A native species of the Cyprus flora

Silene behen is a small annual flowering plant belonging to the family Caryophyllaceae. In Cyprus, it is known by the local names Skostroui and Tsakroui. It is a native but non-endemic component of the island’s flora, as it also occurs in other parts of the Mediterranean and Macaronesia.

It occurs in many parts of Cyprus, from low coastal areas to inland and lower mountainous regions. Despite its small size and relatively inconspicuous flowers, it can be identified by the combination of its ten-nerved calyx, pink petals and the form of its fruiting capsule.

Description

It is an annual herb that normally grows to approximately 40 centimetres in height. Its stems are erect or ascending and may be simple or branched, particularly in the upper part of the plant.

The leaves are simple, opposite and entire. The lower leaves are generally broader and may be obovate or spoon-shaped, whereas the upper leaves are narrower, oblong to lanceolate. The green foliage may acquire a slightly glaucous appearance depending on environmental conditions.

The plant completes its life cycle within a single growing season. It germinates following favourable rainfall, develops during the wetter months, flowers in spring and dries after its seeds have matured.

Flowers

The flowers are borne individually or in loose inflorescences at the ends of the stems. They have five petals, usually pale pink or rose-coloured, which are shallowly divided or shortly lobed at the tip.

The tubular calyx has ten clearly visible veins, an important feature for identifying the species. As the fruit develops, the persistent calyx surrounds and protects the growing capsule.

The flowers possess the reproductive structures characteristic of the genus Silene. Pollination is carried out mainly by small insects visiting the flowers in search of pollen or nectar.

Fruit and seeds

The fruit is a capsule that develops inside the persistent calyx. When mature and dry, it opens at the top and releases numerous small seeds.

The forms of the capsule, calyx and seeds provide important taxonomic characters for distinguishing Silene behen from related species growing in Cyprus.

The seeds remain in the soil during the dry season and germinate when rainfall and temperature create favourable conditions.

Flowering period

In Cyprus, it flowers principally from February until May. The precise flowering period varies according to altitude, local temperature and the amount of winter rainfall.

It may flower earlier in the warmer coastal regions, whereas flowering at higher elevations can continue until the end of spring.

Habitat

Silene behen grows along the margins of cultivated fields, on waste ground, dry hills, roadsides, stony places and other open habitats with low vegetation.

It may also occur on disturbed ground, although this does not mean that it is an alien or invasive species. It is adapted to the Mediterranean cycle of wet winters and hot, dry summers.

In Cyprus, it has been recorded from sea level to approximately 1,150 metres above sea level. Its presence on different soil types and across a broad altitudinal range helps explain its wide distribution on the island.

Distribution in Cyprus

The species occurs in many parts of Cyprus and is not restricted to a single district or geological zone. Records are known from coastal areas, plains, hills and lower mountain localities.

The photographs accompanying this article were taken at Lapithos in 2017. Lapithos, situated on the northern foothills of the Pentadaktylos mountain range, supports a variety of open, rocky and partly cultivated habitats suitable for numerous annual plants of the Mediterranean flora.

Global distribution

The natural range of Silene behen includes the Mediterranean region and parts of Macaronesia. It occurs in areas of southern Europe, North Africa, the eastern Mediterranean and western Asia.

Its distribution is broader in the eastern Mediterranean, whereas it is more fragmented in some parts of the western Mediterranean. Cyprus lies within the species’ natural geographical range.

Ecological role

As an annual plant, Silene behen rapidly uses the moisture and nutrients available following the winter rains. It forms part of the seasonal herbaceous vegetation and contributes to the botanical diversity of open Mediterranean habitats.

Its flowers provide food for small insects, while its seeds form part of the available food resources for various invertebrates and small seed-eating animals.

After the plant completes its life cycle, its dry remains decompose and return organic matter and nutrients to the soil.

The genus Silene

Silene is one of the largest genera in the family Caryophyllaceae and contains hundreds of species. Its greatest diversity occurs in the Northern Hemisphere, particularly in the Mediterranean region and western Asia.

The scientific name Silene is traditionally associated with Silenus of Greek mythology. The exact origin of the name is not certain, and several different interpretations have been proposed.

Many species in the genus share similar morphological characteristics. Accurate identification may require examination of the stem indumentum, leaf shape, calyx shape and venation, petals, capsule and seeds.

Conservation status

Silene behen is not endemic to Cyprus and has not been assessed separately for the IUCN Red List. It is not generally considered threatened across its entire natural range.

It is widely distributed in Cyprus and occurs in several different habitats. Local populations may nevertheless be affected by agricultural intensification, herbicide use, development and the destruction of field margins and other open natural sites.
