Brachycerus sp. – Cyprus
Text by George Konstantinou.
This record concerns a beetle of the genus Brachycerus, a group of robust, ground-dwelling weevils. The abbreviation “sp.” means that identification has reached genus level, without determining the species. It is not a species name and does not necessarily indicate a species unknown to science.
The genus was described by Guillaume-Antoine Olivier in 1789. Entomological literature places it either in the family Brachyceridae or within the broader family Curculionidae, in the subfamily Brachycerinae, depending on the classification adopted.
Morphology and movement
Brachycerus have a robust, usually oval or almost globular body, a short, thick rostrum and short antennae lacking the characteristic “elbow” of many other weevils.
The elytra bear pronounced sculpturing, with tubercles, ridges and depressions. They are fused together, while the hind wings are absent, so these beetles move by walking.
The body may appear brown or grey because of adhering soil. Wear of the hairs and scales also affects its appearance and can make identification more difficult.
Occurrence in Cyprus
Several species of the genus occur in Cyprus. Gabriel Alziar’s 2023 checklist includes confirmed records of Brachycerus argillaceus, B. cribrarius, B. makrisi and B. sinuatus, alongside other names carrying different annotations.
The blog separately presents Brachycerus argillaceus. The present record remains Brachycerus sp. and is not automatically identified as that or any other Cypriot species.
The photographs were taken at Larnakas tis Lapithou on 30 January 2015, by George Konstantinou. The date documents the presence of an adult during winter.
Feeding and association with geophytes
The biology of the genus is closely associated with geophytes, plants possessing underground survival organs such as bulbs or tubers. The larvae of different species develop in the soil or within underground plant organs.
Documented hosts of the genus include plants belonging to Amaryllidaceae, Araceae, Asparagaceae, Iridaceae, Liliaceae and Orchidaceae. These relationships differ between species and do not mean that every Brachycerus uses all these families.
No particular host plant has been established for the present record.
Reproduction and development
Brachycerus undergo complete metamorphosis, passing through egg, larval, pupal and adult stages. Egg-laying in the group is described as taking place in the soil rather than directly within plant tissues.
The larvae exploit underground plant resources. Published accounts of the genus’ life history describe mature larvae leaving the bulb and pupating in an earthen chamber.
Development time, egg-laying season and the number of generations cannot be assigned to this particular individual without identifying its species.
Why careful identification matters
Species identification relies on a combination of features of the rostrum, pronotum and elytral sculpturing. Soil, wear and natural variation can noticeably alter external appearance.
Retaining “sp.” accurately represents the level of identification. It also prevents the photographed beetle from being assigned properties of a particular species, such as endemism, agricultural pest status or a conservation category.
