Σύμφωνα με το Plants of the World Online, η οικογένεια περιλαμβάνει 4 αποδεκτά γένη: Myricaria, Myrtama, Reaumuria και Tamarix.

The family Tamaricaceae, known as the tamarisk family, is a family of angiosperm plants belonging to the order Caryophyllales. It includes mainly shrubs and small trees adapted to dry, saline or seasonally flooded habitats.
According to Plants of the World Online, the family includes 4 accepted genera: Myricaria, Myrtama, Reaumuria and Tamarix. It includes approximately 120 species in total, of which 73 accepted species belong to the genus Tamarix.
The members of the family are distributed mainly in Europe, the Mediterranean region, Africa and western, central and southern Asia. Some species have been introduced and established on other continents.
In Cyprus, the family Tamaricaceae is represented by 1 genus and 5 native, non-endemic taxa, all belonging to the genus Tamarix.
General characteristics
The members of the family are usually perennial shrubs or small trees. They have numerous slender and flexible branches, which often create a light and open crown.
The leaves are very small, simple, alternate and usually scale-like. They lie close to the stems and significantly reduce the surface from which water can be lost.
In many species, specialized salt glands are present on the leaves. The glands remove excess salts from the plant tissues and excrete them onto the surface of the leaves and young stems.
The flowers are small, bisexual and radially symmetrical. They are usually white or pink and are grouped in dense racemes, which may be combined into larger branched inflorescences.
The calyx and corolla usually consist of 4 or 5 parts. There are generally 4, 5 or 10 stamens. The ovary is superior and is usually formed by 3 to 5 fused carpels.
The fruit is a small capsule that opens at maturity. It contains numerous very small seeds bearing a tuft of fine hairs at the tip.
Habitats in Cyprus
Species of the genus Tamarix occur mainly in coastal, riparian and wetland habitats. They grow in salt lakes, salt marshes, coastal depressions, sandy or gravelly shores, riverbeds and streambeds, moist valleys and along the margins of reservoirs.
Some species can survive in soils with high salinity, where many other woody plants cannot grow. Others are more closely associated with seasonally wet or flooded soils along rivers and streams.
The roots can penetrate deeply or spread over a large area, allowing the plants to use underground or seasonally available moisture.
Taxa of the family Tamaricaceae in Cyprus
According to the organized checklist of the flora of Cyprus, 5 native, non-endemic taxa, belonging to 1 genus, are recorded in Cyprus.
Native, non-endemic taxa
Tamarix
- Tamarix dalmatica B.R.Baum — Species
- Tamarix hampeana Boiss. & Heldr. — Species
- Tamarix smyrnensis Bunge — Species aggregate
- Tamarix tetragyna Ehrenb. — Species

No endemic, alien, hybrid or uncertain-presence taxa of the family are recorded in Cyprus.
Identification of the species
The identification of species of the genus Tamarix is often difficult. The morphological characteristics used include:
- the number of floral parts,
- the number and arrangement of the stamens,
- the shape and length of the bracts,
- the form of the floral disc,
- the length of the pedicels,
- and the position and season of development of the inflorescences.
Many of these characteristics are very small and require the examination of mature flowering material under magnification. The form of the plant, the colour of the flowers or the habitat is not always sufficient for reliable identification.
Tamarix smyrnensis is recorded in the Cypriot checklist as a species aggregate, reflecting the taxonomic and identification difficulties presented by this group.
Ecology
Species of the genus Tamarix are characteristic components of the coastal and riparian ecosystems of Cyprus. They can form dense stands along watercourses, around wetlands and on saline plains.
The stands provide shade, shelter and nesting sites for birds. They also provide protection for reptiles, small mammals and numerous invertebrates.
The flowers produce pollen and nectar and attract bees, flies and other insects. Because each plant can produce a very large number of small flowers, flowering stands constitute an important seasonal food source for pollinators.
The dense root system holds the soil, limits erosion along banks and contributes to the stabilization of sandy, gravelly or muddy substrates.
Reproduction and dispersal
Reproduction takes place mainly by seeds. The small flowers are pollinated by insects, although wind may also contribute to pollen transfer over short distances.
The mature capsules release numerous microscopic seeds. The tuft of hairs at the tip of each seed allows it to be transported by wind.
The seeds can also be transported by water along rivers, streams and flooded areas. Successful germination usually requires a moist, open substrate with limited competition from other plants.
Many species can also reproduce vegetatively from stem or root fragments. Branches transported by water may take root when deposited on moist soil.
Adaptations to salinity and drought
Salt glands constitute one of the most important adaptations of the family. The plant absorbs water that may contain high concentrations of salts and removes part of the excess onto the surface of the leaves.
The small scale-like leaves limit transpiration and reduce water loss. The green young stems contribute significantly to photosynthesis, compensating for the small surface area of the leaves.
The deep and extensive root system provides access to underground moisture during the dry period. At the same time, the flexible stems withstand strong coastal winds and temporary covering by water or sediment.
Ecological and economic importance
Species of the genus Tamarix contribute to the stabilization of coasts, sand dunes, banks and flood deposits. Their vegetation limits erosion and creates suitable conditions for the establishment of other organisms.
Their stands are highly important for wetland fauna. They provide nesting and resting sites for resident and migratory birds and function as shelters in open or exposed landscapes.
Some species are cultivated as ornamental plants or used in plantings for wind protection, soil stabilization and the restoration of saline or dry areas.
In regions outside their natural distribution, certain Tamarix species have become invasive. This should not be confused with the natural ecological role of the native species of Cyprus.
Tamarix hampeana in Cyprus
Tamarix hampeana is a particularly important component of the Cypriot flora. In the Flora of Cyprus, it is classified as a native, non-endemic species and is assessed as Endangered (EN) under criterion D1.
This assessment is associated with the very small size of the known Cypriot population. The protection of its locations and the avoidance of interventions that alter the hydrological regime are particularly important.
Because of the difficulty of identifying Tamarix species, population monitoring must be based on confirmed taxonomic identification.
Threats and protection
The most important threats include wetland drainage, coastal development, river regulation and dredging, construction works within riverbeds, waste dumping and the removal of riparian vegetation.
Groundwater extraction and alteration of the natural flow of rivers and streams can reduce available moisture. Conversely, prolonged artificial flooding can also alter habitats and natural regeneration.
The mistaken removal of native tamarisks as unwanted vegetation can destroy important nesting locations and increase bank erosion.
The protection of wetlands, salt lakes, natural shores and riparian vegetation, together with the monitoring of rare populations, is essential for the conservation of the family in Cyprus.
