The winged world of birds is undoubtedly one of the wonders of nature. One of the many gifts of birds is their ability to build nests. Each species uses a different nest-building technique, and many species create genuine works of art.

Almost all birds lay their eggs during the spring months. The male attracts the female in various ways, either by singing or by displaying its feathers. In many species, the plumage changes during the breeding season, taking on breeding colours that are much more intense. As soon as they mate, they begin building their nest. Several bird species, when conditions are favourable, breed more than once during a single breeding season.

The nest may be built by the male alone, the female alone or both birds together, using materials such as sticks, grasses and mud, which they carry mainly in their beaks. The interior of the nest is lined with softer grasses or down feathers.

Once construction of the nest has been completed, the female begins laying her eggs inside it. The eggs are incubated sometimes by the female and sometimes by the male. Several days later, depending on the bird species, the chicks hatch from the eggs.

There are, however, birds that lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and abandon them there, as the cuckoo does. Birds watch over and protect their chicks until they grow feathers. Many birds give food to their young after first partially digesting it, while others provide it exactly as they find it. At first, the chicks cannot fly and are covered only with soft down.

Birds “paint” their eggs for camouflage and protection. The colours and markings of the eggs are produced by the birds exclusively for camouflage. The spots and colours are created by specialised glands in the bird during the final stage before the egg is laid.

Depending on the species, birds build their nests on the ground, on houses, in trees and bushes, on rocks, in holes, on cliffs, on the water and in almost every place the human mind can imagine, so that they can lay their eggs as safely as possible. Each species uses different materials, which it usually finds in nature. The eggs of every bird species have different colours and sizes.

Unfortunately, hundreds of egg collectors around the world cause enormous and often irreparable damage by taking birds’ eggs from their nests. They make no distinction whatsoever and even collect eggs belonging to species threatened with complete extinction. In Cyprus, as well as in many other countries, this is strictly prohibited by law.

Some species, such as the Long-eared Owl (Asio otus), do not build nests but lay their eggs in old corvid nests. Other species, such as the Little Owl, European Roller and Peregrine Falcon, lay their eggs in holes without using any nesting material.

The Common Quail, Chukar Partridge, Black Francolin and larks nest on the ground among dense grasses and bushes, constructing their nests from soft grasses and feathers.

The Eurasian Stone-curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus) does not construct a nest at all. It lays its eggs directly on the ground among pebbles for camouflage.

The nest of the Magpie is impressive. It usually builds its nest on thorny shrubs and hawthorn trees. It begins construction using thick branches and then lines the interior with a thick layer of mud, which it shapes with its beak. It does this to insulate the nest against the cold. It then places very fine, soft, dry grasses inside and finally constructs a type of roof from dry branches above the nest to protect the chicks from rain and sunlight. The Magpie is one of the most intelligent birds found on our island.

The Hooded Crow (Corvus corone) builds its nest high in trees such as eucalyptus and cypress trees, using thick branches. Inside, it places various soft materials, including feathers from other birds, pieces of string and paper, and even plastic bags.

The Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica), Common House Martin (Delichon urbicum) and Red-rumped Swallow (Cecropis daurica), all three belonging to the same family, use the same materials, but each species has its own technique regarding the shape of its nest.

The materials they use consist of mud mixed with small pieces of grass to strengthen the nest, exactly as mud-brick houses were built in the past. They place very soft grasses and feathers inside their nests. They build their nests in stables, beneath the verandas of houses, under bridges and inside natural cavities in cliffs.

The European Greenfinch (Carduelis chloris), European Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis), Common Linnet (Carduelis cannabina) and European Serin (Serinus serinus), which belong to the same family, use the same nest-building technique. They construct their nests among dense tree branches.

The nests built by these birds can only be described as works of art. For their construction, they weave dry grasses around the outside and place various soft natural materials inside, such as small feathers, soft grasses, animal hair and even pieces of string.

Many species of waterbirds, such as wild ducks, Eurasian Coots and grebes, construct floating nests on the water among dense aquatic vegetation.

The Great Tit (Parus major) builds its nest inside holes, pipes, roof tiles and even letterboxes. It constructs its nest mainly from the hair of animals such as goats, horses and sheep.

The Zitting Cisticola (Cisticola juncidis) builds its nest mainly with spider webs, inside and among dense grasses.

The Common Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus), European Turtle Dove (Streptopelia turtur), Laughing Dove (Streptopelia senegalensis) and Eurasian Collared Dove (Streptopelia decaocto), which belong to the same family, are among the least skilful birds when it comes to nest building. They construct their nests in trees using only a few twigs, and it is remarkable that their eggs and chicks do not fall to the ground.

The dangers faced by birds’ eggs and chicks include human activities, natural disasters such as torrential rain, strong winds and sudden changes in temperature, as well as snakes, foxes, rats, cats and birds of prey.

Many bird species remove the droppings of their chicks and keep their nests clean, carrying the droppings away in their beaks or even eating them. Guided by pure instinct, the chicks themselves wait for their parents before defecating so that the adults can remove the waste.
