Η σημερινά αποδεκτή ονομασία στο World Register of Marine Species είναι Calyx nicaeensis (Risso, 1827).

Calyx nicaeensis is a distinctive marine sponge of the family Phloeodictyidae, characterised by its large cup- or funnel-shaped body. It is a Mediterranean endemic species and is of particular interest in Cyprus, where its presence has been scientifically confirmed. Its occurrence on the island is noteworthy because the species has declined or disappeared from parts of the western Mediterranean.

The currently accepted name in the World Register of Marine Species is Calyx nicaeensis (Risso, 1827). It was originally described as Spongia nicaeensis, and several other combinations have been used historically.

Description

Calyx nicaeensis typically develops a conspicuous cup-, goblet- or vase-shaped body, with thick walls and a relatively short stalk attaching it to the substrate. The large central opening faces upwards.

Its colour generally ranges from brown to olive-brown. The sponge is firm, rough and fibrous in texture, and a dense network of strong fibres is visible over its surface. It may reach approximately 30 cm in height, while the opening of the cup can attain about 20 cm in diameter.

Numerous microscopic inhalant pores allow seawater to enter the body, while small exhalant openings, or oscula, occur mainly within the inner cavity. Water passing through the sponge's canal system supplies food and oxygen and carries away metabolic waste.

An animal, not a plant

Although its permanently attached form may resemble a plant, Calyx nicaeensis belongs to the animal kingdom. Sponges represent one of the most ancient evolutionary lineages of multicellular animals and live permanently attached to the seabed.

They are filter feeders, extracting microorganisms and suspended organic particles from the seawater pumped through their bodies. The same flow of water also enables gas exchange and waste removal.

Habitat and depth

Calyx nicaeensis is a benthic species occurring in several Mediterranean coastal habitats. It is known from rocky bottoms, coralligenous formations and Posidonia oceanica meadows, as well as some sandy substrates.

Most observations are from approximately 5–55 m depth, although records extend to about 400 m. In shallow waters it is often associated with shaded environments and areas close to caves or rocky overhangs.

Sediment accumulation

The sponge's characteristic cup shape creates a deep cavity in which sand, shell fragments and other coarse sediments may accumulate.

This accumulation does not necessarily harm the sponge and has been documented as an interesting aspect of the natural history of C. nicaeensis.

Reproduction

Sponges can reproduce both sexually and asexually. In Calyx nicaeensis, asexual reproduction through basal budding has been documented, with new growths developing near the base of the parent sponge.

This mechanism may help maintain local aggregations in suitable and relatively stable benthic habitats.

Distribution

Calyx nicaeensis is considered endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. Records are known from various parts of the basin, including the Aegean and Adriatic seas and the coasts of Italy, Greece, Tunisia, Corsica and Mediterranean France.

Recent research continues to regard it as a Mediterranean endemic with a fragmented distribution. Although rare or declining in parts of the western Mediterranean, substantial populations can still occur in some areas of the eastern Mediterranean.

Calyx nicaeensis in Cyprus

The occurrence of Calyx nicaeensis in Cyprus is scientifically documented. A review of Cyprus marine and coastal biodiversity, drawing on research into the island's shallow-water sponge fauna, includes the species in the Cyprus sponge checklist and identifies it as a Mediterranean endemic.

The same source considers its occurrence at at least one sampling locality in Cyprus noteworthy because the species, formerly more widespread across the Mediterranean, is disappearing from extensive areas of the western basin.

The photographs accompanying this post were taken underwater by Kostas Aristeidou at Akrotiri on 19 November 2016.

Threats and pressures

The distribution of Calyx nicaeensis has been described as fragmented. Individual sponges have been observed damaged by lost fishing lines and other discarded fishing gear, which can become entangled around their upright cup-shaped bodies.

Scientific literature also discusses Mediterranean warming and mass-mortality events affecting benthic communities more generally. These broader pressures, however, should not automatically be attributed specifically to the Cyprus population of C. nicaeensis without dedicated local evidence.

Common name

Goblet sponge is a documented English common name for Calyx nicaeensis.

No reliably documented established Greek or Cyprus vernacular name was located, so an artificial Greek translation is not introduced.
