Για το Idaea distinctaria δεν έχουν εντοπιστεί επαρκώς τεκμηριωμένα συγκεκριμένα δεδομένα προνυμφικών φυτών-ξενιστών στον ενημερωμένο Taxonomic Dynamic Checklist of Moths of Cyprus.

Στον ενημερωμένο Taxonomic Dynamic Checklist of Moths of Cyprus, το Idaea distinctaria καταγράφεται με IUCN 2026: LC – Least Concern (Μειωμένου Ενδιαφέροντος) τόσο για την Ευρώπη όσο και για την ΕΕ των 27.

Idaea distinctaria (Boisduval, 1840) – Cyprus

Text by George Konstantinou.

Description and identification

Idaea distinctaria (Boisduval, 1840) is a small moth belonging to the family Geometridae and subfamily Sterrhinae. It belongs to the large genus Idaea, which contains numerous small geometrid moths, several of which share a similar general appearance and require careful examination for reliable identification.

The wings of I. distinctaria are generally pale whitish, cream to softly ochre-pink, with fine transverse lines and small discal dots. The intensity of the markings and coloration can vary between individuals. Both forewings and hindwings have the delicate appearance characteristic of many Sterrhinae.

The morphological similarity between related Idaea species means that identification should not be based on a single colour character. Examination of the genitalia may be required for reliable determination of difficult, worn or ambiguous specimens.

Distribution

Idaea distinctaria is principally a western Palaearctic and Mediterranean species. Its distribution includes parts of southern Europe and the Mediterranean and extends eastwards through Asia Minor into the Middle East.

It has been recorded from France, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and mainland Italy, Switzerland, parts of the Balkans, Greece, Crete, Rhodes, Cyprus, Turkey, Israel, Palestine, Jordan and Egypt.

This geographical pattern indicates a species characteristically associated with the warmer regions of the Mediterranean and its eastern basin.

Presence in Cyprus

Idaea distinctaria is a native [N] species of Cyprus, and its occurrence on the island is well documented by both historical and more recent collected material.

A published study of the Cypriot Geometridae reports specimens from numerous parts of the island. Documented localities include Karmi, Kakopetria in the Troodos Mountains, an area south of Lania at approximately 600 m, Paphos, the Limassol Salt Lake area and Larnaca Salt Lake.

Dates associated with these historical specimens range from late March and spring through July, August and October. The records therefore demonstrate adult occurrence in Cyprus across a substantial part of the warmer period of the year.

A further study of the geometrid moths of northern Cyprus recorded the species at Kyrenia on 13 May 2002 and 6 June 2003 and at Lefka on 9 May 2002. The geographical spread of published records demonstrates that the species is not restricted to a single part of the island.

Habitat and ecology

The Mediterranean distribution of Idaea distinctaria and its Cypriot records from coastal and lowland areas to moderate elevations indicate that the species can occupy a range of warm and relatively dry habitats.

Cyprus records include coastal and lowland environments, such as the Larnaca and Limassol salt-lake areas and Paphos, as well as inland and more elevated localities such as Karmi, Kakopetria and Lania. This occurrence across different elevations and landscapes indicates a degree of ecological flexibility.

Like many Sterrhinae, adults are nocturnal and can be encountered at artificial light during nocturnal surveys.

Host plants and larval feeding

For Idaea distinctaria, no sufficiently documented specific larval host-plant data have been identified in the updated Taxonomic Dynamic Checklist of Moths of Cyprus.

More general literature references state that the larva feeds on flowers of herbaceous plants, but without sufficiently clear and documented identification of particular plant taxa to justify a reliable host list.

For this reason, no particular plant species or plant families are attributed to the moth here without adequate supporting evidence.

Life cycle and seasonality

Like all Lepidoptera, Idaea distinctaria undergoes complete metamorphosis through four principal stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult.

Published Cypriot records provide useful evidence concerning adult seasonality on the island. Specimens have been recorded from 26 March–2 April, through early and mid-May, June and July, August and into October.

This broad range of dates suggests a prolonged adult occurrence under Cypriot climatic conditions and is compatible with the possibility of more than one generation per year. However, without a dedicated Cypriot study of the complete life cycle, a specific number of annual generations should not be assigned.

Historical records in Cyprus

Research on the Geometridae of Cyprus provides particularly useful information on Idaea distinctaria. Published material includes records from:

  • Karmi – 9/5/1974

  • Kakopetria, Troodos – 13/10/1994

  • South of Lania, approximately 600 m – records including 19/10/1989

  • Paphos, approximately 100 m – 29/4–13/5/1994 and 26/3–2/4/1995

  • Salt lake west of Limassol – 8/8/1983

  • Larnaca Salt Lake – 3–7/8/1981 and 13–14/7/1981

The same scientific study reported that the male and female genitalia of the Cypriot material corresponded well with examined populations from Italy, Sicily, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Israel and Jordan, providing important morphological confirmation of the identity of the Cyprus material.

Taxonomic history

The species was described by Jean Baptiste Alphonse Dechauffour de Boisduval in 1840 as Acidalia distinctaria. It was subsequently transferred to the genus Idaea, which is why the author's name and year are now correctly enclosed in parentheses: Idaea distinctaria (Boisduval, 1840).

The type locality of the original description is given as Provence, France.

Older literature also includes the names Idaea ruficostata (Zeller, 1849) and incarnaria Herrich-Schäffer, 1852, which are now associated with the synonymy of I. distinctaria.

Conservation status

In the updated Taxonomic Dynamic Checklist of Moths of Cyprus, Idaea distinctaria is recorded as IUCN 2026: LC – Least Concern for both Europe and the EU27.

LC indicates that, under the corresponding European assessment, the species does not meet the criteria for placement in a higher extinction-risk category. The European assessment should not be interpreted as a measure of the species' local abundance in Cyprus.
