Η κατεχόμενη Μονή Αποστόλου Βαρνάβα ιδρυτή της Εκκλησίας της Κύπρου - The Turkish occupied Monastery of St. Barnabas

Σε απόσταση 100 μέτρων προς τα ανατολικά του Μοναστηριού του Αποστόλου Βαρνάβα βρίσκεται λαξευτός τάφος της ρωμαϊκής περιόδου που θεωρείται ως ο τάφος του Αποστόλου Βαρνάβα, σημέρα βεβαια άδειος. Ακριβώς γι αυτό κατέστη προσκυνηματικό κέντρο και διακοσμήθηκε με τοιχογραφίες, οι οποίες όμως ως επί το πλείστον καταστάφηκαν. Το 75 μ.Χ. ο Απόστολος Βαρνάβας εκοιμήθη εν Κυρίω και οι μαθητές του και ο Μάρκος τον έθαψαν κρυφά σε αυτό το τάφο και έφυγαν από το νησί κυνηγημένοι. Μαζί με το λείψανο του Αποστόλου Βαρνάβα έθαψαν και το χειρόγραφο Ευαγγέλιο του Ματθαίου, ενός από τους τέσσερις Ευαγγελιστές.

Με την βοήθεια μιας σκάλας κατεβαίνει κανείς προς τον τάφο, όπου ανοίχθηκε πηγή για να πέρουν αγίασμα οι προσκυνητές. Εδώ, στο στήθος του λειψάνου του Αποστόλου Βαρνάβα ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Ανθέμιος βρήκε το αντίγραφο του Κατά Ματθαίον Ευαγγελίου γραμμένο με το χέρι του ιδίου του Αποστόλου Βαρνάβα. Ο Απόστολος Βαρνάβας υπέστη μαρτυρικό θάνατο κατά τη διάρκεια του προσηλυτισμού των ειδωλολατρών και των παλαιών Εβραίων συντρόφων του. Βασανίστηκε και λιθοβολήθηκε μέχρι θανάτου από τους Εβραίους στη γενέτειρα του Σαλαμίνα.

About a 100 meters to the east of the monastery a carved out tomb of the Roman period which is regarded as the tomb of Saint Barnabas, is to be found but which is now empty of course. Precisely for this reason it became a pilgrimage center and was decorated with murals, but they are now mostly ruined. In 75 A.D. Apostle Barnabas passed away to the Lord and his disciples and Mark buried him secretly in this grave and left the island after being chased after. Together with the relics of the Apostle Barnabas the manuscript of the Gospel of Matthew, one of the four Evangelists was also buried.

With the help of a staircase one descends to the tomb, where a water spring was opened so that the pilgrims could take Holy Water. Here, on the chest of the relics of Saint Barnabas Archbishop Anthemios found the copy of the Gospel of Matthew written by the hand of the Apostle Barnabas. Barnabas had been martyred during the conversion of the pagans and the Jews, his old comrades. He was tortured and stoned to death by Jews in his birthplace of Salamis.
