The Church of Agios Nikolaos is a small medieval Orthodox church situated in the southern part of occupied Famagusta within the Venetian walls. It stands very close to the Byzantine-tradition Church of Agia Zoni and is one of the surviving monuments associated with the Orthodox quarter of the medieval city.

It should not be confused with the great Cathedral of St Nicholas, the monumental Gothic building in the central square which was converted into a mosque following the Ottoman conquest and is today known as the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque.

The Orthodox quarter of Famagusta

Medieval Famagusta was a multicultural and multi-confessional city, containing churches serving several different Christian communities. Small churches belonging to the Byzantine architectural tradition survived in the southern part of the walled city, including Agios Nikolaos and the neighbouring Agia Zoni.

These two churches are particularly interesting because their architectural forms contrast strongly with the monumental Gothic Latin churches for which medieval Famagusta is famous. They provide evidence for the continuation of the Orthodox architectural tradition during the later Middle Ages.

Architecture

Agios Nikolaos is a small double-aisled church. The structure originally possessed two domes, traces of which can still be recognised in the surviving architectural remains.

An especially interesting construction feature is the presence of small openings associated with clay vessels incorporated into the masonry. Such ceramic elements could reduce the structural load and have also been associated with improving the acoustics within churches.

The architectural form of Agios Nikolaos, like that of nearby Agia Zoni, displays a distinctive geometric transition between square, polygonal and circular forms created by the supports and domes.

Dating

The church belongs to the late medieval period. Modern descriptions date it to the 15th century and place it among the churches of Famagusta's Orthodox quarter.

Its architecture reflects the continuation of the Byzantine ecclesiastical tradition while also belonging to the wider architectural environment that developed in Cyprus during Frankish rule. The neighbouring Agia Zoni similarly demonstrates the coexistence of Byzantine forms with Western architectural influences.

The church today

Agios Nikolaos does not survive intact. Centuries of abandonment and deterioration have substantially affected the building and parts of the church have collapsed. Nevertheless, sufficient architectural remains survive to reveal important aspects of its original arrangement.

The survival of both Agios Nikolaos and Agia Zoni within a short distance of each other is particularly significant. A historical depiction of Famagusta dating from 1967 records the domes of these two Byzantine chapels as distinctive features of the old city.

Although the small Church of Agios Nikolaos lacks the monumental scale of Famagusta's great Gothic churches, it remains important evidence of the Greek Orthodox presence and Byzantine architectural tradition within the medieval city.

Coordinates

I have not included coordinates without reliable confirmation of the precise position of this small Church of Agios Nikolaos. Online mapping records can easily confuse it with the former Cathedral of St Nicholas or with other churches of the same dedication.

Its documented location is in the southern part of the walled city of Famagusta, very close to Agia Zoni.
