Sarax ioanniticus (Kritscher, 1959), formerly Charinus ioanniticus – An unusual arachnid of Cyprus and its first confirmed record
Text by George Konstantinou
A distinctive member of the fauna of Cyprus
Sarax ioanniticus (Kritscher, 1959) is an arachnid belonging to the order Amblypygi, a group characterised by flattened bodies and exceptionally slender, elongated front legs. The English names whip spiders and tailless whip scorpions refer to members of this order. Despite these names, amblypygids form a separate group from the spiders of Cyprus.
Its unusual appearance, nocturnal activity and use of sheltered locations explain why it can occur in an area without being readily observed.
Scientific name and taxonomic history
Kritscher described the species in 1959, from Rhodes, as Lindosiella ioannitica. The combination Charinus ioanniticus was used subsequently and appears in many earlier publications.
In the systematic revision by Miranda and colleagues in 2021, it was transferred to the genus Sarax. This change concerns the taxonomic placement of the same species.
Older literature places it in the family Charinidae. Following the merger of Charinidae and Charontidae in the more recent classification, the family name Charontidae is used.
Morphology and identification
The body consists of the prosoma and a visibly segmented abdomen. Its flattened form facilitates occupation of narrow crevices.
The first pair of legs has been modified into long sensory appendages. The animal uses them to explore its surroundings and detect stimuli. The remaining three pairs serve for locomotion. In front of the body are the pedipalps, spiny appendages used to capture prey.
Recognising the order from a good photograph is easier than reliably identifying the species. Distinguishing related species requires examination of fine morphological characters and use of a scientific identification key. General resemblance alone is insufficient for definitive identification.
Geographical distribution
The species is known from the eastern Mediterranean and neighbouring regions. Published records include Rhodes, Symi, Kos and mainland Greece, as well as Turkey, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Italy and Cyprus. It is not endemic to Cyprus.
Habitat and association with people
It is associated with humid, sheltered microhabitats, including caves and crevices. It can also occur in buildings, including bathrooms and other spaces offering suitable conditions. This association with human structures is described as synanthropy.
Its occurrence in caves does not mean that it lives exclusively underground. Records from buildings demonstrate its ability to use different types of shelter.
Behaviour and diet
It is a nocturnal predator of small invertebrates. The sensory front legs help explore the surroundings, while the pedipalps restrain prey.
In a published captive observation of a juvenile from Athens, small invertebrates, including springtails and insect larvae, were offered as food. Such observations contribute to understanding its diet without providing a complete list of its natural prey.
Reproduction and development
A particularly interesting biological feature is parthenogenesis: females can produce offspring without fertilisation. This ability has been scientifically documented in the species.
Growth involves moulting, during which the old exoskeleton is shed. Moulting was also recorded in a juvenile from Athens maintained for observation. Published information is insufficient to provide specific figures for lifespan, breeding season or reproductive output in Cypriot populations.
A genetic study published in 2022 confirmed that Sarax ioanniticus and the related Sarax israelensis are distinct species. Consequently, information about the biology of the latter should not automatically be applied to the former.
The first confirmed record in Cyprus
The first confirmation was based on an adult female found by Christos Zoumides on 2 July 2023, on a garden wall in Pissouri. The paper was published on 10 July 2025.
An earlier report of amblypygids from Agios Neofytos dated from 1990. Additional observations come from Tsada, Paphos and Lapithos , but not all have been confirmed to species level. George Konstantinou and Jakovos Demetriou are acknowledged in the paper.
Danger to humans
Amblypygids lack venom glands and a sting. They do not construct prey-catching webs. The animal’s striking appearance does not indicate dangerousness.
Observing it without unnecessary handling protects both the animal and its exceptionally delicate sensory legs.
Current knowledge in Cyprus
The recent confirmation does not establish when the species arrived on the island. Nor is it sufficient to classify it as alien. More information is needed about its actual distribution, abundance and ecology in Cyprus.
