Ο Ιερός Ναός Αποστόλου Ανδρέα
Ο Ιερός Ναός Αποστόλου Ανδρέα βρίσκεται στο κέντρο του κατεχόμενου χωριού Πάναγρα της επαρχίας Κερύνειας και αποτελούσε την κύρια ενοριακή εκκλησία της κοινότητας πριν από την τουρκική εισβολή του 1974 και τον εκτοπισμό των Ελληνοκυπρίων κατοίκων της. Η Εκκλησία της Κύπρου καταγράφει επίσημα για τα Πάναγρα ως κύρια εκκλησία τον Απόστολο Ανδρέα και ως εξωκλήσι τον Άγιο Γεώργιο.
Ο ναός είναι αφιερωμένος στον Απόστολο Ανδρέα τον Πρωτόκλητο, έναν από τους Δώδεκα Αποστόλους και αδελφό του Αποστόλου Πέτρου. Η ιδιαίτερη τιμή προς τον Απόστολο Ανδρέα είναι βαθιά ριζωμένη στην κυπριακή θρησκευτική παράδοση και απαντά σε πολλές εκκλησίες και προσκυνήματα σε ολόκληρο το νησί.
Η εκκλησία και η ζωή της κοινότητας
Η εκκλησία αποτελούσε το σημαντικότερο θρησκευτικό σημείο αναφοράς των κατοίκων των Πανάγρων. Σύμφωνα με την Ένωση Κοινοτήτων Επαρχίας Κερύνειας και την παλαιότερη καταγραφή της κοινότητας, κάθε χρόνο στις 30 Νοεμβρίου, ημέρα της μνήμης του Αποστόλου Ανδρέα, τελούνταν στο χωριό μεγάλη και λαμπρή γιορτή. Η πανήγυρη συγκέντρωνε την κοινότητα γύρω από τον ενοριακό ναό και αποτελούσε σημαντικό γεγονός της θρησκευτικής και κοινωνικής ζωής των Πανάγρων.
Η παρουσία του ναού μαζί με το εξωκλήσι του Αγίου Γεωργίου δείχνει τη θέση που κατείχε η Ορθόδοξη λατρεία στην καθημερινή ζωή της μικρής αγροτικής κοινότητας. Ο Απόστολος Ανδρέας ήταν ο κεντρικός ναός του οικισμού, ενώ ο Άγιος Γεώργιος αποτελούσε τον δεύτερο καταγεγραμμένο χώρο λατρείας μέσα στα όρια της κοινότητας.
Χρονολόγηση και θέση του ναού
Η ευρωπαϊκή βάση δεδομένων θρησκευτικής κληρονομιάς Religiana τοποθετεί την ανέγερση του σημερινού κτιρίου στις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα και επιβεβαιώνει ότι βρίσκεται στο μικρό κέντρο του χωριού. Η καταγραφή αυτή αφορά το σημερινό σωζόμενο οικοδόμημα του Αποστόλου Ανδρέα.
Τα Πάναγρα βρίσκονται περίπου 24 χιλιόμετρα δυτικά της πόλης της Κερύνειας, κοντά στη δυτική όχθη του χειμάρρου Παλιόμυλος–Πάναγρα και σε μέσο υψόμετρο περίπου 40 μέτρων. Ο ναός, επομένως, βρισκόταν στον πυρήνα ενός μικρού οικισμού που συνδεόταν στενά με το αγροτικό τοπίο της βορειοδυτικής Κερύνειας.
Μετά την τουρκική εισβολή του 1974
Μετά την τουρκική εισβολή του 1974, όλοι οι Ελληνοκύπριοι κάτοικοι των Πανάγρων εκτοπίστηκαν και ο ναός έπαψε να λειτουργεί ως η ενοριακή εκκλησία της κοινότητας στον φυσικό της χώρο. Τα Πάναγρα βρίσκονται έκτοτε στο κατεχόμενο τμήμα της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας.
Η μεταγενέστερη χρήση του ναού είναι τεκμηριωμένη και από πηγές των Ηνωμένων Εθνών. Σε έγγραφο που υποβλήθηκε στον ΟΗΕ το 1998 καταγράφεται ότι η Εκκλησία του Αποστόλου Ανδρέα στα Πάναγρα είχε μετατραπεί σε τζαμί. Παρόμοια καταγραφή περιλαμβάνεται και σε έκθεση του 2002 για θρησκευτικά μνημεία στις κατεχόμενες περιοχές.
