The Three Species of Turtles Found in Cyprus – By George Konstantinou – Politis Newspaper, 30 May 2018

In Cyprus, we encounter 22 different species of reptiles, of which 11 species are lizards, two are sea turtles, one is a freshwater turtle and eight are snakes.

On our planet, there are 365 species of turtles, which are found on every continent, and their presence on Earth dates back 250 million years.

Turtles are divided into three categories: sea turtles, land tortoises and freshwater turtles, or terrapins.

Seven species of sea turtles occur in the world’s oceans. Two of these species are also found and breed in Cyprus. These are the Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta).

The Green Sea Turtle is a large turtle that reaches a length of 110 centimetres. It can also weigh up to 160 kilograms and live for more than 80 years. It is an omnivorous turtle that feeds mainly on marine plants, although when young it also consumes other marine animal species. It can lay more than 100 eggs.

The Loggerhead is also a large turtle, although it is smaller than the Green Sea Turtle, with a length of approximately 80 centimetres. Loggerheads can lay more than 70 eggs. The Loggerhead population is in a much better condition than the population of the Green Sea Turtle.

Both species lay their eggs in holes that they dig in the sand themselves. After laying the eggs, they cover them with sand. Incubation lasts almost two months. The egg-laying process takes a considerable amount of time and always occurs at night. During the breeding season, both species lay eggs several times and always on the same beach where they themselves were born.

Like all sea turtles, they travel extremely long distances across the oceans in search of food and to reach their breeding grounds. They are found throughout the tropical and subtropical oceans of the world. Their breeding season in Cyprus begins in June on several sandy beaches around our island.

Marine vessels

The enemies and threats faced by sea turtles include collisions with marine vessels and entanglement in fishing nets and longlines, in which they become trapped and die from suffocation. Another threat is the deliberate killing of turtles by fishermen because the animals damage their nets.

In several countries—but fortunately not in Cyprus—people collect turtle eggs for food. Turtles also suffer serious disturbance on their nesting beaches at night, as many tourists and local people go there to watch them laying their eggs. This causes severe disturbance and forces many frightened turtles to return to the sea without laying.

Artificial lights create a major problem for newly hatched turtles because they become disoriented. Instead of heading towards the sea, they move in other directions by following the lights. On one occasion in Argaka, hatchlings left the beach by following the lights of a seaside restaurant and reached the main road. People collected them and returned them to the sea, but the hatchlings came out of the water again and followed the lights once more.

During the turtle breeding season, nighttime supervision is required so that these beaches are not left completely uncontrolled and accessible to anyone without restriction.

Another major enemy, especially in Cyprus, is the fox, which destroys countless eggs and hatchlings every night by digging up the nests—something I have witnessed with my own eyes.

Birds of prey, snakes and crabs also prey on the small hatchlings, seizing them before they reach the sea. Even when they manage to reach the water, they still have to face marine predators. Of the thousands of hatchlings that emerge from their eggs, only a very small number survive and reach adulthood.

An omnivorous species

The third turtle found in Cyprus is the freshwater Balkan Pond Turtle, also known as the Western Caspian Turtle (Mauremys rivulata), called the Striped-neck Terrapin or river turtle in Greek.

It is a medium-sized turtle that can reach a length of up to 30 centimetres. It is an omnivorous species and feeds on both animals and plants, generally consuming whatever it can find in the water.

It inhabits lakes and rivers that contain water throughout the year. In late spring, it lays up to five eggs in holes that the females dig in the soil.

The number of areas in which it survives in Cyprus is extremely limited, and the species is in danger of disappearing from our island. Because of prolonged drought, many of its habitats have dried up and been left without water. As a result, these turtles have disappeared forever from habitats where they had lived for thousands of years.

To save the species, individuals need to be transferred from areas where sufficient numbers of turtles remain to locations containing water throughout the year, such as large reservoirs, so that the species can be secured and perpetuated.

A major threat to the Balkan Pond Turtle

A major threat to the Balkan Pond Turtle is the invasive freshwater turtle known as the Red-eared Slider (Trachemys scripta), which originates from the United States and was a popular pet in Cyprus several years ago.

Its sale by pet shops has now been prohibited by the Republic of Cyprus, but many people bring these turtles illegally from the occupied areas, where trade in the species is permitted.

Many people became tired of keeping these turtles and thought it was a good idea to release them into lakes. As a result, the animals became established and began displacing our native Balkan Pond Turtle, threatening it with extinction.

Two popular release locations for this invasive species are the lakes at Athalassa. Balkan Pond Turtles once occurred there, but the Red-eared Sliders have now caused them to disappear.

The Balkan Pond Turtle, Green Sea Turtle and Loggerhead Sea Turtle are priority species and receive particularly strict protection under European Directive 92/43/EEC and Cyprus Law 153(I)/2003. They have also been classified as threatened species by the IUCN.
