Το 8½ λεπτών ντοκιμαντέρ παρουσιάζει Φοινικόπτερα – Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) στην Αλυκή Λάρνακας, έναν από τους σημαντικότερους υγροτόπους της Κύπρου και έναν από τους γνωστότερους τόπους συγκέντρωσης του είδους στο νησί.
Το βίντεο καταγράφει τα Φοινικόπτερα μέσα στο φυσικό περιβάλλον της αλυκής, καθώς κινούνται στα ρηχά νερά, αναζητούν τροφή και συγκεντρώνονται σε κοπάδια. Με τα πολύ μακριά πόδια και τον λαιμό τους, καθώς και τον χαρακτηριστικό λευκορόδινο χρωματισμό των ενηλίκων, αποτελούν κάθε χειμώνα ένα από τα εντυπωσιακότερα θεάματα της κυπριακής φύσης.
Η Αλυκή Λάρνακας αποκτά ιδιαίτερη σημασία για τα Φοινικόπτερα κατά τους υγρούς μήνες, όταν γεμίζει με νερό και δημιουργούνται κατάλληλες συνθήκες τροφοληψίας. Τα πουλιά μπορούν τότε να συγκεντρώνονται σε μεγάλους αριθμούς, χρησιμοποιώντας τα ρηχά νερά για τροφή και ανάπαυση.
Το ντοκιμαντέρ επικεντρώνεται στην παρατήρηση και καταγραφή των πουλιών στην Αλυκή Λάρνακας και αποτελεί μέρος του φωτογραφικού και κινηματογραφικού αρχείου μου για την άγρια ζωή και τους υγροτόπους της Κύπρου.
Η παρουσία των Φοινικόπτερων είναι άμεσα συνδεδεμένη με τη διατήρηση των αλυκών και των άλλων φυσικών υγροτόπων του νησιού. Η προστασία αυτών των περιοχών είναι απαραίτητη όχι μόνο για τα Φοινικόπτερα αλλά και για τα πολυάριθμα μεταναστευτικά και υδρόβια πουλιά που χρησιμοποιούν τους κυπριακούς υγροτόπους κατά τη διάρκεια του ετήσιου κύκλου τους.

This 8½-minute documentary presents Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) at Larnaca Salt Lake, one of the most important wetlands in Cyprus and one of the best-known sites for gatherings of this species on the island.
The video records the flamingos in their natural salt-lake environment as they move through the shallow water, search for food and gather in flocks. With their exceptionally long legs and necks and the characteristic white and pink plumage of the adults, Greater Flamingos create one of the most impressive wildlife spectacles seen in Cyprus during winter.
Larnaca Salt Lake becomes particularly important for flamingos during the wetter months, when it fills with water and suitable feeding conditions develop. The birds may then gather in large numbers, using the shallow waters for feeding and resting.
The documentary concentrates on the observation and recording of the birds at Larnaca Salt Lake and forms part of my photographic and video archive documenting the wildlife and wetlands of Cyprus.
The presence of flamingos is closely connected with the conservation of the island's salt lakes and other natural wetlands. Protecting these habitats is important not only for Greater Flamingos but also for the many migratory and waterbirds that depend on Cyprus wetlands during their annual cycle.
