Hippotion celerio (Linnaeus, 1758) – Vine Hawk-moth / Silver-striped Hawk-moth

Vine Hawk-moth και Silver-striped Hawk-moth.

Χρησιμοποιείται επίσης το Grapevine Hawkmoth. Και οι τρεις ονομασίες είναι καταγεγραμμένες στο Catalogue of Life.

Hippotion celerio (Linnaeus, 1758) – Vine Hawk-moth / Silver-striped Hawk-moth

Hippotion celerio (Linnaeus, 1758), commonly known as the Vine Hawk-moth or Silver-striped Hawk-moth, is a striking moth belonging to the family Sphingidae. Another established English name is Grapevine Hawkmoth.

It is characterised by its long, streamlined body, narrow pointed forewings and the conspicuous pale silvery stripe running along each forewing. It is a powerful and exceptionally fast flyer and is well known for its ability to migrate over considerable distances.

Scientific Classification

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Sphingidae
Genus: Hippotion
Species: Hippotion celerio (Linnaeus, 1758)

The species was originally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 under the name Sphinx celerio. It was subsequently transferred to the genus Hippotion.

Common Names

The most widely used English common names are:

Vine Hawk-moth
Silver-striped Hawk-moth

The name Grapevine Hawkmoth is also used.

The name Silver-striped Hawk-moth refers to the distinctive pale or silvery longitudinal stripe visible across the forewings, one of the most useful external features for recognising the adult moth.

Appearance

Hippotion celerio has the streamlined appearance typical of the hawk-moths.

The body is long, slender and powerful, while the forewings are elongated and sharply pointed.

The general colour of the forewings ranges from brown to olive-brown. A conspicuous pale, often silvery-white stripe extends diagonally along each forewing and gives the moth its characteristic appearance.

The hindwings are more colourful, with pinkish to reddish areas combined with darker markings.

When resting with the forewings covering the hindwings, the moth's subdued brown coloration provides effective camouflage.

Size

The Vine Hawk-moth is a relatively large moth, with a wingspan generally around 70–80 mm, although some variation occurs between individuals.

Its long, narrow wings and streamlined body are particularly well adapted for powerful and rapid flight.

A Powerful Flyer

One of the most remarkable characteristics of Hippotion celerio is its flying ability.

Hawk-moths are among the strongest flying Lepidoptera, and this species is capable of travelling considerable distances.

Its aerodynamic body and narrow wings allow rapid, sustained flight. This ability is closely connected with the species' migratory behaviour.

Individuals can appear far beyond their principal breeding range, including in parts of northern Europe where the species occurs as a migrant.

Nocturnal Activity

The adult Hippotion celerio is primarily nocturnal.

Activity generally begins around dusk and continues during the night, when adults search for flowers, mates and suitable habitats.

Like many hawk-moths, it possesses a long proboscis that allows it to obtain nectar from flowers.

Hawk-moths are famous for their ability to hover in front of flowers while feeding, somewhat resembling hummingbirds in their flight behaviour.

The Caterpillar

The caterpillar of Hippotion celerio is large and very distinctive.

Like many sphingid caterpillars, it possesses a characteristic horn-like projection at the rear of the body.

Another remarkable feature is the presence of prominent eye-like markings near the front of the body.

These false eyes can make the caterpillar appear larger and more threatening to potential predators.

The larva is variable in colour, and both green and brown forms can occur. This variation provides effective camouflage in different surroundings.

Host Plants

The caterpillar feeds on a variety of plants.

The species is particularly associated with grapevine (Vitis vinifera), which explains the common names Vine Hawk-moth and Grapevine Hawkmoth.

Other recorded larval food plants include species of Galium and Epilobium, among several other plants.

The ability to utilise a range of host plants is advantageous for a highly mobile and migratory species because suitable breeding conditions may be encountered across very different geographical areas.

Life Cycle

Like all Lepidoptera, Hippotion celerio undergoes complete metamorphosis:

Egg → Caterpillar → Pupa → Adult moth

The female lays eggs on suitable host plants.

After hatching, the caterpillar passes through several developmental stages and increases greatly in size.

Once fully grown, it enters the pupal stage. The adult hawk-moth eventually emerges from the pupa and begins the reproductive phase of the cycle.

In warm climates, development can proceed relatively rapidly when temperatures and food availability are favourable.

Migratory Behaviour

Hippotion celerio is particularly interesting because of its strong migratory behaviour.

It is capable of travelling considerable distances and regularly appears outside the regions where permanent populations are established.

Migrants can travel northwards into Europe, sometimes reaching Britain and even farther north.

Such records demonstrate the remarkable dispersal capabilities of the species.

Its migration also means that its abundance in a particular area may vary considerably from one year to another.

Geographical Distribution

Hippotion celerio has a very extensive distribution across the warmer regions of the Old World.

It occurs across large parts of Africa, the Mediterranean region, the Middle East and southern Asia, with its distribution extending farther east.

Migratory individuals regularly reach areas beyond the principal range, particularly in Europe.

This extensive distribution makes H. celerio one of the more widely occurring members of the Sphingidae.

Hippotion celerio in Cyprus

The Vine Hawk-moth occurs in Cyprus, where the warm Mediterranean climate provides favourable conditions for the species.

Cyprus is also geographically important for migratory insects because of its position in the eastern Mediterranean between Europe, Asia and Africa.

Adults may be encountered at night while visiting flowers and can also be attracted to artificial lights.

The presence of grapevines and numerous other suitable plants provides potential resources for the caterpillars.

Observations of Hippotion celerio in Cyprus are particularly interesting in relation to the wider study of migratory moths in the eastern Mediterranean.

Camouflage and Defence

The adult and caterpillar use different defensive strategies.

During daylight hours, the adult usually remains inactive. Its brown and olive-brown forewings help it blend with vegetation and other natural surfaces.

The more colourful hindwings remain largely concealed when the moth is resting.

The caterpillar relies heavily on camouflage but also possesses its striking eye-like markings.

When threatened, the anterior part of the caterpillar can appear surprisingly large, and the false eyes may give it an almost snake-like appearance. This can discourage some potential predators.

Ecological Role

Despite being best known for its impressive appearance and flight, Hippotion celerio also forms part of the ecological networks of the habitats in which it occurs.

The caterpillars consume plant material, while adults visit flowers for nectar.

Flower-visiting hawk-moths can contribute to pollen transfer between plants, particularly among flowers adapted to nocturnal visitors.

The eggs, caterpillars, pupae and adults can in turn provide food for predators and parasitoids.

Identification

Adult Hippotion celerio can often be recognised relatively easily compared with many smaller moths.

The combination of its long pointed forewings, streamlined body and prominent silvery-white stripe is particularly characteristic.

The pinkish areas of the hindwings provide an additional identification feature when the wings are open.

The caterpillar is also distinctive because of its large size, prominent false eyes and posterior horn.

Nevertheless, identification should always consider the complete combination of characters, particularly in regions where related Hippotion species may occur.

One of the Most Distinctive Hawk-moths

Hippotion celerio is an excellent example of the remarkable adaptations found among hawk-moths.

Its streamlined body and narrow wings make it an extremely capable flyer, while its migratory behaviour allows it to cross large geographical areas.

The adult's elegant silver-striped wings contrast with the dramatic appearance of the caterpillar, with its large false eyes and characteristic horn.

Together, these features make the Vine Hawk-moth one of the most recognisable and fascinating members of the Sphingidae found in the Mediterranean region.
