The Two Geckos of Cyprus
GEORGE KONSTANTINOU, 26/1/2020
Text and photographs by George Konstantinou
In Cyprus we find 22 different species of reptiles, of which 8 are snakes, 3 are turtles and 11 are lizards. All 11 species of lizards found in our country are completely harmless to humans, and we find them from sea level up to the highest peaks of Troodos. All the lizards of Cyprus are protected by the Bern Convention (Appendix III), as well as by Cypriot legislation.
Lizards belong to the reptiles, and throughout the planet there are more than 6,000 different species. They are found throughout the world except Antarctica.
All lizards are active from spring until autumn because all reptiles are cold-blooded, meaning that they do not have their own body temperature, like mammals or birds, and obtain their heat from the environment, which they need in order to be active. During winter they hibernate. In Cyprus, however, because of the mild winter we have, we can encounter lizards even in the heart of winter when the day is sunny, and we can see them basking on rocks, absorbing the warmth of the winter sun.
Two of the 11 lizards of Cyprus belong to the family Gekkonidae and are the geckos known to all of us locally as “misiaroi”. This family includes approximately 950 species around the world in 61 different genera, with most occurring in tropical and subtropical regions. It is estimated that they have existed on the planet for more than 100 million years. They are small, nocturnal species with excellent climbing abilities. These abilities are due to the presence of special suction-like structures on the toes of most species, which allow them to climb even the smoothest surfaces. Species of this family have the ability to produce sounds. Both are small lizards with a body length that does not exceed 10 cm including the tail. The pupils of their eyes are vertical and dilate at night to facilitate their night vision. Like all terrestrial reptiles, geckos regularly shed their skin in order to grow.
Geckos are nocturnal species and are active at night, although sometimes we can also see them during the day. We can see geckos hunting at night near lights, which attract flying insects, mainly moths.
Geckos lay eggs with shells, just like birds, while other species such as the chameleon and the agama do not lay eggs with shells, but only with a membrane, like snakes. The eggs are not incubated by the parents as in birds, but hatch through the temperature of the environment. After laying the eggs, the mother continues on her way and has no further contact with the eggs or the young. After hatching, the young are capable of surviving and feeding on their own. Geckos lay their eggs in rock crevices, beneath stones and other objects, inside holes and generally wherever they consider to be a safe place for their eggs. They usually lay up to two white eggs, which hatch approximately one month after being laid. Reproduction takes place during spring and summer.
When geckos are pursued by predators, they can detach their tails in order to escape. Specifically, they detach their tail and, although severed, the tail continues to move, distracting the predator and giving the lizard the opportunity to escape. Geckos, as well as several other species of lizards, have the ability to regenerate, and their severed tail grows back.
The two species of geckos found in Cyprus are:
- Kotschy's gecko – Mediodactylus kotschyi (Steindachner, 1870) – Samiamidi, Misiaros.
- Mediterranean house gecko – Hemidactylus turcicus (Linnaeus, 1758) – Samiamidi, Misiaros.
House geckos are usually found in houses, ruins of old houses and dry-stone walls, as well as in natural areas with rocks, stones and tree trunks where they can find shelter during the day. They prefer low-altitude areas and are mainly found in houses and human structures, hence the name “House gecko”. They occur from the coastal areas up to the highest peaks of Troodos. Their body colour varies from pale yellow to pink. Dark spots appear on the surface of the back, while the body is semi-transparent, especially around the belly, to the point that when a female is carrying eggs, they can be seen. Apart from Cyprus, they are found in southern Europe, North Africa, Asia Minor, the Middle East and on Mediterranean islands.
Kotschy's geckos are found in dry, rocky areas where they can find shelter during the day, in house ruins, dry-stone walls, walls and piles of stones and wood. Although they are mainly active at night, they can also be encountered during the day. They are also found throughout the island, from the coastal areas up to the highest peaks of Troodos. Their bodies are grey, while dark “V”-shaped markings can be seen on their backs. Apart from Cyprus, they are found in Italy, the Balkans, Ukraine, Turkey and the Middle East.
Geckos, as well as all lizards, are very beneficial to agriculture, as a large part of their diet consists of insects that cause incalculable damage to humans, such as moths, and they help maintain the balance of nature.
The enemies faced by geckos and lizards in general include birds of prey, snakes, foxes, hedgehogs, cats and, of course, humans through various actions such as spraying, which results in a lack of food for these animals, as well as the destruction of habitats. People also usually kill them wherever they see them because of unjustified fears and ignorance.
