Το Pleurobranchus forskahli Delle Chiaje, 1822 αναφέρεται από το World Register of Marine Species ως συνώνυμο του Pleurobranchus testudinarius.

An impressive sea slug of Cyprus
Pleurobranchus testudinarius is a large marine gastropod mollusc belonging to the family Pleurobranchidae. It is a side-gilled sea slug, a group characterised by a large, feather-like gill positioned on the right side of the body beneath the margin of the mantle.
The English names “Turtle side-gill sea slug” and “Turtle sea slug” refer to the characteristic appearance of its dorsal surface. The polygonal areas and raised tubercles of the mantle bear some resemblance to the sections of a turtle’s shell.
Although it is sometimes described generally as a nudibranch, it does not belong taxonomically to the order Nudibranchia. It belongs to the separate order Pleurobranchida, which is grouped together with the nudibranchs within the broader evolutionary lineage Nudipleura.
Scientific name
The accepted scientific name is Pleurobranchus testudinarius Cantraine, 1835. The species was described by the Belgian zoologist François-Joseph Cantraine in 1835.
The generic name Pleurobranchus is derived from Greek words meaning “side” and “gill”, referring to the respiratory structure located on the animal’s right side. The specific epithet testudinarius is associated with the Latin word testudo, meaning a tortoise, turtle or tortoise-like protective shield.
The World Register of Marine Species lists Pleurobranchus forskahli Delle Chiaje, 1822 as a synonym of Pleurobranchus testudinarius. It should not be confused with the separate accepted species Pleurobranchus forskalii Rüppell & Leuckart, 1828.
Description
This is one of the largest and most conspicuous side-gilled slugs occurring in the Mediterranean. Large individuals can reach or exceed 20 centimetres in length, although there is considerable variation among specimens.
The body is broad, oval and flattened. It is covered by a large mantle bearing a characteristic reticulated pattern composed of polygonal areas. Each polygonal section normally contains a single large, rounded tubercle.
Colouration is extremely variable. Individuals may be yellowish, brown, reddish, orange, greenish or dark purple, frequently with pale lines surrounding the polygonal sections of the mantle. Colour differences alone do not always provide a reliable means of identification.
Two rolled rhinophores occur at the front of the body. These sensory structures detect chemical signals in the water and assist the animal in locating food, potential mates and suitable habitat.
The lateral gill
The defining anatomical feature of the group is the large, feather-like gill situated on the right side of the body between the mantle and the foot. In a living animal, the gill may remain partly concealed beneath the mantle.
This lateral respiratory organ clearly distinguishes side-gilled slugs from most nudibranchs, whose branchial structures are normally exposed on the upper surface of the body.
As in other sea slugs, the external shell was lost during the group’s evolutionary history. A reduced internal shell is nevertheless present, completely enclosed by the mantle and invisible in the living animal.
Distribution
Pleurobranchus testudinarius is regarded principally as a Mediterranean species. It has been recorded in the western, central and eastern parts of the basin, including waters surrounding Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus, as well as the eastern Mediterranean coastline.
Records also exist from the Canary Islands and the Azores in the eastern Atlantic. Knowledge of its precise geographical distribution continues to develop because the species spends much of its life at depth or inside concealed habitats where it is not easily observed.
Its occurrence in Cyprus forms part of its natural Mediterranean distribution. It is not considered an alien or Lessepsian species.
Habitat and activity
The species inhabits the seabed in rocky areas, cavities, crevices, shaded surfaces and mixed bottoms composed of rocks, sand or mud. It has also been observed close to seagrass meadows and in habitats supporting rich growths of sponges and colonial ascidians.
It occurs from relatively shallow water to depths of several tens of metres. The Protaras observation was made at 19 metres, well within the known depth range of the species.
During daylight, individuals frequently remain concealed beneath rocks or inside cavities. The species is mainly nocturnal, emerging from its shelter after dark to travel over the seabed in search of food.
Movement
The animal moves slowly over the substrate using a broad, muscular foot. Mucus reduces friction and allows it to travel across rocks, sand and other irregular underwater surfaces.
Despite its broad and heavy appearance, it can move steadily among stones and through cavities. The mantle covers much of the foot, creating the impression that the animal is gliding over the seabed.
Diet
Pleurobranchus testudinarius is carnivorous. Available observations indicate that it feeds upon colonial ascidians, commonly known as sea squirts, which grow over rocks and other hard substrates.
Its diet has not, however, been studied comprehensively, and detailed information remains limited. The presence of an individual on algae or seagrass should not automatically be interpreted as herbivory, since it may simply be crossing the surface or searching for animals growing upon it.
Food is collected and processed with the radula, a ribbon-like feeding organ bearing numerous microscopic teeth.
Reproduction and eggs
Like most sea slugs, Pleurobranchus testudinarius is a simultaneous hermaphrodite. Each individual possesses both male and female reproductive organs, although mating between two animals is normally required for the exchange of sperm.
The eggs are deposited inside a long gelatinous ribbon attached to the seabed. The ribbon is often coiled into a circular or rosette-shaped mass and contains numerous minute eggs embedded within its translucent or whitish material.
The photographs from Protaras show an individual together with its egg mass. This observation provides evidence of reproductive activity by the species in Cypriot waters.
Following embryonic development, microscopic veliger larvae hatch from the eggs. These larvae are transported through the water column before settling on the seabed and undergoing metamorphosis into the juvenile benthic form.
Chemical defence
The evolutionary loss of an external shell left side-gilled slugs without the mechanical protection available to many other gastropods. They have compensated through the development of chemical defensive mechanisms.
Distinctive chemical compounds, including the triterpenoids testudinariol A and testudinariol B, have been isolated from the skin and mucus of Pleurobranchus testudinarius. These secretions are believed to discourage potential predators and reduce the likelihood of the animal being consumed.
Ecological importance and observation
The species forms part of the Mediterranean’s rich benthic fauna. Through its predation on colonial ascidians, it participates in shaping communities growing on rocks and other hard underwater surfaces.
Records made by scuba divers are especially valuable for studying this animal. Photographs can document its distribution, depth, habitat, season of occurrence and reproductive activity without requiring specimens to be collected.
Individuals should not be touched, repositioned or removed from the seabed for photography. Special care should be taken around egg masses, which are vulnerable to physical damage.
Conservation status
No global assessment of Pleurobranchus testudinarius is currently available on the IUCN Red List. A threat category should therefore not be assigned to the species without an appropriate formal assessment.
Like other benthic marine organisms, it may be affected by pollution, degradation of seabed habitats, coastal development, marine litter and changes affecting the communities of organisms upon which it feeds.
