Το Centrocoris variegatus
Hemiptera Caucasi Tesseratomidae monographice dispositae.
Το αρχικό όνομα καταγράφεται στο Catalogue of Palaearctic Heteroptera ως:
Centrocoris variegata Kolenati, 1845
και αποτελεί το basionym του σημερινού:
Centrocoris variegatus Kolenati, 1845.

Centrocoris variegatus
Centrocoris variegatus Kolenati, 1845 is a true bug belonging to the family Coreidae, subfamily Coreinae and tribe Coreini. It belongs to the genus Centrocoris, a Palaearctic group containing several morphologically similar species.
The species was described by Friedrich August Kolenati in 1845. Its name is currently accepted as valid by major taxonomic resources including ITIS, NCBI and the Catalogue of Palaearctic Heteroptera.
Description
Centrocoris variegatus has the characteristic general appearance of a coreid bug, with an elongated and relatively flattened body, well-developed antennae and hemelytra covering much of the abdomen.
Its colour is generally cryptic, combining brownish, grey-brown and yellowish shades with variegated punctation. This earthy colour pattern provides effective camouflage among dry vegetation, stems and plant debris.
Like other Coreidae, it possesses piercing-sucking mouthparts, which are used to penetrate plant tissues and obtain fluids.
Identification and Centrocoris spiniger
An important consideration when identifying this species is its similarity to Centrocoris spiniger (Fabricius, 1781). Both belong to the same genus and occur within the wider Mediterranean region.
Characters used to distinguish the two include the proportions of the antennae, with C. variegatus reported as having shorter antennae than C. spiniger. Reliable identification should nevertheless be based on a combination of diagnostic morphological characters rather than a single feature.
Feeding
Centrocoris variegatus is phytophagous. Like other Coreidae, it uses its rostrum to pierce plant tissues and obtain fluids.
Coreidae as a whole include many species that feed on different plant structures, including shoots, developing fruits and seeds. Detailed host associations of C. variegatus are less thoroughly documented than those of some better-studied European coreids, and specific host plants should not be assigned without reliable published evidence.
Life Cycle
Like other Heteroptera, Centrocoris variegatus undergoes incomplete metamorphosis:
egg → nymphal instars → adult
The young nymphs resemble the adults in their basic body form but are smaller and lack fully developed wings and reproductive structures.
Through successive moults, the nymphs increase in size and their wing structures progressively develop. The final moult produces the fully developed adult.
Distribution
Centrocoris variegatus is a western Palaearctic species. Scientific literature describes it as having a western Palaearctic distribution, and it is recorded across substantial parts of Europe and the Mediterranean region.
It is documented from the Iberian Peninsula and other parts of southern Europe, while its Mediterranean range extends eastwards. Historical entomological literature also records the species from the region of present-day Israel.
Ecology
The species is associated principally with warm environments of the western Palaearctic and Mediterranean regions. Its mottled brown coloration provides effective concealment among low and dry vegetation.
Adults are active on vegetation and are capable of flight, allowing movement between suitable habitats and host plants.
Family Coreidae
The Coreidae are a large, globally distributed family of Heteroptera. They are commonly known in English as leaf-footed bugs, although the conspicuous expansion of the hind tibiae from which this name derives is much more strongly developed in some genera and is not characteristic of every member of the family.
ITIS places Centrocoris within the subfamily Coreinae and tribe Coreini.
Conservation Status
There is no global IUCN Red List assessment assigning Centrocoris variegatus a threat category.
Taxonomic History
Kolenati described the species in 1845 in Meletemata Entomologica II. Hemiptera Caucasi Tesseratomidae monographice dispositae.
The Catalogue of Palaearctic Heteroptera records the original spelling:
