1. Tetrarthrosoma malickyi Strasser, 1979
2. Tetrarthrosoma syriacum (Humbert & De Saussure, 1869)

Millipedes of the genus Tetrarthrosoma – Cyprus
Text by George Konstantinou
Photos and videos: 7 February 2018, by George Konstantinou
Tetrarthrosoma Verhoeff, 1898 is a genus of millipedes belonging to the family Paradoxosomatidae and the order Polydesmida. Its members are soil-dwelling arthropods with elongated, flattened bodies and numerous legs. They usually live concealed beneath stones, fallen wood and plant remains or within leaf litter and the upper layers of the soil.
The photographs and videos in the original post show millipedes belonging to the genus Tetrarthrosoma. The identification is retained at genus level because two confirmed and relatively similar species occur in Cyprus: the endemic Tetrarthrosoma malickyi Strasser, 1979 and the more widely distributed Tetrarthrosoma syriacum (Humbert & De Saussure, 1869).
Reliable separation of the two species generally requires the examination of an adult male, particularly the morphology of its gonopods. Identification based only on general appearance, photographs or female specimens is not always reliable.
Characteristics of the genus
Tetrarthrosoma millipedes have an elongated body composed of successive rings. Unlike the more cylindrical members of the order Julida, Polydesmida usually have a flattened dorsal surface and lateral extensions on most body rings. These extensions are known as paranota and give the animal a broader, flatter appearance.
The body is covered by a hardened exoskeleton that provides support and protection. The head bears a pair of antennae used to explore the surroundings, as well as mouthparts suited to processing soft or decomposing plant material.
Most body rings bear two pairs of legs. This arrangement evolved through the fusion of two original body segments and gave the class its name, Diplopoda, meaning “double feet”.
Millipedes rather than centipedes
Millipedes are frequently confused with centipedes, although they belong to different classes and have different morphology and behaviour.
Millipedes usually possess two pairs of legs on most body rings, move relatively slowly and feed primarily on dead organic material. Centipedes belong to the class Chilopoda, have one pair of legs per body segment and are fast-moving predators. Their first pair of legs is modified into venom-bearing forcipules used to capture prey.
Tetrarthrosoma millipedes do not possess such venom-bearing forcipules, do not hunt other animals and present no danger to humans.
Habitat and dependence on moisture
Millipedes lose water relatively easily and are therefore closely associated with moist, protected microhabitats. During dry and hot periods, they remain beneath stones, within the soil, in crevices, beneath bark and fallen wood or deeper within the leaf litter.
In Cyprus, members of Tetrarthrosoma have been recorded from a remarkably wide range of habitats, including:
- coastal phrygana,
- open areas with carob trees and scrub,
- pine forests,
- streamside vegetation,
- humid ravines with plane trees,
- scrub and maquis vegetation,
- meadows and pastures,
- mountain woodland with oaks,
- coastal sandy habitats.
They have been found from sea level to the higher elevations of the Troodos Mountains. Their activity becomes more visible following rainfall, when increased moisture allows them to leave their shelters and move across the surface.
Diet and ecological importance
Tetrarthrosoma, like most millipedes, contributes to the decomposition of dead organic material. Its members feed mainly on soft, decaying leaves, dead plant tissues and organic remains found on the ground.
During feeding, they fragment plant material into smaller particles. This increases the surface available to fungi, bacteria and other microorganisms. The process contributes to:
- decomposition of leaf litter,
- nutrient recycling,
- formation of humus,
- maintenance of soil fertility and structure.
They also form part of the food web, as they may be consumed by birds, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals and predatory invertebrates.
Defence and behaviour
When disturbed, a Tetrarthrosoma millipede usually attempts to move away or remain motionless. Its hardened, flattened body and lateral paranota provide a degree of mechanical protection.
Like many Polydesmida, it possesses defensive glands along the body. These glands can release small quantities of chemicals that discourage predators. The substances are not used to attack or capture prey.
