Lamoria melanophlebia is a moth belonging to the family Pyralidae, subfamily Galleriinae and tribe Tirathabini. The name is used for records from Cyprus and the Caucasus region, although its status as a separate species remains disputed. It is included in the checklist of the moths of Cyprus.

Scientific name and taxonomy

Émile-Louis Ragonot described Lamoria melanophlebia in 1888, on pages 51–52 of Nouveaux genres et espèces de Phycitidae & Galleriidae. The original description concerns a male from the eastern Caucasus. The author and year are written without parentheses because the original genus remains unchanged.

Leraut (2014) treated it as a synonym of Lamoria anella. Lepiforum provisionally retains a separate entry, recommending comparative genital examination and DNA analysis. Its Cypriot photographs are assigned to L. melanophlebia geographically, rather than through demonstrated photographic separation.

No established species-specific English or Greek common name was found.

Description and identification

The original description gives a wingspan of 28 mm for the male described. This measurement should not be presented as a documented size range for the entire population.

The forewings are described as rust-coloured, with a greyish to reddish area below the discal cell and black streaks along the veins. The transverse lines are reddish grey, while the hindwings are yellowish.

Ragonot compared the species with Lamoria ruficostella, highlighting differences in the black markings along the veins and the colour of the hindwings. These are historical diagnostic characters that must be considered alongside the later taxonomic dispute.

Distribution and occurrence in Cyprus

Savela’s bibliographic catalogue lists the Caucasus and Syria. The distribution attributed to the name also depends on whether L. melanophlebia is interpreted narrowly or included within the broader concept of L. anella.

The name has a long history in Cypriot literature. In a paper published in 1938 about collections made in Cyprus during 1920 and 1921, Kenneth J. Hayward reported Lamoria melanophlebia from Platres on 11 July. That individual entry does not specify the collection year. The same paper also lists L. jordanis and L. anella, following the taxonomy used at the time.

The photographs accompanying this account were taken at Geri on 8 October 2014. Lepiforum additionally lists assignments from Chandria–Adelfoi, 1 October 2016, near Kyrenia, 12 May 2017, and Mandria, Paphos, 8 April 2022, subject to the identification caveat explained above.

Biology, larval hosts and parasitoids

No adequately documented information was found linking a particular host plant or other food substrate to larvae securely identified as Lamoria melanophlebia. Likewise, no confirmed association with a named parasitoid was found.

There are insufficient verified data to give the number of generations, overwintering stage, development time or a complete description of the immature stages. Information published for related species requires separate evidence before it can be attributed to this particular name.

The observation dates provide individual records of adult occurrence. They are insufficient to establish a continuous flight period or the number of generations in Cyprus.
