The Supermoon of 14 November 2016 was a particularly impressive astronomical event because the full Moon occurred very close in time to perigee, the point in the Moon's elliptical orbit at which it is closest to Earth.
This particular full Moon was exceptional because the Moon came closer to Earth than during any other full Moon since 1948. A similarly close full Moon would not occur again until 25 November 2034.
What is a Supermoon?
The term Supermoon is widely used to describe a full Moon occurring when the Moon is close to perigee.
The Moon's orbit around Earth is not a perfect circle but is elliptical. Consequently, its distance from Earth changes continuously. Its closest orbital point is known as perigee, while its most distant point is known as apogee.
A more precise astronomical description of the geometry involved is a perigee-syzygy of the Earth–Moon–Sun system.
The exceptional full Moon of 14 November 2016
On 14 November 2016, the Moon reached perigee at approximately 11:23 UTC, at a distance of about 356,510 kilometres from the centre of Earth. The exact full Moon followed only about two and a half hours later, at 13:52 UTC.
This very small time difference between perigee and the full Moon was what made the event particularly remarkable.
Compared with a full Moon near apogee, the Moon could appear up to approximately 14% larger in diameter and 30% brighter.
The closest full Moon since 1948
The event attracted worldwide attention because it was the closest full Moon to Earth since 26 January 1948.
After 14 November 2016, approximately another 18 years would have to pass before an even closer comparable full Moon occurred, on 25 November 2034.
The Supermoon from Cyprus
In Cyprus, considerable cloud cover made observing and photographing the Moon difficult.
Despite the challenging conditions, I climbed to a hill above the abandoned village of Agios Sozomenos, near Potamia, waiting for openings between the clouds in order to photograph and film the Supermoon.
The photographs and video presented in this post document the Supermoon of 14 November 2016 as seen from Cyprus.
The photographic material from Agios Sozomenos was also featured on the same day by City Free Press – SigmaLive, in an article by Michalis Michaelidis about the Supermoon as seen from Cyprus.
Why does the Moon look enormous near the horizon?
In photographs of a rising or setting full Moon, it can appear exceptionally large when close to the horizon, particularly when mountains, trees, buildings or other landscape features are included in the same frame.
In addition to the genuine increase in apparent angular size caused by the Moon being near perigee, the familiar “Moon illusion” also plays a role: the human brain perceives the Moon near the horizon as larger than when it is high in the sky.
A remarkable astronomical event
The Supermoon of 14 November 2016 was not simply another beautiful full Moon. The exceptionally close timing of the full Moon and perigee made it the closest full Moon to Earth for approximately 68 years.
For observers and photographers around the world — including Cyprus — it provided a rare opportunity to document an impressive astronomical phenomenon.
