Σύμφωνα με την πιο πρόσφατη αναθεωρημένη απογραφή της BirdLife Cyprus, η Κύπρος διαθέτει 34 Σημαντικές Περιοχές για τα Πουλιά και τη Βιοποικιλότητα (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas – IBAs), οι οποίες καλύπτουν δάση, υγροτόπους, κοιλάδες, παράκτιες περιοχές, πεδιάδες και ορεινά οικοσυστήματα σε ολόκληρο το νησί.

Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι η τελευταία αναθεώρηση της BirdLife Cyprus αύξησε τις IBAs από 19 σε 34, ενσωματώνοντας πολλές νέες περιοχές, ιδιαίτερα στις κατεχόμενες περιοχές, χάρη στη συνεργασία της BirdLife Cyprus με την τουρκοκυπριακή οργάνωση KUŞKOR και σε εκτεταμένη επιτόπια έρευνα σε ολόκληρη την Κύπρο. 

Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) of Cyprus

The Republic of Cyprus is internationally recognised as one of the most important locations for migratory birds in the Eastern Mediterranean. Situated at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa, the island serves as a vital migration corridor for hundreds of bird species travelling between their breeding and wintering grounds.

According to the latest assessment by BirdLife Cyprus, the island contains 34 Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs). These sites include forests, wetlands, mountain ranges, coastal cliffs, agricultural landscapes, river valleys and salt lakes, each supporting species of national, regional and international conservation importance.

A Network of International Importance

Cyprus' IBAs support an extraordinary diversity of birdlife throughout the year. Many provide breeding habitat for resident and summer visitors, while others serve as essential stopover sites for millions of migratory birds crossing the Eastern Mediterranean.

The network protects habitats used by globally threatened species, raptors, waterbirds, seabirds, endemic species and numerous migratory passerines. Wetlands such as the Larnaca Salt Lakes, Oroklini Lake and the Mia Milia Sewage Lagoons are internationally recognised for their importance to wintering and migrating waterbirds. Mountain forests such as Troodos, Mahairas and Pafos Forest provide refuge for Cyprus' endemic birds and forest specialists, while the sea cliffs of Akamas, Cape Aspro and Episkopi support breeding seabirds and birds of prey.

The most recent revision by BirdLife Cyprus expanded the national IBA network from 19 to 34 sites, reflecting improved ornithological knowledge and extensive field surveys carried out across the island. The updated network provides a more comprehensive representation of Cyprus' most valuable habitats for birds and biodiversity.

Today, these 34 Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas form the backbone of bird conservation in Cyprus. They represent not only the island's richest wildlife habitats but also an essential link in one of the world's major migratory flyways, making their protection crucial for the conservation of bird populations across three continents.
