, offering a magnificent spectacle.