Η σύγχρονη ευρωπαϊκή βάση θρησκευτικής κληρονομιάς Religiana εξακολουθεί να καταγράφει το κτίριο ως την πρώην Apostolos Andreas Church, Panagra, η οποία χρησιμοποιείται ως μουσουλμανικός χώρος λατρείας με την ονομασία Şht. Allahverdi Kılıç Cami. Έτσι, το αρχικό εκκλησιαστικό κτίριο έχει διατηρηθεί ως οικοδόμημα, αλλά η χρήση του έχει μεταβληθεί μετά την κατοχή.
Ο Απόστολος Ανδρέας και η κυπριακή παράδοση
Ο Απόστολος Ανδρέας κατέχει ξεχωριστή θέση στη θρησκευτική παράδοση της Κύπρου. Η Εκκλησία της Κύπρου τιμά ιδιαίτερα τον Πρωτόκλητο Απόστολο, ενώ το όνομά του συνδέεται με μεγάλο αριθμό εκκλησιών και προσκυνημάτων στο νησί. Η αφιέρωση της κύριας εκκλησίας των Πανάγρων στον Απόστολο Ανδρέα εντάσσεται σε αυτή τη μακραίωνη κυπριακή παράδοση λατρείας προς τον Άγιο.
Για τους εκτοπισμένους κατοίκους των Πανάγρων, ο ναός παραμένει μέρος της θρησκευτικής και πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς του χωριού και συνδέεται με τις μνήμες της ετήσιας γιορτής της 30ής Νοεμβρίου και της κοινοτικής ζωής πριν από το 1974.

The Church of Apostolos Andreas
The Church of Apostolos Andreas stands in the centre of the occupied village of Panagra in Kyrenia District and was the principal parish church of the community before the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 and the displacement of its Greek Cypriot inhabitants. The Church of Cyprus officially records Apostolos Andreas as the main church of Panagra and Agios Georgios as the chapel belonging to the community.
The church is dedicated to Saint Andrew the First-Called, one of the Twelve Apostles and brother of the Apostle Peter. Saint Andrew occupies a particularly important place in Cypriot Orthodox tradition, with numerous churches and pilgrimage sites dedicated to him throughout the island.
The church and community life
The church was the principal religious focal point of the inhabitants of Panagra. According to the Union of Communities of Kyrenia District and historical information preserved about the village, the feast of Saint Andrew was celebrated with particular solemnity every year on 30 November. The annual feast brought the community together around its parish church and formed an important event in the religious and social life of Panagra.
Together with the chapel of Agios Georgios, the parish church reflects the important role of Orthodox worship in the life of this small rural community. Apostolos Andreas was the principal church within the settlement, while Agios Georgios was the second documented place of worship within the boundaries of Panagra.
Dating and location
The European religious-heritage database Religiana dates the present church building to the beginning of the 20th century and records its position in the small centre of the village. This dating refers to the surviving building of the Church of Apostolos Andreas.
Panagra lies approximately 24 kilometres west of Kyrenia, near the western bank of the Paliomylos–Panagra stream, at an average elevation of about 40 metres. The church therefore occupied the centre of a small settlement closely associated with the rural landscape of western Kyrenia District.
After the Turkish invasion of 1974
Following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, all Greek Cypriot inhabitants of Panagra were displaced and the church ceased to function as the parish church of the community in its historic setting. Panagra has since remained within the occupied part of the Republic of Cyprus.
The later use of the building is documented in United Nations records. A document submitted to the UN in 1998 recorded that the Church of Apostolos Andreas at Panagra had been converted into a mosque. The same status was subsequently recorded in documentation concerning religious monuments in the occupied areas published in 2002.
The contemporary European religious-heritage database Religiana continues to identify the building as the former Apostolos Andreas Church, Panagra, now used as a Muslim place of worship under the name Şht. Allahverdi Kılıç Cami. The original church building therefore survives, although its religious use was changed after the occupation.
Saint Andrew and Cyprus
Saint Andrew has a particularly important place in the religious traditions of Cyprus. The Church of Cyprus maintains a strong tradition of devotion to the First-Called Apostle, whose name is associated with numerous churches and pilgrimage sites throughout the island. The dedication of the principal church of Panagra to Saint Andrew forms part of this long-established Cypriot tradition.
For the displaced inhabitants of Panagra, the church remains part of the religious and cultural heritage of their village and is closely associated with memories of the annual feast of 30 November and with community life before 1974.
