A colourful nudibranch of Cyprus
Cratena peregrina is a small but remarkably colourful marine gastropod mollusc belonging to the family Facelinidae. It is an aeolid nudibranch and is widely known by the English common name “Pilgrim hervia”.
No established Greek common name has been confirmed for this particular species. Its scientific name therefore provides the safest means of reference and identification.
Despite its small size, it is easily distinguished by its milky-white body, bright orange rhinophores and numerous vividly coloured cerata covering its dorsal surface.
Scientific name
The accepted scientific name is Cratena peregrina (Gmelin, 1791). Johann Friedrich Gmelin originally described the species as Doris peregrina in 1791. Its later transfer to the genus Cratena explains why the author’s name and date are enclosed in parentheses.
Older scientific literature also contains the names Cuthona peregrina, Rizzolia peregrina and Hervia costai. These names are now treated as synonyms and do not represent separate species.
The epithet peregrina is derived from the Latin peregrinus, meaning foreign, wandering or travelling. The English common name “Pilgrim hervia” reflects the same meaning.
Description
Cratena peregrina possesses a slender, elongated body that normally reaches approximately 3–5 centimetres in length. Its basic body colour is translucent or milky white, and the tail is long and sharply pointed.
The dorsal surface normally carries eight to ten groups of elongated cerata. These may be red, brown, purple or blue and frequently terminate in vivid light-blue or cyan tips.
A branch of the digestive gland extends inside each ceras. Its contents can contribute to the colour of the cerata and may vary according to the animal’s diet and physiological condition.
Two long oral tentacles project from the head and are white or translucent. Behind them is a pair of bright orange or reddish-orange rhinophores, one of the species’ most characteristic identification features.
Rhinophores and senses
The rhinophores are specialised sensory organs. They detect chemical substances dissolved in seawater and help the animal locate its hydroid prey, potential mates and suitable sites for depositing eggs.
The elongated oral tentacles assist in exploring the surface immediately in front of the animal. Because vision in nudibranchs is limited, chemical detection, touch and the perception of waterborne signals are particularly important in their daily activity.
The eyes are extremely small and are positioned near the bases of the rhinophores. They primarily detect changes in light intensity rather than forming detailed images.
Cerata and respiration
The cerata are the numerous elongated projections covering the animal’s back. They greatly increase the body’s surface area and participate in gaseous exchange with the surrounding water, functioning as respiratory surfaces.
They are also extensions of the digestive system, as branches of the digestive gland enter each one. Nutrients obtained from food are consequently distributed throughout the cerata.
At the tip of each ceras is a specialised structure known as a cnidosac. Functional nematocysts—the stinging cells acquired from the cnidarian prey—can be stored inside these sacs.
Distribution
Cratena peregrina occurs throughout the Mediterranean Sea, including the waters of Cyprus. It has also been recorded in the eastern Atlantic, extending from European waters southwards along the coast of western Africa.
Older reports from distant geographical areas require careful reassessment because externally similar animals may belong to different species. Modern morphological and molecular studies have demonstrated that some Indian Ocean populations previously identified as Cratena peregrina represent other species.
Its occurrence in Cyprus forms part of its natural Mediterranean distribution. It is neither an alien nor a Lessepsian species.
Habitat
The species principally inhabits rocky seabeds, from relatively shallow water to depths of several tens of metres. It favours clear, well-oxygenated water, rocky slopes, walls and surfaces supporting colonies of hydroids.
Its presence is closely associated with the distribution of its prey. It is consequently encountered most frequently on or near colonies of hydroids belonging to the genus Eudendrium and related organisms.
The individual in the original record was photographed at Protaras at a depth of 20 metres. Its characteristic egg mass was observed at the same location.
Diet
Cratena peregrina is a specialised predator of hydroids. It feeds mainly upon the polyps of colonies belonging to the genus Eudendrium, including Eudendrium racemosum. It has also been reported feeding on other hydroids, such as Pennaria disticha.
Hydroids are cnidarians composed of numerous small polyps. The polyps capture zooplankton and tiny crustaceans using specialised stinging cells known as nematocysts.
The nudibranch removes and consumes the polyps with its radula, a ribbon-like feeding structure carrying rows of microscopic teeth.
Kleptopredation
Cratena peregrina became especially well known within the scientific community because of an unusual feeding strategy termed “kleptopredation”.
Researchers discovered that the animal preferentially consumes hydroid polyps that have recently captured and swallowed zooplankton. The nudibranch therefore eats both the polyp and the prey contained inside its digestive system.
This behaviour differs from ordinary kleptoparasitism, in which an animal merely steals food captured by another organism. In kleptopredation, the predator consumes the prey-bearing organism together with the food it has captured, thereby feeding across two trophic levels simultaneously.
A study combining behavioural experiments with stable-isotope analysis indicated that more than half of the dietary intake of Cratena peregrina could be derived from zooplankton previously consumed by the hydroid polyps.
Using nematocysts for defence
Hydroids possess nematocysts, microscopic capsules capable of discharging a stinging thread. They use these structures for capturing prey and defending themselves. Cratena peregrina can consume the polyps without digesting all their nematocysts.
Some undischarged nematocysts are transported through branches of the digestive system towards the tips of the cerata and stored inside the cnidosacs. They remain functional and can subsequently be employed in the nudibranch’s own defence.
The animal therefore converts the defensive weapons of its prey into a protective mechanism of its own. Its strongly contrasting colours may also serve as a visual warning to potential predators.
Reproduction
Cratena peregrina is a simultaneous hermaphrodite. Every individual possesses both male and female reproductive organs, although it normally mates with another individual and exchanges sperm reciprocally.
The reproductive openings are situated on the right side of the body. During mating, the two animals position themselves with their right sides together.
After mating, the eggs are deposited inside a delicate gelatinous ribbon, usually attached to or near a hydroid colony. The ribbon is coiled into a small spiral or circular mass and contains numerous microscopic eggs.
Placing the eggs close to hydroids is advantageous because the juveniles settle near the specialised food they will require after metamorphosis.
Eggs and larval development
The embryos develop within the protective gelatinous ribbon. When embryonic development is complete, microscopic veliger larvae emerge from the eggs.
These larvae possess a temporary shell and travel within the water column. They later settle upon suitable substrate, lose the larval shell and undergo metamorphosis into the juvenile benthic form.
The observation of an adult individual together with eggs at Protaras provides evidence of reproductive activity in Cypriot waters.
Ecological role
Cratena peregrina forms part of the complex benthic food webs of the Mediterranean. By consuming hydroid polyps, it influences the development and structure of hydroid colonies.
Through kleptopredation, it also links different trophic levels: the zooplankton, the polyps that capture it and the nudibranch that consumes both organisms.
Its presence indicates the availability of suitable hard substrate and established hydroid colonies. Because it depends upon particular prey, changes in hydroid abundance can directly affect its local population.
Observation and photography
Its small size and slender body make the species difficult to locate. The most effective way to find it is to examine colonies of Eudendrium and other hydroids carefully on rocks and shaded walls.
Divers and underwater photographers should avoid touching or repositioning the animal. Its cerata are delicate and can easily be damaged.
Special care is also required around hydroid colonies and egg ribbons. Contact from diving equipment, fins or hands may damage the nudibranch, its eggs and the specialised microhabitat upon which it depends.
Conservation status
No global assessment of Cratena peregrina is currently available on the IUCN Red List. It should therefore not be assigned a threat category in the absence of a formal assessment.
Possible local pressures include marine pollution, damage to rocky seabeds, degradation of coastal ecosystems, excessive sedimentation and declines in the hydroid colonies upon which it depends.
