Ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον παρουσιάζουν οι κολλώδεις επιφάνειες των βλαστών του, πάνω στις οποίες μπορούν να προσκολληθούν έντομα. Η φωτογραφική καταγραφή του Γιώργου Κωνσταντίνου στη Χαλεύκα αποτυπώνει αυτό το φαινόμενο και αναδεικνύει ένα ενδιαφέρον ερώτημα για την οικολογία του φυτού: ποια λειτουργία εξυπηρετεί η παγίδευση των εντόμων;
Γιατί μπορεί να παγιδεύει έντομα;
Είναι εντομοφάγο;

Giant catchfly – Silene gigantea L. subsp. gigantea – Cyprus
Text by George Konstantinou
Photographs: George Konstantinou – Chalevka, 27 April 2016
Silene gigantea subsp. gigantea is a striking herbaceous member of the Cypriot flora, with tall flowering stems and characteristically clustered flowers. It belongs to the family Caryophyllaceae, which includes carnations and numerous other catchflies.
Its sticky stem surfaces are particularly interesting because insects can become attached to them. George Konstantinou’s photographic record from Chalevka documents this phenomenon and raises an intriguing ecological question: what function does insect trapping serve?
Names and taxonomic position
The Greek name Σιληνή η γιγάντειος is recorded in botanical databases, while the English name Giant catchfly is also used by the Royal Horticultural Society. These names apply to the species Silene gigantea, to which this subspecies belongs.
The epithet gigantea means “giant”. The English word catchfly, used for various Silene species, refers to the ability of some of them to retain insects on sticky surfaces. The common name does not constitute evidence of insectivory.
Subsp. gigantea is the species’ nominal subspecies. The older treatment Silene gigantea var. gigantea also occurs in the literature. Subspecies are distinguished by combinations of characters rather than height or stickiness alone.
Description and identification
The plant develops basal leaves forming a rosette and upright flowering stems. Stem leaves are opposite, with the upper leaves narrower than those at the base. In the nominal subspecies, the rosette leaves can remain green during flowering.
The inflorescence contains dense flower clusters. Their arrangement and the glandular or non-glandular hairs on the calyces and flower stalks are important identification features. The petals are divided at their tips.
A study of Cypriot material recorded plants 30–100 centimetres tall, a calyx approximately 10 millimetres long and a broadly ovoid capsule approximately 8–10 millimetres long. These measurements describe the material examined and are not absolute limits for every individual.
Geographical distribution
This is a native, non-endemic plant of Cyprus. The subspecies’ natural range also includes parts of Greece and its islands, the Balkans, western and southwestern Turkey and Lebanon.
In Cyprus it is associated with the northern part of the island and the Pentadaktylos Mountains. Its occurrence at Chalevka is documented by botanical records and by the photographs presented here.
Published specimens also come from limestone rocky sites near Saint Hilarion Castle. These records confirm particular localities without necessarily representing its entire distribution on the island.
Habitat and ecology
Silene gigantea subsp. gigantea is particularly associated with limestone rocks, crevices and rocky slopes. It can grow in small pockets of soil between rocks, where moisture and shade differ considerably from conditions in the surrounding landscape.
Growth in rock crevices is described as chasmophytic. Studies of the S. gigantea complex have shown that similar forms can occur in different evolutionary lineages occupying these conditions. This helps explain why outward similarity does not always indicate an equally close genetic relationship.
Its relatively limited seed dispersal ability is also relevant to the geographical history and differentiation of its populations.
Flowering, reproduction and life cycle
Kew describes the plant as biennial. In a typical biennial cycle, the first growing period is devoted mainly to rosette development and establishment. This is followed by the production of the flowering stem, flowering and seed formation.
The study of Cypriot material gives a flowering period of May–July. The photographic record at Chalevka was made on 27 April, demonstrating the presence of well-developed plants during spring. The timing of emergence and development is influenced by local conditions.
Following fertilisation, dry capsules containing small seeds develop. At maturity, the capsules open and allow the seeds to be released. Establishment of the next generation depends on successful germination and the survival of young plants in suitable microsites.
George Konstantinou’s observation: insects trapped on the stems
The photographs from Chalevka show insects attached to the glossy, sticky stem surface. Close views of a large fly show wings and legs in contact with the adhesive surface. Another photograph records a smaller insect attached to the stem.
This observation provides photographic evidence of insect retention by the plant. However, the images cannot establish how long the insects remained attached, whether they were alive when photographed or their eventual fate.
Most importantly, attachment alone does not demonstrate feeding. Classification as a carnivorous plant requires evidence that nutrients derived from the trapped animals are utilised.
Related research on Silene regia
Possible carnivory has been investigated in the related Silene regia, known as Royal catchfly. This plant retains small insects with glandular hairs.
Garrett John Dienno’s 2017 master’s research confirmed trapping but did not demonstrate active prey attraction or detect the proteinase response investigated. Nutrient absorption was not subsequently tested. The findings did not support classification as carnivorous.
This comparison illustrates why insect capture must be distinguished from nutritional utilisation. It does not establish that S. gigantea behaves identically.
Why might it trap insects?
One possible explanation is that the sticky surface acts as a defensive barrier, making it difficult for small arthropods to climb towards the reproductive organs. It could consequently restrict herbivores or visitors that remove nectar without effective pollination. Insects touching the stem during flight might also become trapped incidentally.
For Silene gigantea subsp. gigantea, this remains a hypothesis requiring testing. The photographic observation does not establish the secretion’s function.
A relevant study was conducted by Inagaki and Isobe on Silene armeria in 2022. The researchers investigated protection against ants but did not observe ants visiting flowers even when the sticky zone was covered. Conversely, plants with intact sticky zones received more pollinator visits and performed better in certain reproductive measures.
The sticky surface may therefore be associated with more than one ecological function. Results from one species cannot automatically be applied to another.
Is it insectivorous?
Trapped insects provide an initial observable clue, rather than final proof of carnivory. Breakdown of animal material, absorption of its nutrients and benefits to the plant need to be investigated.
The absence of a particular enzyme does not exclude every possible mechanism of utilisation, because other organisms participate in some carnivorous systems. Equally, the presence of enzymes alone is insufficient without evidence of absorption.
The Chalevka record demonstrates trapping; it does not establish nutritional utilisation of insects. The question is suitable for dedicated experimental research involving appropriate controls and measurements of nutrient transfer.
History of scientific research
The species is associated with eighteenth-century Linnaean nomenclature. Both Silene gigantea L. and Silene gigantea (L.) L. are used in modern literature, with Kew linking the latter to the earlier name Cucubalus giganteus L.
Taxonomic investigation has continued through studies of morphology, pollen and genetic markers. The 2015 study examined morphological differentiation throughout the complex’s distribution. The 2017 work demonstrated that certain morphologically defined subspecies do not correspond to a single genetic lineage and described the subspecies epirota.
These findings show that understanding the complex’s taxonomy requires morphological and molecular evidence to be considered together.
Status in Cyprus and conservation
Flora of Cyprus classifies the subspecies as native and non-endemic. This describes its origin and distribution rather than automatically determining its level of extinction risk.
Conserving natural localities and rocky vegetation is important for the continuity of local populations. Observation and photography should avoid uprooting plants, removing flowering stems or damaging the small soil pockets in which plants become established.
The Chalevka record is also valuable because it highlights a plant–insect relationship deserving systematic investigation, without prejudging its explanation.
