Panagia Chrysotrimithiotissa

Panagia Chrysotrimithiotissa is located near the occupied village of Trimithi in Kyrenia District, on the northern side of the Pentadaktylos mountain range. Trimithi was an entirely Greek Cypriot village whose inhabitants were displaced following the Turkish invasion of 1974.

Chrysotrimithiotissa was not the main church of the village; the principal church of Trimithi was Agios Charalambos. Panagia Chrysotrimithiotissa was a chapel of the community and an important place of worship for its inhabitants. The Church of Cyprus officially records it among the Christian monuments of Trimithi.

The earlier Byzantine church

The surviving monument is associated with an earlier church. The Union of Communities of Kyrenia District records that Panagia Chrysotrimithiotissa was built on the site of a small Byzantine church that was subsequently extended, while the Department of Antiquities identifies the monument as dating to the Middle Byzantine period.

This information is significant because it documents the long historical presence of the Christian monument in the area of Trimithi.

The tradition of the icon and the terebinth tree

An old local tradition is associated with Panagia Chrysotrimithiotissa. According to an account published by the Church of Cyprus, there was a cave near the entrance to the village in which an icon of the Virgin Mary was found. A large terebinth tree (trimithia in the Cypriot dialect) stood in front of the cave, and the name Chrysotrimithiotissa is traditionally associated with this tree.

The same tradition relates that the villagers attempted to transfer the icon to the village church, but during the night the icon would return to the cave. This account belongs to the religious and folk tradition of the community and should not be regarded as a historically verified event.

Before 1974, a large religious festival was held at Chrysotrimithiotissa on Easter Monday.

The fate of the church after 1974

Following the Turkish invasion and occupation of 1974, Panagia Chrysotrimithiotissa underwent a serious change of use.

The Department of Antiquities of the Republic of Cyprus reports that by 1992 the church had already been converted into an “art gallery and Cypriot craft centre”. It further records that on 6 April 1996, an advertisement appeared in the Turkish Cypriot newspaper Cyprus Today offering the church on a leasehold basis for £32,500.

The House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus has also documented the case of Chrysotrimithiotissa, reporting that the church, together with its cemetery, was offered to foreigners through a British estate agency and was converted into a painting workshop.

The Church of Cyprus has likewise published photographic and archival documentation concerning the monument following the occupation, including references to attempts to dispose of the property and its subsequent change of use.

Panagia Chrysotrimithiotissa therefore represents not only an old Christian monument of Kyrenia District but also an important testimony to the history and religious memory of the displaced community of Trimithi.
