Amphicerus bimaculatus (Olivier, 1790) – Grape Cane Borer – Cyprus

Former name: Schistoceros bimaculatus

Text by George Konstantinou.

Amphicerus bimaculatus is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Bostrichidae. It is associated mainly with Mediterranean woody plants, particularly grapevines and tamarisks. Older literature frequently refers to it as Schistoceros bimaculatus, while the English name Grape Cane Borer reflects its association with grapevine wood.

It was described in 1790 by the French entomologist Guillaume-Antoine Olivier, originally as Bostrichus bimaculatus, from Provence in southern France.

Description and identification

Adults have an elongated, cylindrical body approximately 11–18 millimetres long. They are black to brownish-black, with brown or brownish-yellow antennae, palps and tarsi.

The small head is concealed by the large pronotum when viewed from above. Areas of long, white, flattened hairs occur along the sides of the pronotum.

Distribution and occurrence in Cyprus

The species has a broad Mediterranean distribution extending into the Middle East, the Caucasus region and Central Asia. It is not endemic to Cyprus.

The photographs accompanying this post were taken at Potamia on 8 April 2015, by George Konstantinou.

Further species are presented in the Organized checklist of Coleoptera of Cyprus.

Hosts and habitats

Larval development takes place mainly in dead or dying wood of grapevines, Vitis, and tamarisks, Tamarix. Other published hosts include fig, olive, almond, apple, pomegranate and various citrus plants.

Its occurrence is therefore associated with natural woody vegetation, vineyards and orchards. International host records do not all represent confirmed associations from Cyprus.

Italian observations recorded development in old pruning material and neglected vines, followed by attacks on neighbouring newly planted vines. Pruning residues can consequently provide a developmental substrate near crops.

Feeding and attacks on living plants

The larvae consume woody tissues. Adults can also bore into living branches, often near buds, causing wilting and weakening of affected parts.

An infestation of newly planted pomegranates was documented at Vrontou, Pieria, in 2011. Holes and expelled boring material were observed near buds, together with foliage discolouration. Published in 2016, this record concerns Greece rather than confirmed equivalent damage in Cyprus.

Reproduction and life cycle

The species undergoes complete metamorphosis, passing through egg, larval, pupal and adult stages. Agricultural literature generally describes it as having one generation annually and overwintering as an adult.

Reproduction is associated with the selection of suitable wood. Larvae develop inside it, and pupation takes place within a gallery.

A 2015 master’s study in Palmela, Portugal, observed feeding, host exploration for breeding and the species’ eggs. The work also considered possible local differences in the number of annual generations, highlighting the need to investigate development under the conditions of each region.

Monitoring in crops

Searching for holes, boring material and infested pruning residues provides a useful means of detection. The Portuguese study confirmed its presence by examining grapevine pruning residues.

In contrast, the particular flight traps tested caught no individuals. The researchers considered either trap ineffectiveness or sampling outside the flight period as possible explanations. An absence of captures therefore does not necessarily demonstrate an absence of the insect.

Conservation

In the 2010 European Red List of Saproxylic Beetles, Amphicerus bimaculatus was classified as Least Concern (LC) for both Europe and the European Union of 27 member states at that time.

This regional assessment concerns extinction risk. It does not negate the potential for local crop damage, nor does it constitute a specific assessment of Cypriot populations.
