Η A. prasina, όπως και η Actinia fragacea, θεωρούνταν παλαιότερα χρωματικές μορφές της A. equina, αλλά αναγνωρίστηκαν αργότερα ως διαφορετικά είδη.

Actinia prasina Gosse, 1860 is a sea anemone belonging to the family Actiniidae. The name is currently recognised as an accepted species, while the former combination Actinia equina prasina is treated as a synonym of Actinia prasina.
The individual shown in the photographs was recorded inside a dark sea cave at Akrotiri, Cyprus, on 12 February 2017 by Kostas Aristeidou.
Description
Actinia prasina is characterised by its green coloration. It has a soft cylindrical body, a broad adhesive base and an oral disc surrounded by numerous short tentacles.
Detailed descriptions report approximately 190–200 tentacles, arranged in six cycles. The body may reach approximately 4 cm in diameter and 6 cm in height.
Like other sea anemones, it possesses cnidocytes containing nematocysts, specialised structures used in capturing prey and defence.
Taxonomy
The taxonomic history of Actinia prasina is particularly interesting. Gosse originally described the green form in 1860 as a variety of Actinia equina. Later research demonstrated sufficient differentiation among green populations for them to be regarded as a separate species.
This distinction was subsequently supported by studies of genetic differentiation. A. prasina, together with Actinia fragacea, had formerly been regarded as colour forms of A. equina before being recognised as separate species.
Today Actinia prasina Gosse, 1860 is listed as an accepted species in international taxonomic databases.
Habitat and biology
The species is associated with rocky coastal habitats, attaching itself to rocks, walls and crevices. It has been reported from the surface to depths of approximately 10 metres and may occur in areas exposed to substantial wave action.
When exposed to air in the intertidal zone, the animal can contract its body and withdraw its tentacles, reducing the surface area exposed to the surrounding environment.
The occurrence of the photographed individual inside a dark marine cave at Akrotiri is the specific feature of the Cyprus observation presented here.
The Akrotiri record
Identification of green Actinia based solely on coloration requires caution because the group displays considerable morphological and colour variation and has a complex taxonomic history. Scientific studies have used cnidom morphometrics and genetic evidence to distinguish A. prasina from closely related forms.
The Akrotiri record is therefore retained as Actinia prasina Gosse, 1860, following the existing identification, without attempting a more definitive conclusion based solely on the photographs.
