The fossil presented here was found by George Konstantinou and Fani Konstantinou in the area of Agios Ioannis Malountas, Nicosia District, Cyprus. It is a fossil marine gastropod attributed to the genus Colubraria.
The genus Colubraria
Colubraria Schumacher, 1817 is a genus of marine gastropods belonging to the family Colubrariidae within the Neogastropoda. Colubrariidae is recognised in the modern classification of gastropods, with Colubraria as its type genus.
Shells of the genus are generally elongated, with a relatively high spire and prominent sculpture. They may display axial folds or varices together with spiral elements, producing a characteristically sculptured surface. The morphology of the aperture and external shell sculpture provides important characters for distinguishing species.
Fossil Colubraria
The genus has a long fossil history and representatives are known from various Cenozoic marine deposits. A recent revision of the Pliocene gastropods of southern Spain records several Colubraria species from the Mediterranean Pliocene and illustrates the importance of detailed morphological examination for species-level identification.
The specimen from Agios Ioannis Malountas is not assigned to species level without detailed comparative examination. It is therefore conservatively recorded as Colubraria sp.
The fossil from Agios Ioannis Malountas
The wider Nicosia region is particularly rich in marine fossils. The Geological Survey Department records abundant macrofossils in the Pliocene sediments of the Nicosia Formation, including numerous bivalves and gastropods, together with scaphopods, barnacles, echinoids and corals.
However, the occurrence of this particular fossil at Agios Ioannis Malountas is not by itself sufficient to assign it with certainty to a specific stratigraphic horizon or geological age. The specimen is therefore retained as Colubraria sp., without an unsupported species identification or precise geological age.
