Η καταγραφή του Biodiversity of Cyprus by George Konstantinou τεκμηριώνει ζωντανό άτομο στη Ξυλοφάγου, σε βάθος 2 μέτρων, στις 30/1/2017, με υποβρύχια φωτογραφία του Costas Constantinou.

Luria lurida (Linnaeus, 1758) is a marine gastropod mollusc belonging to the family Cypraeidae, the distinctive family of cowries. The scientific name remains accepted, and the species is native to the Mediterranean, with a distribution extending into the eastern Atlantic.
The photographic record presented here was made at Xylofagou on 30 January 2017, at a depth of 2 metres, by Costas Constantinou.
Description
The shell of Luria lurida is glossy, solid and elongated-oval, with the characteristic form of the Cypraeidae. Adult shells commonly measure about 40–48 mm, with recorded sizes ranging from approximately 14 to 66 mm.
The dorsal surface varies from pale brown and reddish-brown to greyish brown, with transverse bands of contrasting shades. Particularly characteristic are the dark brown to almost black markings at both extremities of the shell. The base is paler and often light orange. The elongated aperture bears numerous teeth along both sides.
In living animals, the shell may be largely hidden because the two lobes of the mantle extend over its outer surface and can cover it almost completely. The mantle is generally dark brown.
Continuous contact between the living mantle and shell helps maintain the exceptionally smooth and polished surface characteristic of cowries.
Habitat and behaviour
Luria lurida is primarily a benthic species of rocky substrates. It occurs in shaded rocky habitats, crevices, small cavities and marine caves and may be encountered from only a few metres depth in the Mediterranean.
The Xylofagou observation at only 2 metres depth provides a good example of its occurrence in the very shallow coastal waters of Cyprus.
During daylight it usually remains concealed in dark locations, beneath rocks or inside crevices. Activity increases at night, when the animal leaves its shelter to feed.
Diet
Luria lurida feeds principally on marine sponges. This feeding ecology explains its frequent association with rocky substrates and shaded cavities where sponges develop.
Recorded prey includes Aplysina aerophoba, while Chondrilla nucula and Tethya aurantium have also been reported.
Feeding activity takes place mainly at night, when the animal moves over the rocky substrate in search of food.
The living animal and its shell
Cowries show a particularly striking relationship between the living mollusc and its shell. When Luria lurida is active, the mantle can extend over much of the shell's surface.
When disturbed, the soft tissues and mantle are rapidly withdrawn, revealing the smooth, highly polished shell. The narrow aperture and strongly toothed margins provide protection for the soft body after it has withdrawn inside.
Reproduction
Like other Cypraeidae, Luria lurida has separate sexes. Following fertilisation, eggs are deposited in groups of capsules attached to the substrate.
The female remains over the egg mass for a period, a behaviour characteristic of many cowries. Following embryonic development, planktonic larvae are released, providing a mechanism for dispersal through marine currents.
Distribution
Luria lurida has a broad warm-temperate and subtropical distribution. It occurs in both the western and eastern Mediterranean and in the eastern Atlantic. Atlantic records extend to the Azores, Canary Islands and Cape Verde and along the western coast of Africa.
Its presence in the eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus therefore forms part of the species' natural geographical range.
Presence in Cyprus
Luria lurida is a recorded member of the marine fauna of Cyprus. Biodiversity of Cyprus by George Konstantinou documents a living individual at Xylofagou, at a depth of 2 metres, on 30 January 2017, photographed underwater by Costas Constantinou.
The species is also included in an official Republic of Cyprus biodiversity report among marine molluscs covered by international conservation conventions.
Conservation and protection
Luria lurida is among the Mediterranean marine gastropods listed in Appendix II of the Bern Convention, covering strictly protected fauna. The official Cyprus biodiversity report specifically records Luria lurida under Appendix II.
Collection of living animals and shells of protected marine species can place additional pressure on local populations, particularly because the large and attractive shells of cowries have traditionally been sought by collectors.
