Σήμερα, η περιοχή αναγνωρίζεται ως μία από τις 34 Σημαντικές Περιοχές για τα Πουλιά και τη Βιοποικιλότητα στην Κυπρο - The 34 Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas in Cyprus – IBAs),της Κύπρου και αποτελεί πολύτιμο καταφύγιο για τη βιοποικιλότητα.

A few kilometres east of Nicosia, in the occupied area of Mia Milia (Haspolat), lies one of Cyprus' most important yet least known wetlands. Originally constructed as part of a wastewater treatment facility, the Mia Milia Sewage Lagoons were designed solely for the treatment of urban wastewater. Over the years, however, they have evolved into one of the island's most valuable artificial wetlands, providing refuge for thousands of waterbirds, reptiles, amphibians and countless other organisms.

Today, the site is recognised as one of Cyprus' 34 Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas in Cyprus – IBAs) and has become a vital sanctuary for biodiversity, demonstrating how carefully managed artificial wetlands can play a crucial role in nature conservation.

An Artificial Wetland of Exceptional Ecological Value

Although created for engineering purposes, the interconnected lagoons, extensive reed beds, shallow pools and muddy shorelines have gradually developed into a thriving wetland ecosystem closely resembling a natural marsh.

In the otherwise dry landscape of the Mesaoria Plain, the permanent availability of water provides ideal conditions for wildlife throughout the year. The dense reed beds offer secure nesting habitat, while the shallow waters support abundant aquatic life, supplying food for breeding, wintering and migrating birds.

Every year thousands of birds use the lagoons as a resting and feeding station during their migration between Europe, Asia and Africa, making Mia Milia one of the most significant wetlands in Cyprus for migratory species.

A Paradise for Birds

The Mia Milia lagoons support an impressive diversity of birdlife throughout the year. Some species breed within the wetland, others spend the winter there, while many remain only briefly during migration.

One of the site's greatest conservation successes is the Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca), a species classified globally as Near Threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Mia Milia supports one of the most important breeding populations of this species in Cyprus.

The shallow muddy margins provide ideal nesting sites for the elegant Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus), with its unmistakably long crimson legs, while the Spur-winged Lapwing (Vanellus spinosus), one of Cyprus' most characteristic wetland birds, breeds regularly within the area.

Many additional species have been recorded, including the Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea), Common Redshank (Tringa totanus), Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica), Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), numerous egrets, herons, sandpipers, gulls, terns, raptors and a wide variety of passerines, depending on the season.

The abundance and diversity of birds make Mia Milia one of the finest birdwatching locations on the island during migration.

The Freshwater Turtles of Mia Milia

The lagoons are equally important for reptiles, particularly the Balkan Terrapin (Mauremys rivulata), Cyprus' only native freshwater turtle.

Elsewhere on the island, populations of this species have declined due to wetland destruction, pollution and habitat fragmentation. At Mia Milia, however, the permanent water and abundant food have allowed an exceptionally large population to flourish.

Today, the lagoons are believed to support the largest known population of Balkan Terrapins in Cyprus, with hundreds of individuals inhabiting the ponds, channels and surrounding marshes.

On sunny days these turtles can often be seen basking on rocks, logs or concrete structures before quickly diving into the water when disturbed. Their diet consists of aquatic insects, amphibians, small fish, freshwater invertebrates and aquatic vegetation, making them an important component of the wetland ecosystem.

Other Wildlife

The constant availability of freshwater supports a rich community of frogs, dragonflies, damselflies, aquatic insects and small fish, all of which form the basis of the wetland food web.

These organisms in turn attract numerous herons, egrets, kingfishers and birds of prey. Mammals such as the Red Fox occasionally visit the lagoons, while feral and free-ranging domestic cats pose one of the greatest threats to ground-nesting birds by preying upon eggs and chicks.

The wetland also provides habitat for various reptiles, including water snakes and lizards commonly associated with freshwater environments.

Conservation Challenges

Despite its outstanding ecological importance, the Mia Milia wetland faces several significant threats.

Predation by feral cats continues to reduce the breeding success of many ground-nesting birds. At the same time, future modifications to the wastewater treatment system could alter water levels, vegetation structure and habitat quality, potentially affecting the wildlife that depends upon the lagoons.

Recognising these challenges, BirdLife Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot conservation organisation KUŞKOR have collaborated on habitat management and conservation projects aimed at improving breeding conditions, reducing threats and increasing public awareness of the site's environmental importance.

An Important Wetland Along a Global Migration Route

The Mia Milia Sewage Lagoons demonstrate how an artificial landscape can develop into an ecosystem of exceptional ecological significance.

Within only a few decades, a wastewater treatment facility has become one of Cyprus' most valuable wetlands, supporting rare waterbirds, freshwater turtles, amphibians and countless other species.

Its importance extends well beyond Cyprus. Situated along one of the principal migration corridors of the Eastern Mediterranean, the wetland serves as a vital stopover for thousands of birds travelling annually between Europe, Asia and Africa.

Protecting this remarkable ecosystem is therefore not only important for Cyprus but also contributes to the conservation of one of the Mediterranean's most important migratory flyways. It stands as a powerful example of nature's ability to reclaim and transform human-made landscapes into thriving centres of biodiversity.
