Mylabris madoni Marseul, 1883 – An endemic species of Cyprus
Text: George Konstantinou
An endemic beetle of Cyprus
Mylabris madoni is a beetle belonging to the family Meloidae and is endemic to Cyprus, as its confirmed natural distribution is restricted to the island. The type locality given in the original description is simply “Chypre” – Cyprus.
Published records include Nicosia, Larnaca, Limassol, Mouttagiaka and Stavrovouni. Its presence in the Pentadaktylos mountain range is also confirmed by the photographs accompanying this post. Older reports of the species from Sicily and other distant regions are considered erroneous.
Description
The body measures approximately 11–15.5 millimetres in length. The head, pronotum, antennae and legs are predominantly black. The elytra are bright orange-red, with characteristic black spots or transverse bands. This striking combination of red and black functions as warning coloration.
Accurate identification requires care because several species of Mylabris have similar colour patterns. Geographic origin, elytral morphology and, when necessary, the examination of detailed anatomical characters contribute to a reliable identification.
Biology
Adult beetles of the genus Mylabris are active during the day and are usually encountered on flowers, where they feed on pollen and other floral tissues. Published information specifically concerning the biology of Mylabris madoni is limited; therefore, details known only from related species should not automatically be attributed to this Cypriot endemic.
Meloidae undergo a complex form of development involving successive larval stages of different forms, known as hypermetamorphosis. In many species of the tribe Mylabrini, the larvae develop by feeding on the eggs of other insects, particularly grasshoppers. The precise host organisms used by the Cypriot species have not been documented in detail in the available literature.
Cantharidin and precautions
Like other members of the family Meloidae, it may produce cantharidin, a powerful irritant used as a chemical defence. Contact with an injured or crushed beetle may cause skin irritation and blistering. It should therefore not be handled or crushed with bare hands.
Taxonomic history
The species was described by Sylvain Auguste de Marseul in 1883. It was formerly cited as Zonabris madoni, while the name Zonabris madoni var. lividiana Pic, 1911 refers to an old, unaccepted intraspecific form. The currently accepted name remains Mylabris madoni Marseul, 1883.