The animals are harmless, but they should not be handled or compressed unnecessarily. Hands should be washed following direct contact, and contact with the eyes should be avoided.
Reproduction and identification of the sexes
In adult males, certain legs on the seventh body ring are modified into reproductive structures known as gonopods. The gonopods transfer sperm, and their complex morphology provides some of the most important characters used in millipede classification and species identification.
Females deposit their eggs in protected places within the soil or leaf litter. Juveniles do not initially possess the final number of body rings and legs. As they grow, they undergo successive moults and acquire additional segments.
Identification of Tetrarthrosoma species from females or immature individuals can be extremely difficult. The scientific study of Cyprus millipedes reports Tetrarthrosoma specimens whose identity could not be established because adult males were unavailable.
The two species recorded in Cyprus
Two species of the genus have been confirmed in the millipede fauna of Cyprus.
1. Tetrarthrosoma malickyi Strasser, 1979
The current MilliBase classification records the name as Tetrarthrosoma (Hoffmaneuma) malickyi Strasser, 1979, with Hoffmaneuma treated as a subgenus.
The species was described from Cyprus and, according to the available scientific records, is known only from the island. It is therefore endemic to Cyprus.
It has been recorded from numerous localities and elevations, including:
- Trooditissa Monastery,
- the Dymes area,
- Mylikouri,
- Argaki Valley,
- the Baths of Aphrodite,
- Tillyria,
- Zakaki,
- Kourion,
- Apliki–Farmakas,
- Mesa Potamos,
- Kafizes and the banks of the Xeros River,
- Souni–Zanakia.
Records extending from coastal phrygana to mountain woodland at approximately 1,350 metres show that it can occupy different environmental conditions, provided that suitable moist shelters are available.
2. Tetrarthrosoma syriacum (Humbert & De Saussure, 1869)
Tetrarthrosoma syriacum has a wider geographical distribution. In addition to Cyprus, it has been reported from Syria, Israel, Lebanon, Iran and Iraq.
In Cyprus it has been recorded from numerous lowland, coastal and foothill areas, including:
- Palaipaphos and Kouklia,
- Avgas Gorge,
- Pegeia,
- Dipotamos,
- Sia–Mathiatis,
- the Diarizos Valley,
- Ormideia,
- Liopetri,
- areas of the Pentadaktylos mountain range,
- the Karpasia region,
- the Agia Napa area.
The name Strongylosoma (Tetrarthrosoma) cyprium Verhoeff, 1902, formerly applied to specimens from Cyprus, was treated in 2014 as a junior synonym of Tetrarthrosoma syriacum.
Why the photographed animals should not be assigned arbitrarily to a species
The two Cypriot species may occur in similar habitats, while their external appearance does not always provide reliable diagnostic characters. Their geographical ranges also overlap in certain areas.
Without examination of an adult male and its gonopods, assigning a photographed individual to either species may be arbitrary. The organisms shown in this post are therefore correctly recorded as Tetrarthrosoma sp., indicating membership of the genus without a secure species-level identification.
Origin of the endemic Cypriot species
The study of Cyprus millipedes links the presence of the endemic T. malickyi with the island’s palaeogeographical history. The authors proposed that its ancestors may have reached Cyprus through temporary land connections during the Messinian Salinity Crisis, approximately 6–5.3 million years ago.
Following the geographical isolation of Cyprus, the population evolved independently and diverged from related populations in neighbouring regions. This remains a scientific hypothesis based on current distributions and relationships between the species, rather than direct proof of the precise colonisation route.
Protection of soil-dwelling fauna
Millipedes are important to the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems but are often overlooked because of their small size and concealed way of life.
The principal pressures that may affect members of the genus include:
- destruction and drying of microhabitats,
- fires,
- excessive pesticide use,
- removal of leaf litter and dead wood,
- intensive disturbance of the soil,
- residential and tourism development.
Preserving natural vegetation, leaf litter, fallen trunks and undisturbed patches of soil helps not only millipedes but the entire community of decomposing organisms.
