Bar-tailed Lark – Ammomanes cinctura (Gould, 1839) – A very rare visitor to Cyprus

Text, photographs and videos by George Konstantinou.

The photographs and videos were taken at Cape Greco on 14 April 2017 and 11 April 2023.

A very rare bird in Cyprus

The Bar-tailed Lark, scientifically known as Ammomanes cinctura, is a small bird of the deserts and arid regions of Africa and Asia. It is neither a resident nor a regular migrant in Cyprus, where it is recorded as an extremely rare vagrant.

Its occurrence in Cyprus is of considerable ornithological interest because the island lies outside the species’ normal range. Every sighting attracts the attention of birdwatchers and requires detailed photographic documentation to confirm the bird’s identity.

The Cape Greco records

The individual observed at Cape Greco in April 2017 represented one of the very few records of the species in Cyprus at that time. The Cape Greco occurrence of 13–14 April 2017 was reported as the sixth accepted record of the Bar-tailed Lark on the island. George Konstantinou photographed and filmed the bird on 14 April 2017.

Another individual was photographed and filmed by George Konstantinou in the same general area at Cape Greco on 11 April 2023. This observation was reported as the tenth record of the species in Cyprus, demonstrating just how rarely it reaches the island.

The two observations, six years apart and during approximately the same period in spring, show that occasional individuals may reach Cyprus while dispersing or wandering from neighbouring arid regions.

Description

The Bar-tailed Lark is approximately 14–15 centimetres long. It is a small and relatively compact bird with a rounded head, short tail, slender legs and a small conical bill.

Its plumage consists mainly of sandy, grey-brown and buff tones, providing excellent camouflage in its natural environment. The underparts are pale and usually show little or no prominent streaking.

In flight, rufous or reddish-brown tones become visible on the wings and tail. Its most important identification feature is the broad black terminal band across the tail, from which the English name Bar-tailed Lark is derived.

Field identification

When it is on the ground, its sandy plumage makes the bird extremely difficult to detect. It usually walks or runs quickly between stones and sparse vegetation and may remain motionless when it senses danger.

It can be confused with other small larks. It differs from the Desert Lark, Ammomanes deserti, mainly through its smaller size, finer bill, shorter tail and the characteristic black terminal band across its tail.

It can be distinguished from the Greater Short-toed Lark, Calandrella brachydactyla, and other larks occurring in Cyprus by its compact form, relatively uniform sandy plumage, pale underparts and distinctive tail pattern.

Voice and behaviour

Its contact calls are generally short, thin and dry. The male’s song may be delivered from the ground, from a slightly elevated position or during a short display flight.

The species spends much of the day searching for food on the ground. It may occur alone, in pairs or in small groups. Its coloration blends so effectively with sand and stones that the bird can remain unnoticed even at close range.

Habitat

The Bar-tailed Lark favours flat, open desert and semi-desert landscapes with sandy or stony ground and very sparse low vegetation. It also occurs on dry plateaux, arid plains and land with scattered small shrubs.

Compared with the Desert Lark, the Bar-tailed Lark is more closely associated with flat, sandy and open terrain and less frequently with steep rocky slopes.

The dry and open landscape of Cape Greco may temporarily provide suitable conditions for wandering individuals reaching Cyprus.

Diet

Its diet consists of small seeds, plant material, insects and other small invertebrates. The relative importance of these food types changes according to the season and their availability.

Insects become more important during the breeding period because they provide the protein required by rapidly growing chicks.

Breeding

The nest is constructed on the ground inside a shallow depression, usually beside a stone, small shrub or another form of natural shelter. It is made from dry grasses and fine plant material.

A clutch normally contains a small number of eggs, often between two and four. The coloration of the eggs and nest helps conceal them within the surrounding sandy environment.

There is no evidence that the species breeds in Cyprus. The Cypriot observations concern rare wandering individuals.

Global distribution

The Bar-tailed Lark occurs across the arid Saharo-Sindian region. Its range includes desert areas of north-western and northern Africa, the Middle East and the Arabian Peninsula, extending eastwards into Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. An isolated population is also found in Cape Verde.

The species is mainly resident or locally dispersive, moving in response to rainfall, drought and food availability. Some individuals may wander far beyond the normal range and occasionally reach the eastern Mediterranean.

Subspecies

Three subspecies are generally recognized:

  • Ammomanes cinctura cinctura, found in Cape Verde.
  • Ammomanes cinctura arenicolor, distributed across the deserts of northern Africa, Sinai and western Arabia.
  • Ammomanes cinctura zarudnyi, found in the eastern part of the range, from Iran to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Geographically, the rare individuals reaching Cyprus might be expected to originate from nearby populations usually assigned to A. c. arenicolor. However, their subspecific identity should not be regarded as confirmed without adequate morphological evidence or the examination of a specimen.

Conservation status

The Bar-tailed Lark is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as Least Concern (LC). It has an extensive geographical range and is not currently regarded as being at immediate risk of global extinction.

Degradation of desert habitats, overgrazing, prolonged drought and changes in land use may affect local populations. Its rarity in Cyprus is principally geographical and does not mean that the species is globally threatened.
