Achna Dam, in the Famagusta District, is an important wetland in Cyprus for waterbirds and migratory birds. Among the species breeding in the area is the Spur-winged Lapwing (Vanellus spinosus), a characteristic ground-nesting wader that usually breeds in open areas close to water. BirdLife Cyprus specifically lists Achna Dam among the breeding sites of the species in Cyprus.
The video
The video shows a herd of animals coming down to Achna Dam to drink during the breeding season of the Spur-winged Lapwing.
The situation becomes particularly serious when the animals move across the low, open shores where the birds have established their nests. The Spur-winged Lapwing does not nest in trees or bushes. Its eggs are laid directly on the ground, in a shallow scrape, making the nests extremely vulnerable to anything moving uncontrolled through the breeding areas.
In this case, as documented in the video, many nests are at risk of being trampled as the animals approach the water.
An important breeding area
The importance of Achna Dam for the Spur-winged Lapwing is well documented. A scientific study of the species' breeding population in Cyprus repeatedly recorded confirmed breeding at Achna Dam between 2003 and 2009. Several breeding pairs were recorded in some years, while in 2005 most breeding attempts at the site were reported to have failed because of human disturbance.
BirdLife Cyprus continues to identify Achna Dam as a breeding site for the Spur-winged Lapwing and an important location for observing the species.
Ground nests are particularly vulnerable
For a ground-nesting bird, even an apparently ordinary activity can have serious consequences when it takes place within its breeding area.
The eggs of the Spur-winged Lapwing are extremely well camouflaged against the ground. While this provides protection from some predators, it also means that nests can easily go unnoticed by people or animals.
Disturbance is a recognised threat to ground-nesting waders in Cyprus. Camera-trap monitoring by BirdLife Cyprus has documented a Spur-winged Lapwing nest being abandoned because of disturbance, as well as other pressures affecting the nests of breeding waders.
Protection during the breeding season
The video provides a clear example of how easily a threat can arise for a species that depends on exposed wetland shores for breeding.
The presence of livestock around a wetland is not necessarily incompatible with nature conservation. During the nesting season, however, appropriate management is essential, so that herds do not move through active nesting areas and eggs and nests are not destroyed by trampling.
Protecting small, clearly defined breeding zones, minimising disturbance and controlling access during the critical nesting period can make the difference between a successful and an unsuccessful breeding season.
The intense alarm calls of the Spur-winged Lapwing can themselves provide a warning. BirdLife Cyprus notes that when the birds become particularly vocal, this often indicates disturbance or a threat close to a nest or chicks.
Achna Dam is not simply a water reservoir. It is a living wetland and an important breeding and resting area for the birdlife of Cyprus. Protecting nesting sites during the breeding season is essential if species such as the Spur-winged Lapwing are to continue breeding successfully there.
